Tell me about Favors

First off congrats on landing Deron. You got a steal there if you can keep him.

But, let me know about Favors. I've never seen him play. I'd like to know everything you can tell me about him.

He is a beast, he didn't get the minutes or plays called for him that he deserved. He is very very raw but when he's agressive with the ball and attacks the basket he is very hard to stop.

Defensively he is good and will get even better. At the minute you get a good defensive player whole rebounds very well (great at getting offensive rebounds).

I'd say in a year or two once he starts to learn a few more offensive moves he will be a very good PF. I think he will play alot at centre for the Jazz.

I personally think he can be the future PF for Jazz for years.

I rated the kid highly

Well, I think you're better off reading the Derrick Favors Progression thread, as that will give you tons of info (though you'll have to go through a lengthy thread to find them), but here's my overview:

- Good athlete. Not explosive like Amare or Dwight when they came in, but I say comparable, if not more athletic than say, Nene when he came out.

- Good kid, coachable. Quiet demeanor, and has handled all of the trade talk better than the veteran Devin Harris.

- Can finish with EITHER hand. And by finish I don't just mean dunks. I mean, semi-hooks, lay-ins, etc.

- Still very much learning the game, and comes off very passive because of it (also has to do with his demeanor).

Progress has been slow...but steady. His numbers aren't popping off the stat sheet, but watching him you see things that he messed up on earlier in the year, he is picking up now.

Give him another year or so, and that's when you'll see who he'll become as a player.

And it's because it's fashionable to post youtube highlights:

Favors is raw.... I haven't see anything special from him compared to the usual 5-10 big man picks. He's got young player's athletic energy. I won't miss him.

Harris is likable (I like him), but he's lost either all his game or passion for game since becoming injury prone. Right now he's no better than than either ex-Lakers backcourt Nets now have:- Farmar and Vujacic

Speedy summed it up well.

I will say the only thing that is holding Favors back at this point, of course in addition to the obvious that he is so raw and green, is the fact he isn't aggressive most of the time.

I'm undecided if it's his laid back demeanor or because he's so young and has been thrown into the fire in a grown man's game, so he's nervous and doesn't want to step on toes...

That's my assumption. You can just see it that he's thinking too much, trying to analyze things instead of just reacting. Once it catches up, I think he'll be more active.

Still won't see crazy Howard/Amare expressions from him though.

Favors is a 6'9 PF.

Sorry to say it, but Utah lost.

He's 6'10 with a 7'3 wingspan...besides your information being wrong, what does that have to do with his ability?

Fine.

I still don't see him improving without playing time and considering he's behind Millsap and Jefferson - 2 far superior PFs - he will play less on Utah than he did on NJ.

Jefferson has been playing C all season long with Millsap at PF. Our back-up bigs are Fes and Elson so I see Favors getting the same minutes as he had in NJ.

Well, if Okur comes back that's a crowded rotation.

I think one of your bigs will be traded for prospects and picks by Thursday.

This trade will likely come down to the way that Favors progresses. He looks like a big time rebounder who has the ability to become a monster finisher in the paint and to change shots around the rim. I'll take that all day.

And to the guy that compared his athleticism to Nene....I won't tell you about Favors, because I haven't watched him much this year, but Nene is by no means a "good" athlete. At least not in the sense that the term is usually taken to mean. Nene has quick feet for a big man and is nimble. But he's not much of a leaper and he doesn't play above the rim. I watched a ton of Favors in college and have kept up with him this season as best I could this year without LP, and Favors is far more athletic than Nene has ever been. I think what you were shooting for is more along the lines of, say, Al Horford. Am I right?

Horford is a good comparison body wise. Skill wise they are on a different planet but obviously Favors has time on his side.

If Favors develops a jump shot and refines his ball handling I think a Horford type player is his ceiling.

In a worst case scenario Favors will still develop into a tremendous rebounder he pulls rebounds out of the air that he had no business getting.

A very coachable player and strong around the basket. Once he fills out then my god he's going to be very hard to stop around the basket.

About the only negative I have about Favors is that he is completely unreliable when it comes to creating his own shot right now.

Favors is going to be a beast if put in the right environment.

Again, I'm not convinced he's a true star, but he's going to be a very important piece.

It's not just that he has absolutely no offensive skill set, which can be simply a question of time. More worrying, I think, is that he doesn't move with the same smooth, powerful fluidity that you saw from guys like Amare and Dwight even in their rookie seasons. Overall, he just isn't on their level athletically. He's a very good athlete, but not a great one. I think a slightly better NJ-era Kenyon Martin (sans aggression :)) is a very realistic projection for his ceiling. 16 PPG 10 RPG 2 BPG. Never quite comfortable creating with the basketball, but an elite finisher at the rim and capable of knocking down a 15 footer. And he'll probably be even more imposing defensively.

Favors is a good young prospect. But is just that a prospect. He needs major time to develop his game. I think he will be a solid big man in the future that rebounds very well and blocks some shots but has no offensive game.

I highly doubt he will be a star player in this league. I know he is young and raw and still developing but he doesn't seem to show the drive and aggressiveness on the court that other star players have in their rookie years. He is not going to be howard. I say best case is a josh smith type player but not as athletic. He is athletic but not the freak athlete we thought he was. He misses a lot of dunks around the rim and lay-ups for an athletic player.

so far his offensive game is almost completely absent. He hasn't shown any real post moves. He does seem to have a decent outside shot up to 15 feet. He gets most of his points off offensive rebound put backs and open dunks his teammates get for him. other than that he isn't a good offensive player.

He is a very good defensive player and rebounder. He holds his own against good players but does pick up a ton of fouls (so does every rookie big man). Blocks shots and rebounds are his big assets. He will be a great shot blocker and a great rebounder if he keeps up his aggressiveness which disappeared a lot this season.

if he works on showing up every night and every possession then he will be a very good pf in this league if he works on his offensive game.
