http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/67620/20100630/nets_confident_in_amare_rudy_gay_backup_plan/Honestly yeah I really want Lebron but I wouldn't be all that depressed if we went into next year like this.
Harris/T-Will
C.Lee/T-WIll
Gay/DJ
Amare/Favors
Lopez/Favors
We need to add another PG, backup bigman, and another shooter but all in all that is a really solid team.
How far do you think that team would go. I say depending on where other players go they are at least in the playoff as anywhere from a 2 to a 5 seed.

Second round of the playoffs, a fifth seed. Depending on how the Eastern Conference shapes up after Free Agency, that team is not a contended, more like a faux-contender.

I was going to post this, but it's speculative BS.
I'm not going to say it won't happen but this isn't an official backup plan that has been released, it's excerpts of quotes by Nets FO personell that Fred Kerber has turned into his opinion of what the Nets will ultimately do and then spun with a hyperbolic title by RealGM Admins..

Unless Gay, Lee or Twill become studs (Twill has the chance), I think the ceiling for that team is losing the conference finals. That's the BEST that lineup would ever do in my opinion. I think a 2nd round out is more realistic.

Agreed.
For that team to become a legitimate contender, most of the young players on that roster including Gay are going to have to become very good, Harris is going to have to stay healthy, Amar'e can't decline and Lopez will have to become a true top 10 beast.
I'm saying, if the most likely outcome you're looking at is a second round exit each year, we're better off building through the draft and making that blockbuster trade when it presents itself.
Then again, you could look at it in the sense that we put that team together and then make the blockbuster when it presents itself anyway and then that team becomes a true contender.
I mean if we say signed Amar'e and Gay and Favors was looking very good and Chris Paul comes back successfully from injury, maybe we revisit talks and land Paul for Harris and Favors?
Then you could look at something like:
PG Chris Paul
SG Courtney Lee
SF Rudy Gay
PF Amar'e
C Lopez
Bench: T Will, D. James, etc.
Still don't know how that team gels, but if we don't land Lebron and chances are stacked against us, that wouldn't be a bad consolation prize, although truthfully I'm not a fan of Amar'e or Gay in general and Chris Paul is still a question mark coming back from injury, especially long term.
We'll see. It's going to be an interesting summer, that's for sure.

Not liking that line up at all. Good enough to make the playoffs but no real threat for a title. I could just see us doing it if Prok really just wants to start winning as quickly as possible. He did say he expects to make the playoffs next year and a title in the next 5 years. So yeah I don't think he wants this team in the lottery again next season.
To be honest, I'd rather rebuild slow than spend money just to spend it and hope to make the playoffs but whatever. Like Prelude said we'd just hope one of our guys turn into some type of franchise player...sigh

So who do you like then I mean it seems like if we don't get lebron you don't want anybody. I know you can't like Boozer or JJ. I said before that I wouldn't mind D. Lee which you shot down. Dirk is definately not going to happen. Not sure how you feel about Bosh. Pretty much it's LBJ or nothing for you.

I am totally against this.
I think it will be a mistake to sign and pay Gay.
I think it will be a mistake to sign Amare.
I would rather sign some cheap vets and let the young guys play. I would rather compete with what we have and have the guys have another year to grow. I would rather compete for the 8th seed in the East or get back into the lottery then pay those guys.

If we dont get Lebron...D.Lee is the one guy that yeah...fits in with a slow draft build. I would do that....and stop.
I happen to think that if its going to cost us assets for an S&T of Bosh..that we are better off signing Lee for less anyway. Keep the assets and look to make a blockbuster later to get another major piece by trade. My hope is...Lebron sees it too. That evey side kick has a price. Max 5 year is one thing . Forcing an S&T is only worth it if the other team is reasonable. Otherwise...those are assets spent that could be used later to make the team even better. Why waste that?
DUMP THE HUMP. Get him out of here....get the last of the space.

Well Gay is gone, but I'd rather miss out than give him that awful max contract.

Thank God!
Someone was going to overpay him. I was worried it was going to be the Nets.

I can't believe Rudy got a max deal. I heard of teams overpaying for their own talent but jesus. He's worth 12/13 mill max...not over 16 a year on average.

Hilarious that he just called everything off after receiving the contract. Even he thinks he's overpaid, ahha.

He's a restricted free agent. If Memphis is going to match any offer, there's no point in meeting anyone else.

well looks like Rudy isn't a backup plan anymore.

I'm not too concerned. I am confident we will make the right moves, even if the "right move" is no moves.
I'm not too concerned. I am happy though Lebron promised he'd make a decision by Monday. I was gonna be so pissed if this dragged out till mid-July.

Come on now...would I steer you wrong? I told you...this kid was going to get overpaid. Steeling someone's RFA is a pain in the ass. They either match or you have to give them a contract so ugly they dont want to match. And then? You OWN the ugly contract. So...in the end...
Best of luck Rudy.

Disappointed, but they can have him for that kind of money. Looks like a lot of people are gonna get paid this summer. D.Lee might go higher then everyone thinks. RJ might not be as dumb either.

Al these guys are going to get paid. But D.Lee maxed is actually a bargain since his max is lower than Amare, and Boozer...and honestly? Factoring in age, health and durability...getting Lee is BETTER than those guys as I see it.
Amare could return to greatness...but at the max rate he is entitled to (higher than Lebron) I dont want him. Lee and Boozer are weak defensively...neither can block shots....but at least Lee CAN slide to center.

Amare's knees really frighten me. I don't see him holding up for 5 years.
