Avery on the hot seat; Billy King addresses the team

Brian Geltzeiler ‏@hoopscritic
Source tells me this morning that Nets brass is seriously considering pulling the plug on Avery Johnson if things don’t turn soon

Brian Geltzeiler ‏@hoopscritic
To clarify this Avery thing….he has allies in the organization but there are a few higher ups who want him gone now….

Rod Boone ‏@rodboone
Avery said Billy King addressed the team before practice here in Jersey today. Didn’t get into specifics, though.

Rod Boone ‏@rodboone
Avery said he knew when he took job that either: “One, I’m going to get fired. Two, I’m going to resign. Three, I’m going to get re-signed.”

Rod Boone ‏@rodboone
Avery: “Until ownership tells me something otherwise, I’m going to continue to do my job.” #Nets

And the quote that should officially get him fired:

Rod Boone ‏@rodboone
Avery: “We had a pretty good November and I was coach of the month. Then we lose a game, then I’m a terrible coach.” #Nets

This is the one that gets my attention. This is the stuff coaches always say right before they get fired, when they have been told by the powers that be within the organization that they're as good as gone if they don't do a complete 180 ASAP.

If they fire him, does garbage ass PJ take over though?

I'd pull for Elie the strongest.

Avery is such a self-apologist, it's sickening.

He points to his Coach of the Month as proof that he's a great coach. Really? You really think you were the best coach in the league during that month? You really think the team was winning games because of brilliant coaching? You really think you're not to blame for going 2-8 in December?

Everything is an excuse, and a "well, it could have worked out" argument. After every loss, he blames the team, and not himself. It's just gross.

I LOVE that him getting fired is legit discussion among the Nets organization now. Fire him, Elie as interim coach, and then get SVG.

I agree. It's pretty disgusting.

Everyone talks about how much D-Will blames everyone else and yet he's been more apologetic and honest about his overall crap play than Avery has been about his horrific coaching.

Every game it's "we gotta make shots".

No, really?

Every team needs to make shots, but there are plenty of things you can do to still win games when you're not making shots. Stop with the excuses...it's time to go.

I honestly believe that if we lose to the Sixers on Sunday, who are still without Bynum and possibly Jrue Holiday after 3 days of rest and practice, and the following game, Avery will be fired.

Will they wait til after Christmas?

I say fire him right after the game vs Boston no matter the result, give the players and fans a gift that money can't buy!

I'm trying to remember....there was a coach who wasn't doing so well heading into the Christmas/New Years season, so I'm pretty sure they fired him before Christmas so that he wouldn't be unduly worried about his job throughout Christmas.

I'm like at least he would've had a job through Christmas and his kids wouldn't have to spend their entire winter break with Dad

I think it was Reggie Theus in '08: http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0 ... 47,00.html

Really "then we lose a game and I'm a bad coach" wow. how about when you then go 2 and 8 in Dec.

It's all about adjustments and his lack of ability to make any. What works for the start of the season doesn't always mean it will work the whole season. Teams make adjustments to what other teams do offensively and defensively. The other teams adjusted to the nets plays (not too hard since they don't run many) and the nets didn't make adjustments themselves. we will see what happens in the next few games.

I totally agree. The excuses of they need to make their open shots is driving me crazy. Yes the nets miss open shots and yes it's probably more than they should but you have to look at when and how they are getting those shots. Most of the open shots come rushed at the end of failed plays and when the clock is running down because it takes them so damn long to get the play going. Every time they run a play I as the fan know exactly who the play is for and where the ball is going. If I can spot it immediately don't they think the rest of the league can too. It takes them at least 10 seconds to get the ball to the primary target on the play, most of the time it takes a lot longer. when they get the ball in the post to lopez he usually has like 10 seconds to make his move. they need to do it quicker.

And it's not just the 2-8 record that is damning...it's the nature of these losses. We're barely scraping by terrible teams, at home. We're losing at home to any team that's at least average. We're blowing double digit leads on a consistent basis, ESPECIALLY in the 2nd half. This wouldn't be happening under a competent coach, because even though our players have disappointed, they haven't played nearly as bad to warrant this.

The last quote is hilarious. I think Avery has a future in stand up comedy. This current job is just practice for him.

When we fire Avery, should've been the day after the Knicks game, I want Proky to go hard after Phil Jackson.

We need a big name coach to show these players who's running the show now.

If we were able to convince Phil to join us it would be huge news around the league.

Like I said in another thread, with the CBA restrictions on money to spend a season ($3m), the coaching set up is somewhere we could flash our muscle money wise.

Proky could give Phil whatever he wants to coach Brooklyn. It would be brilliant to have a coach capable of drawing up plays out of timeouts, I've actually forgot what that was like.....

No. I just made it. After thibs proved himself as a top coach and ours is about to be fired I'm wondering why they hired him

The Raptors and Magic are closing in on surpassing our win totals. We have 12 wins and Toronto has 9 wins now...He better be fired after a loss to Philly. That's disgraceful.

He has the nerve to make such a stupid ignorant and straight up ego comment like that. You're a terrible coach because you have failed to find a formula that works for our talent, not for yourself. We've been struggling to adjust for the last 14 games.

We barley beat Toronto, we needed a game winner to beat Detroit, we played no defense against the Warriors, we let the Bucks clown us at home until fans booed.

But hey, Avery says it's only 24 games and now he thinks it's only because of ONE game.

Next few games are win-win.

If we win, then cool we won.

If we lose, the cool Avery's gone.

You know what Woodson said after the Knicks' loss today?

"Terrible coaching"

He's not an elite coach, but Woodson takes accountability, even for a game I don't think he was all that accountable for. He doesn't say "Well, these guys are not responding to the pressure" or "they're not making their wide open shots" or "they didn't come out with the proper effort tonight"...all of these are excuses Avery spams ad nauseam.
