Sean Marks Performance thread: Take II

Post#1 » by NyCeEvO » Thu Sep 22, 2016 5:42 pm

After some internal discussion, this topic is being "re-opened".

A link to the previous thread can be found
here. Do not bring any arguments from that thread into this one. We are starting fresh.

This is a topic worthy of discussion, and it WILL be conducted in a mature fashion. ANY thread derailment or incessant praise or condemnation of Marks (who just completed hiring his staff only in August) will result in an instant suspension/ban.

If you're gonna force yourself to watch every game, you should probably stock up on Pepto Bismol.

Knowing that the Nets will be bad but also knowing that the foundation of the franchise has been completely changed is much better than being told we're just a "bridge year" away from being good again. That alone makes this season more palatable than any of the previous seasons in Brooklyn for which management and ownership tried to mask (or simply weren't smart enough to realize) how bad things actually were.

There's a slim chance I'll be able to sit through an entire 48 minutes of Nets basketball this season. I am fully expecting to flip from the Warriors game and see this when I tune into YES

His hands are tied.

It's really a difficult situation.

Results gonna come slow.

We actually have more talent to watch for compared to last season. Last season, we entered knowing our rotation consisted of journeymen and scrubs like Bargnani, Larkin, Sloan that were never going to amount to anything here. Our coach was still employing styles and playbooks from 1987.

We may not win a lot of games this season but I could see us winning 25-30 games with some signature wins sprinkled in under a fun style of a play. I'm fine with that as long as we see internal growth from last year.

Yup. Being bad with young developing players is 1000x better than being bad with underachieving "stars".

Nothing is more gut wrenching than woefully falling short of expectations, especially when you pay top dollars for your team. That's no longer the case for us.

I'm very happy with what he's done so far, and I think things are trending in the right direction. The entire organization has a new and improved feel, and should be fun to root for. I also think the Nets will do notably better than 20.5 wins this year.

I still get that feel that marks is trying to be too smart... and is going to be the romeo crenell or josh mcdaniels or bill obrien who looks great with the pats but looks unready once they are on their own.

Don't remind me of Josh McDaniels. He was an absolute disaster with the Broncos. Ugh...

i love that sean marks really cleaned house from billy king regime and looks overseas and d league since we dont have picks. kenny atkinson was a great signing. he did good job getting young guys with upside and a few vets. he was in a difficult situation considering nets have no first round picks. having no picks limit you in drafting quality players in lottery or using the pick as trade bait.

Watch the Nets substantially outperform that 20.5 over/under.

Isn't it nuts how Sean's first signing was Kilpatrick (also named Sean) has seemly embodied the literal things Marks told fans he was going to implement?

- D League standout
- 4 Year Collegiate Athlete
- Efficient scoring
- Efficient shooting
- High Character
- Getting healthier

Everything Marks wanted in our culture is embodied by his signings. From coach to staff to players.

I see why the Spurs called him a rising star. His GM transactions remain to be seen but his ability to build such a stable positive environment within 6 months is incredibly impressive.

In this first morning after our first glimpse of what a Spursian team in Brooklyn might look like, I came across an old article about what makes the Spurs team great....and it really seemed to be on point about the culture Marks/Atkinson are looking to bring to Nets. Looking forward to season.

"On the Spurs, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, and each part has become happily greater because he has been content to merely be a part of the whole. There are no divas on this team. They have no place here."

"For all the task-mastering Popovich does, he does so with a genuine concern for his players. They realize this, and it pays dividends. They want to play for him. They want to play for each other.

And, this is something absolutely cultivated by Popovich. As he reveals to Golliver.

Yes, we’re disciplined with what we do. But that’s not enough. Relationships with people are what it’s all about. You have to make players realize you care about them. And they have to care about each other and be interested in each other. Then they start to feel a responsibility toward each other. Then they want to do for each other.

And I have always thought it helps if you can make it fun, and one of the ways you do that is let them think you’re a little crazy, that you’re interested in things outside of basketball. ‘Are there weapons of mass destruction? Or aren’t there? What, don’t you read the papers?’ You have to give the message that the world is wider than a basketball court."

The last time the Nets were fun:

The man who employed that style of play which led to:

- 35-17 record without Lopez
- 18 straight home wins.
- 30 home wins at Barclays (new record)
- 1st round win
- Top 10 in 3pt %

For some reason couldn't be on the same page with Billy King. Yes, Jason Kidd might've been a douchebag but the mere fact he was trying to get us to where Atkinson is now getting us says a lot about our previous regime.

It's a little sad we are gushing over a style that 70% of our league has already begun implementing. The great thing here with Sean Marks is he clearly wants to build a culture that doesn't exclude himself or the next man.

A coach and GM that can't be legitimate partners usually end up allowing the inmates to run the asylum. I'm really rooting for Marks to continue to show us new forward thinking concepts and strategies.
