4-Team Trade: Courtney Lee Out, Troy Murphy In

Post#1 » by kamaze » Wed Aug 11, 2010 5:36 pm

The Hornets, Rockets, Pacers and Nets are on the verge of a four-team trade, according to a report from Chad Ford.

Darren Collison and James Posey would be sent to Indiana, Trevor Ariza would go to New Orleans, Courtney Lee would go to Houston, while New Jersey would receive Troy Murphy.

The deal is in the advanced stages, according to sources.

Hope it goes through that gives them more scoring rebounding up front and put less pressure on Favors to produce now.

More time for T-Will which is nice but... Murphy's not exactly a good defender or fleet of foot... He's a wide body so it'll be interesting to see how things work out defensively.

As for C-Lee... There was a time when I was really down on him, but he showed good improvement as the year progressed. Still didn't look like a star in the making but hopefully Williams and Morrow step up their defense with more minutes, because that was the one end of the court where Lee always brought it.

My only concern is how this kind of puts the Nets smack dab in the middle of nowhere. We could honestly be looking at last year's version of the Pacers (32-50) if guys like Travis Outlaw don't pan out.

I could see why people wouldn't like it as mikhailjordan does have a point that it puts us in the middle of nowhere. However, Troy Murphy is a solid offensive player and also an expiring. Combined with our multiple picks over the next two drafts, he could be a very valuable asset come trade deadline.

Sure, what does Troy Murphy do for us? Wins us, perhaps, 5 to 8 more games? Sweet. Are we in the playoffs? No? Then what's the point?

Now, if you're excited over him because he'll probably be traded at the deadline, that's fine, but there should be no excitement for the basketball aspect of this.

Also, I was speaking about the trade as a whole: New Orleans is getting basically nothing out of this for a guy that was supposed to bring back a lot of value for them.

Indiana wins this trade hands down.

The way I see it. It's a great move. The hornets pretty much just stated they're not trading CP3 with that move. Then we all knew we were pretty crowded in the back court. I love this move...more time for Twill to develop and Troy Murphy is a great addition and pretty much a big we needed. He'll start and Favors can substitute for him and Lopez.

The one downside is that we'll probably win more games and hence a lower lottery spot but...If it works out and these guys buy into Avery's system maybe..just maybe we make the playoffs? Meh probably too much of a stretch but I still like this move.

Well I like it.
Troy's a rebounding machine and he spreads the floor.

This gives them talent at the power forward, now Humps and Favors come off the bench where they belong for now.

It's a long shot but if Sean May looks great he makes the team and Humps can be traded for a pick.

Hey. Knicks fan (and closet Nets fan) here. I began following the Nets since I first saw them in the LI Arena in Hempstead (Sonny Dove, Lavern Tart, Billy Melchione, Rick Barry, etc.) It seems like the Nets really needed a player at PF. Were you really going to start the season with Chris Humphries starting there?

Or maybe it's just that Lee was too small to consistently create offense for himself, and was a terrible playmaker.

Hey don't get me wrong, I don't entirely blame the guy since it was obvious that he was asked to play a role that was far too big for him but there comes a point in time when you have to stop with the excuses.

well said. We all know about his defense capabilities. Offensively, Lee is good in open court and can knock down the open J, but ask him to create offense and you run into trouble.

I love the trade. It kills two birds with one stone. We get a player who can start for us right away while favors develops AND we get his 11 mil expiring contract which we can use at the deadline if something comes up. I like this trade very much.

As of right now I really don't know what to think. Is this enough to make a push for the 7th or 8th seed I hope so. If we can then I'll be happy but if we are the 9th or 10th seed then this makes absolutely no sense.

So I guess right now I welcome Murphy to the Nets. I think he is a nice fit here (he used to kill us) with his ability to spread the floor and rebound.

I really hope we don't regret this deal. Good luck to C.Lee I had high hopes for him but he will do nice things for Houston they should be happy to have him.

Edit: Who is the starting SG now T-Will? Should we go shooter (Morrow) or playmaker (T-Will) I like T-Will right now. I think we will have enough shooters to keep teams honest with Outlaw and Murphy and I think they will benefit more with T-Will in the starting lineup creating.

Harris/Farmar
T-Will/Morrow
Outlaw/James
Murphy/Favors
Lopez/Petro

If it does anything at all it balances out our roster very nicely.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!!

1) Getting rid of C-Lee will give T-Will solid 2 guard minutes.
2) Murphy is an expiring, a great rebounder, and can really spread the floor, a great stop gap PF.
3) Allows Favors to develop and not be put on the cooker right away.
4) Great guy to have come trade-deadline.

5) Expiring Troy Murphy >>>>>>>>> 120 mil Stoudemire.

6) I'm talking playoffs + better record than the Knicks + having great contracts.

Damn I just took a quick look at his numbers. He is much better then I was thinking. I was really impressed with his EFF and 3pt%. Anything over 20 EFF and 40% 3pt is really good and he is right there on both.

15 pts
10rbs
2 apg
47% fg
39% 3pt
20.49 EFF
1.0 spg

That second part was not correct. Adding his expiring contract wouldnt come at the expense of long term ones It would be at the expense of PURE cap space. Cap space is MORE valuable than an expiring contract since it saves a team pure cash without requiring a salary match.

Make no mistake...we dont gain tradeable assets...we give them up if this deal goes down. However, a more accurate way to say what you were trying to say is....we wouldnt be out of a potentail deal at the deadline because of Troy since he is expiring. However, the league is LOADED with nice size expiring contracts at the trade deadline. The cap space...from December 15th on was a true chip. We would now be simply in the mix with everyone else. MORE assets would have to be added if this deal down for future deals since we will not be able to simply absorb salary.

This trade if it goes down is made for TROY. On talent...its a huge gain. Adding a 10 rebound guy with a legit three point shot who can spread the floor for the swingman most of us currently have at the bottom of our depth chart. We are basically able to do that BECAUSE of the cap space. Lee isnt the big deal of what we give up..its the UBER valuable cap space.

The question becomes...is it worth it in the long run? What is the gain? Good news is...not a long term commitment. But how does it help us? Does it make Favors expendable for a deal? OK...for who? Does it make us a playoff team? Probably not....but it does move us further to the middle.

So we get further away from higher draft picks, give up cap space for the moment...and fill in a short term blank with an older veteran player whose health record leaves something to be desired.

Nothing against the player...against the direction this takes us....and wondering if we are instead patient...can we do better later?

Well, glad I get to watch a guy I do like. Hell...fantasy hoops wise...I love this guy. I hope playing for us doesnt ruin that! I love drafting him....lol.
