Nets Sign Jason Collins To 10-Day Contract

The Brooklyn Nets worked out Jason Collins this week in Los Angeles and are giving strong consideration to signing the free-agent center to a 10-day contract that would position him to become NBA's first active openly gay player, ESPN.com has learned.
Sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com that the Nets, after letting Thursday's trade deadline pass without a deal for the Los Angeles Lakers' Jordan Hill, are weighing the addition of another big man and have identified Collins as a prime candidate to join their frontcourt rotation via the 10-day route.
No final decision has been made, but sources said the 35-year-old was auditioned by the team in a private workout earlier this week to assess the state of his game after last playing with Washington almost a year ago.
Seriously? He's worse than Evans at this stage of his career and provides nothing but a distraction.

I called this earlier. seems like a good idea. and what does it matter who he is better or worse then he isnt going to play this is a PR/statement thing, not a basketball move.

Collins is a good character guy, but this feels like a Yormarket move.
Our big weakness is our ability to rebound. So you bring in an older, slower Collins who Kidd outrebounded on a nightly basis when they were players with us?
Makes no basketball sense, but it keeps our name in the headlines.
If there was an award for marketing and getting people to talk about you (regardless it'd it's good or bad press), we'd win it.

come on, this ain't no plan!!! this is a straight up publicity stunt. Jason Collins does not contribute on the floor for a contending or competitive team... lockerroom guy, sure perhaps a good choice but we need someone to work on the floor, not the bench..
just more stupidity by King if he goes this route.

You know, you'd imagine in the middle of such a failure to meet expectations of a season, but when things are starting to pickup in the right direction for the most part, that they wouldn't bring in such a huge distraction and possible locker room divide.
You can't tell me all the other 13 players in this locker room are cool with a gay guy all up in the showers with them, let alone even the simple stuff of having to answer questions from reporters every night about being teammates with him, especially on the road.
This is yet another in the long line of PR stunts, Yormarket can go fornicate himself with a metal stick.
If Collins was actually good, an actual contributing player with some skills, athleticism and worth on the court, I'd be more about this move, but this is absolutely 110% pure marketing crap.

If the above was a scenario for collins, he wouldn't be a FA to begin with....
complete PR move.... lack of basketball consideration, full throttle HEY PUT US ON ESPN!!!!

I go to work for a couple of hours and come back to this sh*t.
This screams exploitation.
WTF was the thought process?
FO Yesterday: Good we got Thornton, now lets go get Hill
FO Today: Instead of trying to make a smart basketball decision that would make us better for a playoff run lets try and steal the back page and draw attention to the team for all of the wrong reasons.
I thought intentionally spilling soda was the low point of the season. Guess not.

Agree with the rest of you on this being a pure publicity stunt. Twin hasn't been mediocre for quite some time, let alone someone who can contribute to a team on the court. The most this will get is a cheer from the crowds when he checks in for a minute into the game.

Capitalism at it's finest. Jason Collins is gay how can we make money off of it?
I thought we were on a road trip because of the circus being in town but apparently they took it with them.

Nets want him because he got to sit with the Obama's during the state of the union.
Someone should let the Nets brain trust know that you also get to met the president if you win a championship.

Personally I don't want Collins. I feel that it's more of a front paper/ business type of move.
