OT: Shopping in New Jersey

Hey Nets' fans, sorry to bother you.
I will be flying over from Europe later this month and staying in Secaucus, NJ. I'm looking to shop a lot, do you guys have any tips for me? Is it better to shop in NJ, than NY because of the sales tax? Where are the best outlets, malls etc?
Also, are there any tips on what to see in NJ? I've heard it is a beautiful state. Are there any neighborhoods I should stay away from?
Thanks in advance, and yeah btw I hope your FA signings go well. I think you guys have one of the best young cores in the league (Favors could be a GREAT pickup) so the future is bright.
I've already seen the Nets play, saw them play the Bulls at home a couple of years back. It was a Mikki Moore fan night, lol. But like I said, I hope everything goes well for your team, I like the Nets and hope the can bounce back.

If you want to shop, do it in Jersey, not New York. If you want to shop alot, you can head over to Jersey Gardens in Elizabeth, its the closest outlet mall in the area. If you want a mall, New Jersey has them.
As for what to see...how long are you staying? I would take a ride down to the shore, walk the boardwalk. Depending on which boardwalk you go to, its the longest in the world (Atlantic City). I personally like seaside's the best, but they're all good.
As for staying out of neighborhoods...um, don't go to Camden? Kind of hard to answer without having an idea of where you want to go.

The Atlantic City outlets are really tight as well, but that's a trek from Secaucus, but it's worth it if you want to gamble as well.

All right guys, thanks a lot. I will be staying there for a week (going into NY city aswell).
I'm not sure what I will be seeing or where I'll be going. I'm just going on vacation, relaxing and shopping. I will be staying in Secaucus and I will have a rental car for most of the time.
Thanks for your quick answers!
Any more tips would be welcomed.

If you're staying for the week, then I would deff. head down to the shore. Sure, you'll see a lot of the stereo-typical Jersey guidos there and a lot of Bennies, but its still a pretty fun time.

Oh, you might want to head to Great Adventure, too, if you like roller coasters.

sounds nice man, you should be a travel agent, lol...if you arent already...I will add that to my schedule while there. I've been to NY numerous times, but never taken the time to explore New Jersey...I have the feeling that it's an underrated place..

Well, I don't know about throughout the entire state, but I know the mall I go to has a champs sports that has an entire wall of Jordans. The wall is like twenty feet by forty, I'm pretty sure they have every single one, including the original.

I only ask because if you go to NY or LA you can get almost every Jordan Retro shoe. I assumed NJ would have a lot of them since it's outside of NYC. Ive wanted to visit NJ in the future. I gotta buy Jordans online or go to MOA. Champs and Footlockers suck here (except the ones in MOA). Thanks.

Is there a huge difference in price between the Malls and the Outlets?
Are NJ malls considered inexpensive?
And also, any resturants that you guys recomend?
Thanks for your input so far...really helping me out!

Some beautiful outlet centers...If you go to Great Adventure you could hit the Jackson Oulet Mall right there...Jersey Gardens is the closest, but you could travel 70 miles north or so to NY, Woodbury Commons Outlet mall is huge...
If you want expensive, without going to 5th Avenue/NYC...Just head over to the Mall at Short Hills, which is an easy drive from Secaucus...

Yeah I heard about the Woodbury outlets...
Should I drive up there or should I go to the Jersey Garden outlets? Is it worth the drive?
Thanks a lot for your info..

Woodbury is definitely better...not only more/better stores, better stocked stores too...

I live on the Jersey shore - personally, I'd stay away from Seaside Heights. Most people that live in this area consider it "Sleezeside Heights". If you want to go to a really nice boardwalk area, try Pier Village (Long Branch) or Asbury Park. I'd definitely suggest going to Atlantic City or even Cape May if you want to make a slightly further trek down the coast. If you don't mind driving about 2 hours to the end of New Jersey, you can take a ferry over in to Delaware and visit Rehoboth Beach which is definitely a cool spot in the summer.
Shop in NJ, eat in NY. If you make it to Asbury or Pier Village, you'll find a lot of good restaurants though. Don't expect to do a lot in Secaucus. Most people think Jersey is dirty, but the area you'll be staying in has a lot of factories... it's just a misconception.
Let me know if you want to know anything else.

All right guys, a lot of good ideas.
I'm thinking about going to Atlantic City, it sound nice. I'd like to drive around Jersey and explore my surroundings a lot.
Like I said I'm coming in from Europe, Iceland to be exact. I'm a basketball player so I'd like to buy some basketball stuff (shoes, shorts etc. The stuff we get in my home country is expensive and not a lot of variety).
I've been thinking about the Great Adventure park. It's really just me and my girlfriend. Would we have fun going there? Is it mostly for kids/teenagers? (We are in our mid 20's).
I don't mind factories at all. I've been to the States very often and I always enjoy seeing how most Americans live (even a mundane thing like going to Wal-Mart is really a special thing, because we don't have big stores like that).
Anyways, yeah...so you guys would recomend driving to the Woodbury outlets even though NY has sales tax on shoes and clothes? Or can the same stuff be found in NJ for better price?
One thing my Girlfriend and I will certainly do is going to a WNBA game (probably the Liberty vs. LA Sparks). She is also a basketball player and her best friend will probably go the WNBA next year, so we'd like to see the league and how high the standard of womens basketball is there.
Has somebody been to a wnba game? Do you need to order tickets in advance or can you just show up?
I'm really thankful for all the great Ideas and responses you guys have given me!
I know I have a lot of questions, I hope it's not anoying.
If you guys have anything more you'd recomend seeing please let me know.
Thank you!

No, no, Great Adventure is for everyone, as long as you like roller coasters. If you don't like roller coasters, then you can still have fun, but...it has the largest and fastest coaster in the world, its what its known for.
I don't mind factories at all. I've been to the States very often and I always enjoy seeing how most Americans live (even a mundane thing like going to Wal-Mart is really a special thing, because we don't have big stores like that).
Well, if you ever drive down the Turnpike, you'll be seeing a lot of oil refineries, which most people assume is all over the state, but its not.
Anyways, yeah...so you guys would recomend driving to the Woodbury outlets even though NY has sales tax on shoes and clothes? Or can the same stuff be found in NJ for better price?
Well, it depends. If you're willing to drive, yeah, go to Woodbury Commons. Jersey Gardens is fine, but Woodbury Commons is better, plain and simple. That's if you want outlet malls. If you want just a regular mall to walk around in, maybe buy some things, then stay in Jersey. New Jersey doesn't have a sales tax on clothing, while New York does, up to like 150 dollars or something like that.
Has somebody been to a wnba game? Do you need to order tickets in advance or can you just show up?

You can usually just show up and get tickets at the ticket booth. No on really goes, to be honest.
I know I have a lot of questions, I hope it's not anoying.

Thank you!
Not annoying at all. Most of us want to dispel the misconceptions about Jersey, so answering all the questions is actually refreshing, rather than having to deny the misconceptions.

OK good to know I'm not anoying you
Anyways... Do you guys recomend going to Woodbury's then? I don't really mind driving.
I'm going to check out some malls, I've already found a couple of them not far away from my Hotel.
I'm thinking about going down to Delaware...
I just love finding new places, everybody is talking about NY all the time and forget NJ.
Where would you recomend buying basketball shoes and stuff like that?
Like I said, thank you for everything!
I hope NJ Nets will have a good season, definitely my 2nd favorite team!

I haven't been there in a long time, but Liberty Science Center used to be a good time, it's right in Jersey City, which is right by Secaucus.

I forgot, if you're going to be here at the end of July there is the annual hot air balloon festival if that kind of thing interests you. I went to it a couple times when I was young, haven't been to it in at least 12 years, but it was pretty fun.
