Can Josh Boone Save Yi?

I know I've been here for a long time, but some of the cap stuff is jibberish to me.
Question: Josh Boone has a qualifying offer for next season.
If we decline that, does he come off the books and become a free agent? Or would he still be on the books for next season, but would be an expiring?
Don't get me wrong, I actually like Josh. I'm just curious because if we can write him off, I'd kick him to the curb immediately. If my terrible math is right, I think if we were able to move Hump and buy out Dooling, we'd get the room for 2 max guys.
Of course I could be way off. I know I should know this. I know in college when I have millions of hours of free time on my hands I used to know this. The real world pushes this info out of my brain though lol.
The only reason I'm asking is a) I actually think Yi would do well for us off the bench to stretch the D b) playing him in smaller spurts may help his defense since we wouldn't have to rely on him for longer amounts of time and he'd be fresher and more inclined to play with more energy c) I'm not gonna lie, when thinking about Yi, you have to think about the off the court money he brings to the table. Research what Yormak has done. Even if he doesn't become a star, having him on the bench when we get good will pay dividends on TV deals and merchandizing in China
