Media Day & Training Camp Thread

The off-season is over. Monday is Media Day and Tuesday is Day 1 of Training Camp at Duke University.

Hollins on the status of the PG position:

“Right now we’re just trying to build our group, build what we’re going to do and how we’re going to play,” Hollins said Thursday. “If (Jack) fits into that with the rest of the group then he’ll be the starter.

“If not, somebody else fits better, then (that guy will) be the starter, and we won’t even have to deal with what Jarrett has to do.”

Hollins on Brook shooting threes this season:

“He’s been working on them, so it may be some times we might let him be out there (shooting),” Hollins said.

Hollins and Billy King on Brook becoming a leader.

“It’s not just going out there with that ‘Rah, rah! You do this and I’ll do that,'” Hollins said. “It’s ‘go do your job.’ If you go do your job, then you can turn around and hold somebody else accountable to do their job on the same level of intensity and consistency that you are. And then after that you build a group of leaders."

Nets GM Billy King agreed. “We want you to be more vocal,” King said “You don’t have to be rah-rah and jumping around waving towels. But I need you to push this group and help guide it where you want it to go.’ I said, ‘You’ve been here for a long time, but now, if you’re going to come back, you’ve got to put your stamp on it a little bit.’ And I think he’s accepted that.”

Billy on Andrea B:

"I thought he played really well this summer. He shot extremely well. The night he injured his calf, I talked to him that night and the next morning and he said it seemed much better the next day and he got back on the court. I was in contact with him throughout the summer as well as Bojan.

"We’re not looking backwards with him, we’re looking forward. That’s something we told him when we reached out and tried to get him to come here, is you can have a fresh start. We’re not looking at anything you did in Toronto, anything you did in the Knicks. We’re looking at you to come in and be a part of the team. Give us the shooting we know you can hit. Give us the toughness. Don’t worry about living up to anybody else’s expectations but yours."

Billy on Chris McCullough:

"He’s on the court, he’s doing some stuff, rehabbing," said King. He’s on the court shooting with (Director of Physical Therapy) Lloyd (Beckett) and his team, doing physical therapy. We’ll give a timetable on exactly where we think he’ll be after [the first] preseason game.

"We’ll sit down with him and his agent and everybody and really just walk through it," King added, referring to the contest with Fenerbahce Ulker on October 5. "He has a long career ahead of him, so we want to get him to the point where he’s strong in both legs, and when he comes back he’s ready to be playing for a long time. Not get him back on the court and have a setback."

Thaddeus Young has become the first Nets player to make the move to Brooklyn:

"I could’ve waited it out and played out the last year of my contract (and then opted out). But my wife (Shekinah) and kids, they love it here, so I would rather just get something worked out sooner than later, and I think the biggest thing was just getting my kids settled, because my son T.J. (age 5) is just starting school this year, so that was the main objective to just get him settled.

“My wife’s a firm believer in wanting to be settled and stay in one place, and so once she got here, she already had friends that would come up from Philadelphia since I was there for seven years, so it was just a good opportunity.”

"It's a good environment. We like to come down and walk on the piers and walk on the bridges and stuff like that. Plus, the practice facility is gonna be in Industrial City [in February] so that's gonna be probably 10-15 minutes away from here, and like I said, Barclays Center is right up the street."

Jarrett Jack on bringing together leadership and culture:

"We’re a part of this whole thing, from the moment it starts in the summer, preparing for this thing in the fall and taking it all the way into the marathon of an 82-game season. Going down there, showing those young guys support, to understand that they have us behind them is the foundation we’re trying to lay here."

"It’s about working hard first and foremost, having somebody, example-wise that they [the young players] can follow and when there are times that a vocal presence is necessary, being that too.

"You know, I’ve been in this League going on 11 years now, so I’ve seen things from all sides of the spectrum. Being able to help somebody personally or the team collectively is something that falls on me at this particular point and time."

Really excited to see how this team competes.

And Hollins confirms that we'll see the Lopez standing three pointer. Brook may be the first player I've ever seen that shoots jumpshots without actually jumping.

My football season is on the verge of ending soon...

BBall talk is coming back!

The PG battle is my most interesting interest. I like what Larkin could possibly do here and with the added speed, I can only hope for some positive results.

The next adjustment would be how Trob, Bargs, Ellington contribute this year. Do we sing their praise or grill them out of town?

Finally, what will be our final 14-15 man roster look like?

Hill isn't that good to me.

Hollins spoke about Dhantay Jones as if he was just more than a camp body. There could be some unexpected cuts. Speaking of Jones:

"I do feel this is a playoff team," Jones said. "Last season," he went on, "there were distractions that were there for various reasons. (Now), guys can get down and play basketball, find their own identity and not have to worry about different things that distracted them last year.

Apparently Jones is close to someone who was on last year's team who basically said there were "distractions".

Good riddance to that bastard.

Getting Karasev out of a Nets uniform would be a good start. :)

if dahntay jones at age 34 beats out karasev and quincy miller i dont know what to say about those two as prospects, both karasev and miller can be waived at end of training camp

Dhantay Jones:

"I do feel this is a playoff team," Jones said. "Last season, there were distractions that were there for various reasons. (Now), guys can get down and play basketball, find their own identity and not have to worry about different things that distracted them last year.

"These are things that are in the media in general and over the course of the season, you're going to have rifts, you're going to have different things that come up, but I think those guys were in a tough spot because of the personnel on the team and guys who may or may not wanted to be here. Different things that don't have to go on throughout the course of a season," Jones notes when speaking about this season.

"You have a different group of guys now. You have a young core who are very willing and eager to succeed and have found a nice foundation. These guys are committed to this whole team and not worried about anything else, just worried about the season,".

"That team had a lot of different things going. I had personal friends on that team last year and they were going through some ups and downs. This is a totally different unit, a totally different dynamic. The roles will be more settled into and the guys know where they stand and they'll work harder and be able to achieve great things this year."

Shane Larkin:

"I was going to palm a ball and put it on Instagram for him, but I felt like that wasn’t the right move," Larkin said. "I never met a man so concerned with another man’s hands, but it’s all good."

Based on that "starting line up" picture from today, with Jack/Joe/Thad/Bargs/Lopez

It makes it seem that our ten man rotation would be:

Jack/Larkin(Sloan/Jones)
Joe/Bogs
Thad/RHJ
Bargs/TRob
Lopez/Reed

Which makes me worry about how similar our big men play in the second unit (and overall lack of shooting)

Thoughts?

It depends on what the coach wants but I'll take a swing
? @ point guard its up in the air
Ellington/Bogdanovich/Jones
Joe/RHJ
Thad/TRobins
Lopez/Bargnani

Hoping someone steps up in training camp out of the frontcourt players that arent guatanteed a spot. Go Nets!

I don't think that was the starting 5, those were the team's most notable players taking a picture with the coach. Bargnani and Lopez together sounds like a really bad idea.

I like this. its no secret that I despise when lopez takes long 2-pointers. it doesnt create space and its horribly inefficient and it takes our best offensive rebounder away from the basket....

but im ok with those long 2's turning into 3s. that actually does create space(if he can hit them) and it is a much more efficienct shot. he shoots long 2s at 39% for his career. even if he shot 3s under 30% it would be the same efficiency or better.

also, i like this comment from hollins:
If you go do your job, then you can turn around and hold somebody else accountable to do their job on the same level of intensity and consistency that you are.

consistency and intensity. he identified brooks issues to the T. those 2 things are holding brok back from being a start top 20 player. we have seen brook come out aggressive and beast people and try and tear the rim off. we have also seen him turtle and go a month looking like a pansy. if he consistently can give us 22/9 and consistently attack he may finally reach his ceiling. to me its less about leadership and more about getting the best brook lopez possible.

Its all about aggressiveness with Brook. When Brook has had bad games its due mostly to a lack of aggression. When he dominates, he is forceful around the rim and punishes opponents. Brook should average 24ppg this season no excuses.

yup, when brook is slowed or stopped, its usually because brook stopped himself.

we should get indications early on. does he come out game 1 gangbusters or is it more of the same brook? im tired of this team coming out flat. in big games, in must win games, in openers, at home.
