Billy King told the New York Daily News he doesn't think Lopez will ever be a 10-12 rebound a game guy.

“I don’t think Brook is ever going to be a 10-rebound guy. Rik Smits, I think, at his best was a seven-rebound guy. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, as great a scorer as he was, he wasn’t a great rebounder. Some guys have a knack for it. Some guys don’t,” King said. “I think he could get better at it, I just don’t think it’s something where he’s going to be a 10-, 12-rebound guy a night. I just don’t think it’s in him.”

I hope he's just trying to light a fire under him because that seems outrageous. Lopez's rebounding has taken a hit this year but a lot of that is the situation. He's playing with much better rebounders (Favors/Murphy/Humphries) than he did his first two season playing next to Yi. Avery is also letting him stay on the perimeter enough to attempt 7 16-23ft. jumpers per 40 minutes. Motivation is a piece as well, but to imply he doesn't have the ability to accomplish that seems crazy. Am I wrong?

I don't think what King said is outrageous at all.. hell, before the season even started I said that Brook would never average 10 a game in his career. He's just not a good a rebounder, but he isn't this this bad either.. I expect Brook to average 8-9 throughout his career.

Agreed.

Matter of fact on the General Board I predicted Brook to go 20/9/2/2 on great efficiency.

So maybe it's more likely that he averages 8-9. But I felt like the implication of King's statement was that he didn't have the skill level or desire, basically the capability to average more than ten. Which seems ridiculous. If he was playing alongside Michael Beasley or Josh McRoberts on a team that asked him to play more on the interior on offense we still don't think it's possible he gets more than ten a game?

Well, he played with Yi for two years and he still couldn't hit 9.

Yeah, well that sounds about right.

this issue was addressed in the topic earlier about making everyone available and king just confirmed my concerns. but i dont agree with the kareem comparison AT ALL... kareem averaged close to 17 rebounds a game one season in fact he averaged over 12 a game for the first 10 years of his career. rik smits is not an alltime great either. ALL of the all-time great 7 footers were terrific rebounds and brook doesnt have the desire nor the natural nose for the ball to achieve those types of numbers.

bull. Murphy isn't getting off the bench. Favors is playing what, 18 minutes a game? Humphries is a beast, but there's room for more than one double-digit rebounder in the starting lineup. Dude's getting all the minutes he can handle and is only averaging SIX boards a game as a 7ft center on a team that doesn't score the ball all that well and has a defensive mindset.

Derrick is averaging five boards a game in half the playing time.



It's all on Brook.

Eleqtrique is right, at this point, it's pretty clear that Brook just isn't a rebounder. Though i'm not saying this would be a good thing to do, but if you put troy murphy out there with those minutes, you would see 12+ rebounds. It just isn't in Brook.

He doesn't have the desire to rebound the ball. It seems that it's either he's not trying or he's deferring to his teammates...

I don't know. If you're a legit 7 footer and doesn't get your 2nd rebound until the 3rd quarter, then something's wrong with you...
