How can you offer a contract like that to Nene and expect to get Dwight?

I can see the stretch cap provision being used on Nene but would even that help us?

This is 20 million more than he's worth. 4 years 40 million is the max i would give Nene. Maybe Nets are worried they will be penalized for this Dwight Howard supposed meeting and want to sign someone before they lose assets. I agree that signing Nene will put us out of Howard running, especially if its for 60 million for 4 years, the Magic won't want that bad of a contract in return for Howard. Its almost immediately a terrible contract, cmon Nets, don't outbid yourselves, who else is going to offer Nene that much that he wants to play for?

On plus side we do get to keep Lopez if we go with Nene. But i don't know who rebounds the ball out of Nene and Lopez in the frontcourt, both are pretty poor rebounders for big men. Unless we resign Humphries and play him at SF...

Correct me if i'm wrong but anyone we sign as a free agent wouldn't be able to be traded until some point at midseason, at least thats how the old CBA was. Plus, if we sign him to some ridiculously large contract and he underperforms early on, the Magic won't want him as part of a trade package.

Also, i'm pretty sure Nene doesn't want to sign some place without reassurances he isn't going to be immediately traded to some rebuilding project in Orlando. He obviously wants to play with D-Will and in Brooklyn if he's signing here. Unless him and his agent spend all of their time in Brazil in a hut with no internet, they are probably aware the Nets want Dwight Howard and lack the pieces to trade for him.

Can't trade him for six months I believe if this is the contract. Seems weird timing for the Nets to overpay; maybe they know Dwight is coming in the offseason or something...I don't know :(

Pretty sure this means the Dwight dream is dead :(

Such a shame that some stupid meeting with Dwight is going to take us out of the running for him. The NBA is really doing its best to keep its superstars on their drafted teams this year through ALL means necessary. Ridiculous.

Its not ridiculous at all. Teams need to sell tickets. Young stars are the face of franchises. Teams spend millions building a brand, an identity, that they can sell to fans. To have an investment like that walk away is horrific from not only a basketball but also a financial standpoint.

Brand loyalty is a big deal.

We can trade for Dwight and even Hedo after signing Nene while keeping him out of the trade, it just makes it a lot more complicated and limits a little of salary relief for Orlando.

Good - F them. Part of me really wishes we can lock down Nene and go into the season with Lopez. I think with talent around him he is going to beast this year. I think his scoring may go down but his efficiency will go up and Id almost guarantee he goes over 9 RPG. Guy will have more value than Bynum by mid-January.

and morrow I think. That gets the salary exiting to the additional 13+ MM to cover Nene. Might have to add in either James or Brooks too.

While this may not kill a Dwight deal, it seems to make it vastly less likely. Orlando would have no interest in Nene.

So...game of bluff here between Nets and Magic?

Dwight tells Magic he wants trade to Nets, Nets offer Brook + 2 1sts and take on Hedo's deal.

Magic wants more, NJ balks at it. Magic fabricates "tampering" allegations as a way to scare Nets to give up more.

Nets "leak" that they are close to Nene (keep in mind this was reported mid afternoon, and still no resolution for something that was "close").

Now, Nets officially deny report of tampering, in agreement with Dwight's statement. Magic releasing statement that no charges have been filed.

Basically, Magic (like the Nuggets) are trying to milk every single asset they can from Nets (as is their prerogative). Nets on the other hand are daring Magic...go ahead. Keep mucking around and we'll sign Nene but still have enough to bring in Dwight, but we won't take Hedo's contract off your books.

First one to blink wins? For all the talk of not letting it be like Melo, it may not be like Melo-drama, but it certainly sounds like a meloDwightma (i know, terrible).

This works two ways

Either your happy that tampering did take place because this assures that Howard wants to come to the nets

But

On if reports are false, then can this be a ploy by Howard or others to take the attention away from Howard going to the lakers, thus allowing CP3 trade to lakers. Then in the last minute the lakers trade for Howard when everyone "believed" that his so called preferred destination was Nets.

Now reports are that the Lakers are restructuring the deal where they somehow absorb more salary. A probable choice may be receiving Scola. Would the magic trade Howard before the deadline for Bynum and Scola?
