From Russia with … nothing shady.
That was the finding of a “thorough” NBA investigation into the Nets’ summer signing of free agent forward Andrei Kirilenko, multiple league sources told The Post.
The league, after getting complaints from at least one other team that suggested improper agreements, examined the signing and found nothing against the rules. The league launched its investigation, questioning participants. Nets officials were summoned — at one point on a weekend, usually a time off in the summer for league execs.
“It was a very, very thorough investigation,” one source maintained. “They checked everything.”Marc Fleisher, Kirilenko’s agent, addressed only Kirilenko’s decision to join the Nets. He declined to acknowledge the investigation occurred.
“Basically, the offers and things we had from other teams were too difficult to make happen,” Fleisher said, referring to the necessity of a possible sign-and-trade or complicated deal.
In the end, the chance to play with a valid contender, even for considerably less money, was the final tipping point.

Anyone want to take a guess on who that one team is?

Lets see what happens next year...If AK has a very good year and next season still signs with the Nets, even if much better offers are out there, maybe something is up. But even then it would be hard to prove unless a smoking gun is found.
I still can't believe we nabbed Kirilenko and paid virtually nothing for him.

Yup, but that's the reality of being a premiere team in the NBA. People want to come play with you for both the exposure and the chance at winning. I think the Nets have clearly moved into that echelon now. If these next two seasons work out, we can stay there.

I am not even a Nets Fan but I found this to be extremely absurd. The owners reacting like this shows to me its sour grapes and there is a hint of prejudice against Russians(I am not Russian). Didn't Allen just take a 50% discount to play in Miami last year? I didn't read anyone clamoring to investigate Arison or Riley.
Given that Kirilenko is only 32, he has already made $100 million+ in salaries from NBA + untold millions in endorsements, it's not unfathomable that the wants to play for a contender. I heard he is the biggest NBA star in Russia.
Anyway, I am excited to watch this Nets team this season (not a Nets fan either)

We're like the bastard child of an incestuous relationship gone wrong of the NBA.
