Woj: Nets High on Nene's List

A section of a Woj article:
Nets high on Nene’s list of suitors

As NBA teams start to make a push for Denver Nuggets free-agent center Nene, front office officials are angling to be the first to meet with him at midnight Dec. 9 in his native Brazil.

“That will go down to the wire,” a source close to Nene said.

The Nuggets, New Jersey Nets, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers and Portland Trail Blazers were among the teams that reached out to Nene’s representatives Wednesday, the first day teams were allowed to contact agents to discuss potential deals.

Once the offers arrive, it could take more than $13 million annually to sign Nene. While the market is still developing for him and the rest of a thin free-agent class, he’s clearly the focus for every team with cap space and the need for an inside presence. The Nuggets are pressed to keep him, and would likely have to pay significantly more than would’ve been necessary if they had worked a deal with him prior to his opting out this summer.

The Nets could be the major threat for Nene because of their combination of salary-cap space and desire to surround Williams with as much talent as possible to convince him to sign an extension. Privately, Williams has made it clear that he’s far less inclined to re-sign a long-term deal with the Nets if they don’t immediately improve their roster. New Jersey can also gather assets and still stay in position to make trade offers to the Orlando Magic for Dwight Howard.

NetIncome from NetsDaily confirmed this earlier, saying that Nets are in the lead for Nene. But at the same time, I read Nets are going to offer Nene 13-14 million

I've been a Nets fan for like 9 years now and have yet to see this team nab a top Free Agent. Hope that changes with Nene in the upcoming weeks.

While I don't think Nene is worth 14 mil, I wouldn't be mad at all if it came to that number just to sign him. He would be overpayed by 2 or 3 mil per season but it wouldn't be an outrageous sum for a third option and in my opinion he's the perfect player to fit that position. In comparison to other third options on contenders: Bynum is due 15 mil this year, Bosh 16 mil, Luol Deng 13 mil, Parker, 12.5 mil etc..

As long as the Nets still have the available space to trade for Dwight would I give this signing my stamp of approval. Not sure what the cap space looks like right now but if the rumored deal of Brook and 2 first rounders for Dwight and Turkoglu were to go through would they still be able to keep Nene??

LOL, is this guy serious? Aren't you in your mid-twenties? Why is it every now and then you start this spiel? We get it dude you're the coolest **** Nets fan ever, you're so dedicated and you've loved the team since you were a sperm getting drunk off your daddy's Pabst Blue Ribbon intake while he was cheering on Michael Ray Richardson.

Oh yeah, but you're gone day we hit Brooklyn... Some fan...

Well, GTFO then please!

What the hell are you talking about? Every now and then I start this spiel??? When do I ever say Im a better Nets fan than anyone else? When Im attacked for having a differing opinion or being pissed at the moves management has made?? I dont know why you seem to have a problem with me. And I am a fan of the HOME TEAM buddy. Brooklyn is not my home so why am I going to support them? And I dont like the Jets or Giants because they play in NJ but are "too good" to be named the NJ Giants or Jets.

Im going to make an analogy so maybe people like VC4P could understand why I wont support the Brooklyn Nets. Lets say you have a girlfriend and everything is going well while your rival is sitting in the corner all jealous because his girlfriend is trash. Then out of jealousy of not having such a good GF your rival swoops in and says "hey look I have money and can build us a big house and everyone knows my name", so the girl leaves for the other guy. Are you still going to like that girl??? Compare that to I have a favorite basketball team that was doing really well while New York stunk it up. So a few New Yorkers get jealous and said hey we need to buy the Nets and move them to New York. Bruce Ratner and Jay-z can !#%$ &*#(@&* &#*$#*@() *#$*@& @#*$ @#$* @#$%&# $*#$ @#*. I will never support New York sports. If the Nets were moving to Timbuktu would they still be your favorite team?

Stopped reading after, "why I wont support the Brooklyn Nets."

Anyway back on topic, if we sign Nene for anything under $14million it will be a superb signing.

Would be interested to see if its possible to bring in another max player with Derons possible new contract, Nene at £13million and cap holds etc. Think I read somewhere next season (Brooklyn's first season) the cap could rise to $61million or something but I'd be interested to know if we could sign Nene and still make room for a max in the summer.

I became a nets fan when I was 14-15 years old recovering from the yanks' 2001 world series loss. Even though I did become a fan during the golden years, I didn't follow the NBA much less did I have a favorite team prior to the nets. I've stuck around during the rodney buford/jacque vaughn era, the 12 win team and travis outlaw. I think I've earned the title of true nets fan

13 yea, but 14 is overpaying. I know its just an extra mill, but it counts.

Eh, I mean I hear what you're saying and you have a point.

Well if I'm reading this right.

As in 13 is the max he should get and is already an overpay of sorts, going over that is the straw that broke the camel's back.

So what's the max Nene can get from us?? because i doubt he'll come here if it isn't the max....Say we did sign him to a max contract,How long until we can trade him?He would be a good consolation prize for Orlando if they're going to lose/trade DH.
