What are the reasons for the huge drop-off in Brook Lopez's rebounding performance this year?

IMO Avery Johnson doesn't know how to handle a young team. All he does is beat them down all the time. That isn't coaching, it's psychological abuse. Young players need to be coached up and encouraged. The way Avery is handling Lopez can't possibly help with landing Carmelo Anthony.

Health wise I think he's fine now...I cant believe he's not in games shape by now, or having energy problems...

He's back to having mental issues...at least thats what it looks like on TV...Brook is seen frustrated on the court, pouting on the bench...not taking criticism well...I keep saying to myself he is young and this is a man's league...When he plays like a man, you can see it in his game and obviously in his numbers...

After the game it wasnt any better...

Johnson called out his center, Brook Lopez, after the game because Lopez pulled down only two rebounds in a game that went to overtime. And there was one rebound Lopez didn’t manage to pull down, as the ball went off his hands and out of bounds following a missed free throw with just over 10 seconds left in regulation.

“It’s a free-throw rebound,” an agitated Johnson said. “Whatever happens, that’s the greatest gift you can get, is a free-throw rebound.”

Johnson let Lopez hear about it in the locker room and Lopez hustled out of the room just as reporters were entering, declining to answer any questions.

I saw that post game interview on Avery at the YES website and he just looked visibly frustrated and disgusted with Lopez. Who knows how Lopez would react to him calling him out publicly like that. But there honestly is no excuse for his poor rebounding when he's just not putting the effort in.

There's times where I see a player on the other team puts a shot up...and instead of Lopez going down low to try and get the rebound he darts to the opposite side of the floor while his man would just run to the basket and get the offensive rebound. There's also the problem that instead of going up and trying to grab rebounds with both hands...he goes up with one hand and tips them..often tipping them to the other team. This is what happened on the missed ft opportunities we had against Sacramento and the Bobcats late game...which drove Avery crazy.

Because he's just not a very good rebounder?

Sometimes there are no anwsers as to why these things happen. Remember when Twin went from a decent free throw shooter to horrific. In Brooks case I'm confident that he will get back on track and continue to improve.

To be honest, there's no excuse to be putrid in rebounding when you stand 7 feet tall. I just don't understand why he's terrible right now nearing Bargnani territory.

He used to be an average rebounder when he was in college, given that the competition in the NBA is stronger, I still don't expect him to have a piss poor performance.

Rebounding is a skill that CAN be learned. I think he needs to review tapes of great rebounders, or ask for tips or even hire a big man trainer.

I'm glad that he's providing us the necessary offense, but he still needs to assert himself more. He may not have the athleticism of Dwight but his fundamentals are above average. I'm sure he'll learn these things. I just hope he realizes it soon...

He's not grabbing any boards because he's leaking out early to position himself for the offense, like guards tend to do. Should he stay down low and fight for rebounds, he would easily get 8-9 boards a night, like he did last season.

I agee 100%...yeh there are definitely other factors, but the major reason has to do with him not actually being under the basket when the oppositino misses a shot...still, he should be able to grab more than 6 a game...On top of that he does get lackadaisical, with Kris on the floor...even Favors, ect...its like he thinks, "oh, they got the rebound"...Brook does needs to stick around under the glass and rebound too, but it gets difficult to manage when you are also thinking the above...leak out/fast break and or early offensive post position...

Rebounding is just one of many areas in which Brook simply doesn't have that "it" factor to allow him to ascend to the next level in the NBA, which is All-Star status. He wants to please his coach, but Avery wants him to accept the mantle of THE MAN in New Jersey, and Lopez' shoulders simply aren't broad enough.

I will say it again, if this dream PF/C duo is going to fulfill their massive potential, it is entirely in the hands of Derrick to become the #1 option. Lopez can be a killer luxury as a 2nd banana, but he doesn't want be the leader. It's just not IN him.

If he went after defensive boards harder I don't think he'd have a problem getting 9-10+
