Time to roll with the punches

Look we can complain and moan all day about the Gerald Wallace deal but it's time to roll with the punches and develop a plan of attack of still improving. I refuse to dwell on a situation we can no longer control.

What we need to do is look forward and see what we can do.

Toronto wants proven talent and have the #8 pick to offer

Rockets need a big man

Magic want to retool fast and not in love with the idea of Brook

Let's come up with a way we can send Brook to Houston, a combo of guys from any of the teams to Toronto, Toronto's #8 pick along with some picks of our own and a player or two from any of the teams enough so we end up with Dwight?

I'm at work, but the thought just came to me that something could be done with these 4 teams.

Help me out. Let's make it happen.

This is what I said in the Off-season thread.

Send Lopez to POR (Houston won't have cap space to acquire him)
POR gives us back our #6 pick to send to Magic.

You can't really come up with anything until June 13. If Gerald Wallace picks up his option, then you can figure out ways to improve the team. If not, then it literally all depends on free agency.

Well you're correct on one hand, but on the other there are possibilities.

The deal couldn't be discussed at the draft and so you can't draft for another team, but you can still trade the player you actually drafted for Lopez if Lopez, Portland and the other teams were interested.

It wouldn't be a premeditated deal, it might just be a deal that arises on July 1st.

Most of these deals are discussed as though they'd be discussed on completed on draft day. That's my contention with ideas and why I think they're so fictional.

Now sure, a team could just pick players they like, then if some deal during the course of FA comes up and one of the previously selected players is involved, that's a somewhat likely scenario. But again, the player needing to be S&T'd needs to be willing to goto the team that he'd be sent to in the trade. Very rarely is a FA willing to just go along with what the team wants him to do. So even then, it's not highly likely, but it's at least in the realm of possibility.

People are just so quick to overlook the fact that the FA player has a TON of leverage in deals that require a S&T. That's why when S&T's do happen, it's usually the player wanting to go there and the teams accommodating the player, not the other way around which is how it's so often portrayed on RealGM.

And all of this doesn't change the fact that Portland would have zero interest in trading any of their picks or players they select with said picks for Lopez.

I really like Portland as a franchise and feel like their fans have been through a lot with two studs basically breaking down in front of their eyes.

But from a completely objective perspective, Portland should offer the Nets the 6th pick for Lopez because in my eyes Lopez is worth far more than the sort of player that would be picked around 6 (Drummond, Barnes, Sullinger etc).

They would be a very very very good team next year if it was a Lopez for the 6th pick deal and using their 2nd lotto pick on Damian Lillard or Kendall Marshall (I prefer Marshall)

Marshall
Crawford / Matthews
Batum
Aldridge
Lopez

That is a great line up with youth on their side and room to grow with Paul Allen willing to spend to win they would be a big team in the West.

I don't see what the 6th pick would do for us in a trade to Orlando without Lopez to go in a trade for Howard but from a Portland perspective that would be a good solid trade. They would just have to do a big time physical on Lopez, who I believe will be fine in the long run, just like his bro and Gasol who had the exact same injuries.

Thats a potential line up for Portland, that I would dream to have on the Nets right now, so much potential.

I love the way the Jazz and Portland are ran by their front office. There's no messing around and they understand that you contend or pick up assets. They are the teams I play with on 2k12 franchise mode (Jazz) to use all the assets at their disposal to make moves and improve the team. They don't gamble a high lotto pick. Looking back, every if we keep Williams, we should've kept building with Favors and tanking for high picks. Then look to make a move this summer or the trade deadline in March as we move to Brooklyn. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and obviously this is just looking back at things that we shouldn't have done but even if Williams re-signs, we're looking at best a Hawks level 2nd round at best franchise until we blow it up and start again 5 years down the line.

King messed up badly and should be fired in all honesty

I totally disagree. I think Lopez and Aldridge are a terrible pairing. The Blazers would get out-rebounded on a nightly basis and it puts a ton of defensive pressure on Aldridge.

Drummond could turn out to be the next Kwame Brown (something that's totally in the realm of possibility), and I'd still be happier with the decision to take a chance on him over trading him (or any other potential player at 6) for what Lopez already is. In case you can't already tell, I'm not a fan of Lopez, so there's no way you're going to convince me that the Blazers should trade the #6 (or whatever player that turns out to be) to the Nets for Lopez.

Brook Lopez blocks an adequate number of shots and alters even more around the basket... This notion that he's an Eddy Curry level defender needs to be dropped.

Guy can't guard a pick and roll to save his life, but it also doesn't help that since he's been here no one on this team has been able to keep players out of the lane, and it's been one incompetent coach after the other...

...You want Kwame Brown with the number 6 pick? Because that's basically what you're saying.

Good grief. You're a good poster, and in the words of the Nets former announcer...

The funny part is Lopez is VERY similar stylistically to LMA.

Are people really surprised that Lopez isn't a fan favorite? Most of realgm just look at box scores and make assumptions. I decided a long time ago that talking about Lopez on the General Board or anywhere else on this forum is huge waste of time.

The only way I trade Lopez for the 6th pick is if it guarantees us Dwight Howard later on...

Too bad that doesnt even tell half the story. Aldridge is a much better defender, has a much more polished offensive game and is a slight better rebound (only by a hair though). Trying to say that they're similar players because they have simila stats is a very simplistic was of comparison. It's like saying Lowry and Rondo are the same because they have similar stats.

And fwiw, I'm not solely judging Lopez on box scores, I'm judging him on the games I've seen him in.

Also, I do understand the risks with Drummond. He can be anywhere from the next Kwame to the next Bynum and anywhere in between. He's a high risk/high reward player. I'm willing to take the gamble at 6, probably moreso this year since the #6 ends up being a luxury pick. Were the 6 the Blazers only pick, I may not be so willing to take the gamble on Drummond. I'd still take my chances with whoever the Blazers draft at 6 over Lopez though. I'm just not a fan of his, so don't take it personal Net fans. If you guys like him and are happy with him, great, its just my opinion and I'm just one person.

Lopez career TS%: .560
Aldridge caeer TS%: .538

Lopez Career TRB%: 12.9
Aldridge Career TRB%: 13.1

Lopez Career Drtg: 109 (And he's played with TERRIBLE defensive teams throughout his career, yet it's only 2 points higher)
Aldridge Career Drtg: 107

I'm not even suggesting that Lopez and Aldridge are close, but let's not talk as if we're comparing Dirk, 2011 playoffs edition with Bargnani.

Duster, I think you're missing the point.

VC4P is the biggest proponent of LMA on this board.

He just said that they were similar stylistically, not statistically. And I'm sure he meant offensively, cuz most of us, including VC, have talked about how poor Lopez defense is.

Do we waive everybody's Cap Hold except for Deron?

I don't know what you mean by this.

I assume you're mean "do we need to waive everybody's cap hold except for Deron in order to get Dwight".

The answer to that is 'you can't do that'.

If you eliminate the cap hold, you lose bird rights for the player. If you waive Lopez cap hold, we lose his bird rights and he's free to sign with anyone without us having the ability to match. Therefore, an S&T is not possible.
