This should have probably been posted on the random topics thread but it would probably get lost in there. Hey Ross the Boss, make a KEEP DERRICK FAVORS Signature for all of us Favors homers.

I approve this message...
No matter what, I will be dissappointed to see this kid go without him getting real minutes in a Nets uniform...right now he's averaging 18:53min, has only seen 20min+ in 12 out of 30 games and has played over 25min only 3 times with not playing more than 28:27min. back on November 6th vs Miami in a blowout (recently in Dec. vs Boston and Philly he topped the 27min. mark...)
Favors needs to get a start in the next 10 games...

Wiretap:
Nets Want Favors To Give Them Reason To Start HimAvery Johnson said earlier this month that he was looking to put rookie Derrick Favors into the starting lineup earlier than the Nets projected, but the forward is still coming off the bench.
"What we told him today — he's got to give us a reason to start him," Johnson said. "We need to see more consistency. He needs to dunk on three people in a night."
Johnson added that the team does have a plan for Favors to start, and he said, "I would have liked to have done it around here."
Kris Humphries has played well, making it hard for New Jersey to take him out of the starting lineup.
Don't get me wrong, I like Humphries, but the team is 9-21, who gives a **** about a short term starting option at PF playing well.
And Avery wants a reason?
He's a 19 year old rookie drafted with the 3rd pick overall on a team that has won 9 out of 30 games. He's not playing behind Dirk Nowitzki. Blake Griffin is starting for his sorry ass team, John Wall is, Wesley Johnson too. Evan Turner has been sucking so we'll leave him out of it. He's also playing behind a star named Andre Iguodala.
Favors is ranked 12th in total dunks made while only playing 18.9 minutes on average.
His defense has been solid most of the time. He almost all the time has a higher +/- than the guys in the starting lineup. He has multiple highlight dunks on youtube already.
His PER36 numbers are solid: 12.5 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1 block per game.
He's #1 in field goal percentage on his team and #1 amongst the top 10 rookies.
and Avery still needs a reason.

I always thought a pretty good reason to start him is because we drafted with the 3rd pick last year. Apparently that's not good enough.

exactly...right now, even if his first start is around the corner, all these excuses are just that...
Avery just knows how to play the violin and his music is beginning to bore me...

Well, this is exactly what I said when Avery first started talking about starting Favors. Gotta earn it...worst thing a coach can do, especially a club like this trying to rebuild its identity and legitimacy, is to hand out a starting gig because the kid was drafted 3rd overall, even if he isn't quite ready yet.

Speedy, what does Favors have to do for you to feel comfortable with him getting his *first career start...
Point is, this has nothing to do with handing out the starting gig to Favors, he has to earn that...but right about now, its time to see him play a game in a starting position so the Nets can check what a 30min plus game can do for him in that role at this point of the season...

There's two things that I want to see from him for me to say "ok, you're good to go".
First, cut down on stupid fouls. This is the biggest thing for me. The obvious illegal screens, the push on the back, those has to go.
Secondly, need to be active defensively. Has to be. Often, I see someone attack the basket and he watches instead of challenging the shot.
When he gets to the point that his fouls are coming from aggressive moves (offensively or defensively) instead of dumb rookie fouls, then I might be more inclined to put him in there.

good post. especially agree with the bolded part. From the coaching standpoint I would think the offensive fouls are the biggest source of frustration since they're obvious and I'm sure the simplest thing to correct. In the short term the lack of attention to detail is what will keep him out of the lineup, even with only the one dimensional Hump ahead of him.
Harder to correct is his laid back mentality which is ultimately where he needs the most long term development. I think it's pretty obvious Avery is dangling the carrot on the stick to get some more aggression out of him. He has the talent that if he simply had the agressive mentality of KMart he would be the East's version of Blake Griffin - with more upside.
All in all I agree with OP - keep Favors, trade the picks, and god willing Outlaw.

The thing is, at this point, Hump is doing everything we thought we'd get out of Favors as a rookie...a hustle guy who rebounds. The one thing that Favors can give us with the right mindset, is that man-to-man defender and a guy who can protect the paint. I think he's played well enough to be considered for the start, but like I said, the stupid rookie fouls has got to go.
If he gets 6 fouls a game and only plays 20 minutes, I don't care, as long as those 6 fouls were spent trying to swat a ball or on charging fouls where he tried to dunk on someone's face.

I do not feel as strongly about keeping Favors as some Nets fans do, but I do feel he has more than proven enough to start. I also think the Favors/Lopez combination helps give us a more complementary bench frontcourt duo, as Humphries and Murphy fit well together IMO.
I'd also like to see James start at SF, once he gets back to 100%.

I don't even know that he needs or deserves to start, but he does need and deserve a minimum of a consistent 25 minutes per game.

Man I remember on draft night my friend (Knicks fan) was ripping me for getting the third pick. Of coarse I was pissed we didn't land #1 but I told him thank God we didn't land #2. I was terribly against drafting Turner. Not one thing stands out about him, (shooting, handle, hops). I wanted Favors so bad after we missed out on Wall and now I have pray that my dumbass GM doesn't trade him away for a guy who doesn't want to be here.
