Prokhorov, who bought a controlling stake in the Nets in 2010, has quietly indicated he will keep his payroll under the luxury-tax threshold starting in the 2015-16 season, one source with direct knowledge of the auction said. “It will take a year to get to the salary cap,” the source said.

The loss-making Nets are projecting they will swing to more than a $50 million profit in the 2016-17 season.

Brooklyn currently gets a relatively puny $20 million a year from its local TV deal with the YES Network, sources said, but that is due to be reset to about $50 million beginning in 2017.

In the 2015/16 season, the Nets have the 3 guaranteed contracts of JJ, Deron and Lopez on the books for a total of $62.7 million.

How can we become players next summer when we are hamstrung with Johnson, Lopez,. and Williams' deals?

The Nets have three of the NBA's worst contracts on their books. Unless something drastic happens we will be unable to do squat next summer just like right now.

The Nets have three of the NBA's worst contracts on their books. Unless something drastic happens we will be unable to do squat next summer just like right now.

Should this not come as a hint that by next season, either one of those three can and may be traded? johnson will have one year as will Lopez so either of them may be flexible for say second round picks or even late first rounders. Anything to get us under the tax threshold to enable us to take back sign and traded players.

It depends but the magic number to avoid the luxury tax this season is 77 million. D-Will, Joe, Brook, Plumlee, Teague all total to 62 million on our cap. We will simply have to let Pierce, KG, Kirilenko, Livingston (if he returns) and possibly Mirza all walk for this to happen.

We could have gotten under the tax this season by letting Garnett retire, not retaining Pierce and trading Brook for crumbs. So, if it could be done then, it can be done next summer.

With Carmelo opting out, LeBron opting out and of course Love wanting out and most likely getting traded this summer, our options next year will be a lot more limited. 2016 is pretty much a priority at this point for this Nets team and at that point, we will be real players in Free Agency so long as we have a clean slate and cap. LeBron having the Nets as one of his 5 destinations is definitely a good sign although it'll be EXTREMELY unlikely to attain him this year or even next year. You have to essentially get rid of two of JJ/Brook/DWill to have even a REMOTE chance at attaining him. How? Sign and Trade and this should be the first line the team crosses. Not having flexibility SUCKS when it's the right time to join in on the free agent market.

Creating flexibility next season is extremely important for that very reason.

Afflalo, Jordan, Gasol, Love, Dragic, Irving, J. Butler, Rondo, Jefferson, Millsap. You land any one of those players and you immediately separate yourself from the rest of the pack in terms of location, money and now teammates/roster attractablity for Durant or any free agent in 2016.

we need to move lopez. plain and simple. he wont be here beyond 2015 anyway as we arent going to give him an extension.

move him now for cap room + a pick.

The obvious target would be Love.

King's moves have made it very hard for us to become a player. Maybe if the Wolves wait til the deadline to move him we can become a player if Lopez is healthy at that time and playing efficiently.

I highly doubt we get that lucky. HIGHLY.
