Report: Howard Prefers To Sign With Nets Outright In Summer

Post#1 » by professorMAINE » Thu Mar 1, 2012 1:09 pm

The reportedly preference for Dwight Howard is to sign with the Nets in the offseason as a free agent, which would allow the franchise to retain the assets they do have.

Howard is enthused about teaming up with Deron Williams and he could likely receive a more lucrative adidas extension in Brooklyn.

The Magic haven't given up on keeping Howard and are interested in a trade for either Steve Nash or Monta Ellis, but both possibilities are remote.

What I got out if it was, Dwight would rather sign with the Nets in the summer so they don't have to trade guys like Lopez, Hump, etc in a deal for him. That way when he comes we can resign those guys and have a good group of guys who are already established with the team. I like it.

Now we can focus on getting some other talent to trade for Lopez (or other players we have) if this information is true and Howard has let the Nets FO know this (if legally can?)

Yea, I hope this is true and it got back to somebody in the front office, from Dwight's mouth

I almost wish reports like this wouldn't come out cause it probably forces the Magic to deal Dwight somewhere else just cause they know he won't stay with them. Dwight needs to say something like "We have a chance to win it all this year" and play out the year in Orlando. THEN bail on them, haha!

But if he tells them hes not signing anywhere else then, then we still get him either way but i prefer through off season

I believe it as well, i think the magic are posturing big time and Billy King might be calling their bluff with the proposed move for Beasley. By trading two of Farmar, Shawne Williams and Petro (lets say Petro and Farmar) we'd be basically ready for max cap room for Howard while keeping Lopez. We'd probably have to move the Houston pick with those two but it might be worth it at the deadline.

Anyway thought its interesting were talking with teams in regards trades of our small multi year contracted players to make sure we have the cap. Looks like King is preparing to call the Magics bluff and let them keep Howard past the deadline.

King has played this very well so far, hopefully he can keep doing the right thing here and lands us Howard in the end.

Yup! The Magic FO is not that foolish to let him walk w/o compensation.

If there's one single good thing about the article, it gives us a minor leverage when dealing our trade chips to Orlando... :D

The only thing I question, and this might be my pessimistic attitude toward the team, is if another team would be willing to gamble and rent Howard. For example, if the Lakers were to "rent" him and god forbids they make it to the Finals or some how wins it all, are we screwed like Drywall? :-?

I think the longer Dwight isnt a Net, the worse it is for us. Remember, hes enticed to team up with Deron Williams. If the summer comes and they both opt out of their contracts then they can essentially sign anywhere. I still think the Nets have the best chance out of Dallas and LA because they have the allure of a new arena, new location, big city market, etc. But Id feel alot better knowing that Dwight is already a Net before the season ends.

If Dwight is traded to another team, he could still very well come to the Nets during the offseason. But, I dont think anyone will give a better package than the Nets if it is just a rental from the other teams stand point.

Of course, especially at this point

If I'm Dwight I'd rather have the roster flexibility to recruit my friends than $3.5M over 4 years.

Atlanta fans were all over a Lopez/smith deal. Maybe there's something there via a S&T, or Lopez takes his QO.

Except if you give up picks and take a bad contract you're essentially showing him the best your roster can offer in a mediocre 20 game run

LA has no cap space to sign Dwight outright. Dallas will have to make a draft day trade that sends Marion for pure cap space to have a shot (while still not giving close either's first year true max).

Yup.

I mean I highly doubt he would change his mind and go elsewhere, but you're telling him, "Hey, this roster plus the MMLE, plus whatever players like Stephen Jackson get amnestied that we can get here, plus whatever overpriced player we can get for Petro and Shawne's expirings is your team. But all those pluses come down to, our core is you, Deron and whatever scraps we can gather together, we'll have zero depth, oh and Morrow. So you better hope Bogdanovic is the second coming of Drazen!"

Hey one thing to think at this point though, is maybe... maybe, maybe, maybe... and I'm going to get flamed as a homer for this, but... we don't include Brook...
