What's the minimum for this season to be a success?

In your opinion.

For me, I think the team has to win at least 54 games and make the Conference Finals. And with no more than, say, one significant injury (as in Paul Pierce getting back spasms or something and missing 2-3 weeks). If we get hit by the injury bug any more then that or win 53 or less games for any reason, I'd say we're too fragile. If we don't make at least the Conference Finals then obviously we didn't succeed at the Win Now plan.

Also, I think we need at least 54 wins and to not be eliminated before Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals to cement the Nets as a premiere franchise in the league, which will matter hugely with free agents.

On the other hand, the upper-bound for the team is essentially the same season as the 2008 Celtics had, with 65+ wins and Dat Chip.

68 Wins and a NBA Championship. :D

Seriously, at this point, as long as I'm entertained and looking forward to watching Nets games (not like most of last year) I will be very happy.

We should be solid but who knows what may happen during the course of the season.

Worst case scenario would be to win 55-60 games and get bounced in the first round. If we don't make the playoffs it wouldn't be as bad IMO because that would mean something went very wrong.

Win 55+ games, get to the ECF, and lose to the Heat and the Heat only in a hard-fought 6-7 games.

This is a must in order to excuse the assets and the money put into this team:

-Win the Atlantic Division
-Win 55-60 games
-Get to the ECF
-Lose in 6-7 games
-If Miami doesn't make it to the ECF, get to the NBA finals and win it.

Anything less than that is a failure. The beauty of this team is, if in any situation that either D-Will, B-Lo, Pierce or KG are out for significant time we have enough guys to fill in and play hard. There is really no excuse not to get to the Conference Finals or NBA Finals (if Miami has an earlier exit) using the injury card. We assume Kidd will utilize the bench better than PJ and we obviously made massive upgrades. So, this is a zero excuse season across the board. From coaching, to injuries to players.

I'm not settling for anything less than a ECF appearance and hopefully beyond, injuries or not.

I pretty much agree.

The only acceptable loss should be to Miami in the East, or a competitive series in the Finals.

RS - the only things I think are imperative are:
-finisher higher than NY/win the Atlantic
-Home-court in at least round 1 (not sure if that is guaranteed by winning the Atlantic)

Division winners are not guaranteed a top-three seed, or even home-court advantage in the first round. For example: if the season ended on April 11, 2012, the Chicago Bulls (44-14), Miami Heat (40-16) and Boston Celtics (34-24) would be champions of the Central, Southeast and Atlantic divisions, respectively. The Bulls have the East's top overall record and would be top seed, Miami would be second. But the Indiana Pacers (36-22) have a better record than the Celtics, so they'd be seeded third and Boston fourth.

-Win the atlantic: if we dont it would be a monumental catastrophic failure in my eyes
-win minimum 3 games of 4 vs the knicks
-beat anyone not name the miami heat in the playoffs

We should be targeting at least the ECF spot. Our aim should be to avoid the heat until the ECF so we would need to finish 1st or 2nd I believe in the East standings.

It's going to be a long hard season, fingers crossed we get lucky with injuries.

Anything can happen

Best:

-Hawks
-Wizards

Worst:

-Bulls

You don't think the Pistons with Jennings, Caldwell-Pope, J Smoove, Monroe & Drummond will make the playoffs?

I think Detroit could finish as high as 5th in the East and give the Knicks a run for their money in the 3rd tier of teams in the East.

1st tier: Heat
2nd tier: Nets, Pacers, Bulls
3rd tier: Knicks, Pistons, Hawks, Cavs, Wizards

Coming from a non-Nets fan...

It's title or bust right? Teams don't give up 3 picks and a swap for another playoff round. They do it to win a title. Not worth having the highest payroll for the same results as other teams paying out half as much while keeping their picks.

And as a Knicks fan, I've experienced this kind of high payroll/little results thing a lot. A LOT.

we didnt give up anything. the assets we gave up were trash outside of humps expiring. payroll is irrelevant, we will be over the tax every single season proky is owner. We will likely have picks those year HIGHER then the ones we gave up by purchasing picks. those picks will likely be very late picks.

this teams success depends on who we play and when. if we get miami early, we lose early. if we get them late, we lose late, if someone knocks them off for us, we get to the finals

I'd say you're in the Indiana/Chicago category. It's by no means assured you get to the finals if Miami loses early. Payroll is relevant with the effect it has on a team's ability to sign guys unless you're going to count on a KG/PP deal coming along every year. (This all, assuming, just for the sake of argument, that you DON'T win the title in which case all this is moot).

Do teams purchase early/middle first rounders that often at this point? Value rookie deals > cash in hand for most franchises. Also, it's not assured that you get a late pick in 2018. Nets, just like any team in the league, could very well be a lottery team by then. Do i doubt it with Prok as the owner? Yes. But it's possible.

We need to come close enough that Proky will feel that he is on the right track and continue his current philosophy. If this season is a total flop he will be a lot less willing to spend on building a contender. I can live with us not winning the title this year if I feel that ownership will continue to put it all out for the sake of winning it all.

Or he'll just fire Billy King (which is a much better option IMO).
