CJ Watson to opt out

C.J. Watson will opt out of the final year of his contract with the Brooklyn Nets, thereby becoming an unrestricted free agent on July 1, a league source confirmed.
Watson signed a two-year contract with a player option for the second year before the 2012-13 season.
In terms of free agent contracts, the Nets are limited to the veteran’s minimum because they are over the salary cap.

Dunno how I feel about this. I do like him, and think he is a serviceable and good backup PG for deron williams, playing very limited minutes and a good 3pt shooter as well.
If not, gives us a chance to develop Tyshawn Taylor and mold him into a future backup PG, so I can see how this is both good and bad.

My observation of developing back up PG's is that it rarely pans out. If you are in playoff mode..I always prefer a veteran guy. I have zero expectations that Taylor will ever do anything in this league. Hope I am wrong...but I am not happy to lose CJ Watson.

Yeah, I know others believe Taylor will get better but I just don't see it.
There are several fundamental issues with his game especially as a PG (i.e. lack of passing ability, court vision, shooting, erratic/careless with the ball) that I believe will be too hard to overcome. Unless he goes to a team where he can develop and they can afford to play through his mistakes, I don't think he'll really be a serviceable or dependable backup PG anytime soon.

Yea, while Taylor definitely possesses some great physical attributes (good athleticism, great size), I think it's highly unlikely that he makes it with this team. Like you said, he's too erratic with the ball, not a good decision maker and his offensive skillset is still raw at his age. Most importantly, he seems to be rather immature and that is perhaps the biggest problem.

See ya, CJ. I liked you alot until....
Available backup PGs:
-Daniel Gibson
-Nate Robinson
-Will Bynum
-Sebastian Telfair (homecoming?)
-Jamaal Tinsley
-A.J. Price
-Shaun Livingston
-Jose Calderon (long shot)
-Mike James
-Keyon Dooling (lol)

Cross Nate off the list. He is going to get more than the vets minimum which is what we have to offer.
Calderon? NO SHOT.
The rest of that list is disgusting. Losing CJ is going to hurt us.

You know, assuming we can even trade HBAP this summer rather than the more likely than at the trade deadline 9 months from now...getting a veteran throw in PG is a better option than any of the realistic names on that list.

And one other...what about Chauncey Billups? I like that move if he is healthy.

Yea I agree unless we draft a PG who is able to contribute immediately.

fine with giving tt a shot, dont want a **** vet, id rather watch tyshawn sink or swim. he defends his position, he has size and athleticism, and my opinion of his spot shooting is a bit higher than most here it seems. might have a future, might not, but i think hes a worth a shot. very much doubt a rookie 2nd rounder would beat him out next season, but im def fine with giving kidd another pg prospect as well.

CJ Watson didn't play all that well last season...Sure as a vet. min. backup SG (He's no PG IMO) he was a bargain but I'm pretty sure we can find an adequate replacement for him.
We also have to give minutes to Tyshawn Taylor who is already 23 years old and not getting any younger.
I always wondered why the Bulls let him go for nothing and I think I now know why.

I agree with this.
im not really high on taylor short term at all. he has a long way to come before playing backup PG minutes. CJ was also one of our best and only outside shooters. he was playing like more of a 2 gaurd here. hopefully we can sign a veteran PG or maybe get one thrown in to whatever deal we do with humphries

you doubt a 2nd rounder could beat out another 2nd rounder???
sink or swim isnt what you want with a team built to try and make noise in the playoffs now

I saw this a few days ago:
Chauncey Billups is an unrestricted free agent and wants another NBA Finals ring. He told Fox Sports Florida that he would not mind taking less money to join the Miami Heat for this upcoming season.
Billups, 36, was in Miami on Sunday to receive the NBA’s inaugural Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award. He struggled with a torn Achilles tendon the last two seasons and missed 38 of the Clippers’ first 41 games this past year. Despite the injury, Billups said he has no plan on retiring.
From Fox Sports Florida:
The Heat went after Billups after he was released in December 2011 as part of the NBA’s amnesty provision. However, the Los Angeles Clippers won the bidding process, and he has played with them the past two seasons.
But Billups, 36, said he will look at all options this summer. He was asked if the Clippers have any sort of inside track to re-sign him. “I’m wide open,’’ Billups said. “Free agent means free.’’

So yeah...the rich could very well be getting richer yet again.

this hypothetical 2nd rounder will not come into camp with a year of NBA experience, an offseason of NBA training, and will almost certainly be at a disadvantage to taylor in terms of physical and athletic profile. im not inclined to make foolish, sweeping, hyperbolic claims regarding both individual players and teams, and to be consistently, often flagrantly, proven wrong, but, yes, my money would be on taylor to beat out a rookie.

billups has been horrible for a while now. abysmal defender that will not stop chucking threes. he would not play over chalmers or cole.

Taylor was a mid second rounder without much talent. and he doesnt really have much NBA experience. id certainly see it possible for a 2nd rounder with some talent, especially if its someone we get at 31 or 33 if we are able to buy a pick from the cavs, being able to beat him out without any experience...
I can certainly see Erick Green, Pierre JAckson, nate wolters, lorenzo brown all beating out taylor in camp with 0 experience as they are all superior in skill and other then jackson size as well

this is really stupid. taylor's 6'2.75 without shoes with a 6'6.25 wingspan. in his four year college career and his time on the floor last season, he demonstrated excellent vertical explosiveness and lateral quickness, none of which can be said for any of the players you listed. here are the relevant measurements:
taylor
6'2.75 height without shoes
6'6.25 wingspan
green
6'1.5
6' 5.75"
jackson
why bother
wolters
6'3.5
6'3.75
brown
6'4
6'7
all of them are mediocre prospects, none of them are overtly NBA athletes. taylor's similarly mediocre at this point, but he has a combination of size and athletic tools that none of these players possess. he has a year of NBA experience. he dominated the d-league. he showed flashes vs NBA players. am i saying he'll definitely have a better career than these players? of course not. is it POSSIBLE a rookie 2nd pg could beat him out? yes. is it likely? no, i dont think its at all likely.
think this discussion has run its course. were gonna sign a vet minner anyway
