Favors Says 'Fans Need To Be Patient'

Favors Says Fans Need to be Patient
Kevin Clark

Nets PF Derrick Favors was the #3rd pick in June's Draft, but he said last week not to expect big things from him right away. Favors said that he assumes his role will be to "provide a spark off the bench" while he develops a better post up game. Favors is considered a raw prospect. He said the team singled out his moves close to the basket as his biggest weakness. To improve, he has spent the summer learning with Sam Mitchell & Popeye Jones.

I'm so glad we have such a great coaching staff now, Mitchell and Popeye working with our promising rookie big is really nice to read.

Good to hear Sam and Bugeye are working with him and he's listening. Do some squats to add strength and put some weight on. Sounds like they allready gave him a role.++++

The team is looking good so far compared to last year...They seemed to have made alot of good moves this summer. Not thrusting the rookie into the starting lineup was definitely the right thing to do. Hopefully he can learn from playing with Troy and Brook everyday in practice.

Really not a surprise. I just want to see flashes of him beastin' this season. Consistency will come in time.

As long as he knows his roll, I think he can contribute this season. It's not going to be a huge contribution but if he just plays his game (grab rebounds and gets garbage buckets) he certainly won't hurt us. I just hope the coaches work hard with him and he has a great work ethic...it would be great if it's another Brook Lopez scenario.

I really have no expectations from him this year. Just hope he earns his burn. And keeps developing. But I expect 100% effort. So i do expect something fromm after all. lol

Shouldn't they hire a hall of famer like an Ewing and Hakeem-Kareem type to work with him?

I like that he's humble. I don't expect him to be a star this season but I hope to see some flashes. Also it would be nice to have a guy like Hakeem coach him but it's not all that necessary. If Favors put the work in he should be alright without the hall of fame big man coach. I think Mitchell and Jones would be good mentors. Also I think Hakeem has his own training camp of some sort so maybe he can stop down there for the extra pointers sometime in the future.

Just say no to Ewing. YES to KAJ. Brooklyn native, supremely gifted teacher would ensure that both Brook and Derrick maximize their potential.

Just because someone is a great player doesn't make him a great teacher. In fact, sometimes the greatest athletes are poor teachers precisely because they can't comprehend the limitations that lesser humans have. There was a great part in Moneyball about Jim Rice's deficiencies as a hitting coach in this regard. Similarly, I don't think anyone wants to put Michael Jordan in charge of player development after the job he did on Kwame Brown.

To be fair though, Rip Hamilton credits MJ's tutelage for turning him into an All-star. KAJ is credited for Bynum's development from an overweight and undermotivated project to a top-10 center. He would do wonders for our dynamic frontcourt duo.

First of all, Ewing is focusing on Dwight now and he's an assistant coach with the Magic. KAJ doesn't want to do anything more than have his reserved role with mentoring Bynum. Hakeem seems to be content just giving clinics and training sessions with players, not being their full time assistant/mentor. I think Favors will be fine with the guys we have. It's funny how a lot of people were bashing the coaching staff when they first came on and have now switched views. I guess we'll have to wait until the season starts to see if people switch again.

Ewing has done a horrible job of teaching post moves to Dwight. I would think Robinson, KAJ, or Hakeem would be better for teaching post moves. Hakeem doesn't want to coach full time though. He just likes giving short clinics.

Ewing was an example of how they got Ewing for Howard, KAJ for Bynum.

At some point gotta blame the player...not the coaches.

Ewing did good with Ming and Howard.
