Favors: Is Avery Full of It?

I was just warming to the idea of seeing Brook Lopez and our most recent lottery pick, Derrick Favors, working together. I'm skeptical that they mesh without getting in each others' way or holding each other back, but IF the blend is nice, it could be the preeminent PF/C duo in the league for the next decade.

Avery's comments since the drafting of Favors, especially his recent quotes, seemed so effusive with praise and encouragement that I couldn't imagine our FO trading the apple of their new coach's eye. With the recent Melo rumors, I'm left wondering why we didn't go after Anthony sooner as opposed to signing Travis Outlaw to a contract meant for a starting SF. Too, I wonder why we're in such a mad dash for Melo, when his trade value will be significantly lower in 3 short months. Having him in training camp as opposed to December isn't going to make a big difference to our season, as if we give away Devin and Favors, we're still another difference-making piece away from contending. A Melo-Lopez coupling with so-so starters at the PG, SG and PF is nothing more than a nuisance to teams like Boston, Chicago, Miami and even Orlando. Also, Carmelo has made it ABUNDANTLY clear that he'd rather be with the Knicks; why are we paying through the nose for a star who doesn't want to be here, and really, REALLY wants to be on our crosstown rivals' team?????

If Favors wasn't involved, if we hadn't already signing TrOut, if Melo seemed more amiable to coming here (and not acting like a spoiled child being forced to visit the museum), I'd be all for this deal. But the risk-reward is too negative, so I hope this deal falls apart, for now at least. I suppose I should be more upset at Prokhorov and King, as this sudden, short-sighted surge of interest in Melo smacks of their style. But I just thought the lil' General had more say in the organization than this. Either he's being left in the dark, or he's talking out of both sides of his mouth. The Duncan/Garnett comparisons made in the last 72 hours now sound hollow, as there is NO WAY I would trade a guy with that sort of potential for a semi-elite player.

OK, now, I feel I'm rambling; feel free to share your thoughts, gotta go.

You'll learn Avery always talks out of both sides of his mouth, Billy is Mik's puppet and right now we're in the process of building a business back up...because this aint about building a basketball team...But maybe through this process, if we get lucky, there is still a chance we still turn out alright...

However, give into all your prior Realgm basketball logic, what moves to make and how to make them...And dont be surprised if we force a player to come to the Nets who really doesnt want to play here...

Most fans will have no problem with this, some fans like yourself will be shaking their heads trying figure it out...All you have to remember is how the business is bigger than the championship...

Yep, I couldn't believe it myself. To think just a day before he was comparing Favors to KG + Duncan...I find it hard to believe that he was left in the cold about a possible Favors deal so I'm gonna guess that it was some sort of lame attempt to raise his value...Either way, I agree with you jerseyjac this is more of a business decision than it is a plan for a championship.

I'm still waiting to see how this works out...Hopefully it all blows over by Monday. Just say "No" to an extension Melo...you know you want to..

lol Favors probably doesn't look that good so they had Avery gas him up so Denver will jump all over it.

Avery loves to talk. He wanted Devin gone when he was in Dallas. Then he gets canned and Devin plays very well so he never wanted to trade Devin.

I warned you all of this when you were panning to fire Lawerence Frank and hire Avery Johnson but it was ignored.

He's still a good basketball mind though so hopefully everything works out.

You ask why didnt Nets go after Melo earlier, they did! The Nuggets were reluctant to trade him, now they are more open for what ever reasons thats going on behind the scenes. Every player on the Nets is worth Melo. Even thou Favors is still a question mark, he is not of extreme talent to by pass on Melo. The Nets do not have one player to build around and Melo will give you that player.

It's so disconcerting because this is all so eerily true.

Prokhorov does not approve!

Actually not only does Prokhorov approve, Prokhorov is secretly spearheading this campaign behind closed doors.

I mean did anyone really believe that line of bullshat that he was spewing about not being "just" a top 5 team?! I mean really?

This guy is full of it, best believe that.

Yes he is absolutely competitive and would like to win, but aside from the windfall of money that a champion brings, it is definitely not modi operandi for him, especially not at this stage.

This team is his vehicle for big money dealings and his foot in the door to the American money market and tristate area, along with the Rat's huge realestate deal to transform Brooklyn.

One day this team will be his play thing and he will give more thought into creating a winner, but right now the objective is to turn a sad franchise with a limited fair weather fan base into a marketing power house that competes on at least a near even keel with the big brother Knixies.

It's really that simple.

Guys...Please stop complaining..When it was about "BUSINESS" and ratner was cost cutting and being cheap...no one could stand it...So now that it is about "BETTER BUSINESS" and Prok is willing to make a splash and moves to get a marquee player, you guys dont want it....i dont understand...Honestly wht more could Avery do in this position...he has to play both sides of the fence just in case the deal doesnt go thru...True..We are giving up a PG and A POTENTIALLY GOOD PF....but its not Like We dont have any All star caliber Players....We Then Can Build Around MELO AND BROOK....With This Comes Attention..Something our team has been lacking since our deep playoff runs....we are on the verge of being the topic of discussion and being hated by KNICKS FANS...And I love it....

No one is questioning the logic of building around Brook and Melo. The problem is that this deal saps us of just about every asset we have that we can use to build around Brook/Melo. Unless Mikhail has his Russian goons outside of Paul's home in NO, that is...

You don't know a thing about whats going on behind closed doors. None of us do.

SOUP I don't mean to be a dick on this one, but what I speak is obvious and to believe otherwise on this one is naive, plain and simple.

And to add to that, where did I ever compare Proky to the Rat directly?
Reading comprehension FTL...

Ah I edited to avoid this, damn you for paying attention vc4p! Now we must argue and I will have one less friend on the Nets boards! Lets get it crackin then.

Even though you didn't compare Prokhy and Ratner directly you can pretty much safely take from the post where exactly your invisible jabs were headed.

I like to call this, "The Ratner Trauma".

No my friend, what you speak is not obvious, and to speak with such certainty about a situation you know little facts about is pretty foolish.

We cannot run the risk of Melo joining the Bricks, or the Bulls. We just CAN'T. I hate losing Favors and Devin as much as the next person, but it's positive step on where we want to go. Favors is not a sure thing, Devin is not a young peach anymore, and getting rid of him frees up something a lot of you go crazy over. CAPSPACE. We also trade 2 first round picks, 1 of them we hustled out of poor Golden State. So we will only be without a first for ONE YEAR.

We are not giving away all our assets, we still have plenty, and we will have ........ Yep you guessed it.... CAPSPACE.

Melo opens the door to other FA's. We have our draw if we have him.

Avery's focus is only on winning basketball games. If has a flaw, it is that he is a bit of a micro manager. In other words, he is going to put his stamp on the personnel, call almost every offensive play, and resist some of the input from assistant coaches. He's also really demanding on his point guards. Other than that, he'll raise expectations in NJ. And I think he'll take that team to the playoffs within a two year time frame.

Well you never really dogged Prokhy so badly before this trade was announced.

If I were a nets fan. I keep Favors anyday over Melo. You save a lot of money and develope one of the up and coming big men who will score, block shots and do it all for a player you have to play over 20 million a season. Yes he scores, but he gives it back on the other end and is not the fastest player down the floor to play some kind of defense. Going to give up that much for Melo. Are you kidding me.
