Worst trade ever: Looking back at Nets-Celtics deal from 2013
I know it's painful to revisit, but here's a new behind the scenes look at the 2013-14 season and the trade that continues to kick us in the balls. It would be fascinating if it wasn't so painful.

Don't remind us, this will haunt us for the next 10 plus years. Just praying they draft a bust.

that wasnt the worst trade even. the gerald wallace trade was so much worse. it isnt close.
the celtics trade was an overpay that looks bad in hindsight... but it really took an unprecedented fall from allstar to scrub back up from deron williams in his prime for that trade to look as bad as it does. if deron doesnt have that decline, which still no one can explain, then we end up giving them more guys like james young and rj hunter instead of fultz and brown.

“The arrogance in the room was that we were going to roll, we were going to win these next couple of years,” said a former Nets staff member who was in the draft room. “Maybe not the championship, but we were going to win the next couple of years and have sustainable success. We were going to keep signing free agents. We were always going to draft between 20 and 30. So if we’re going to swap with the Celtics, who gives a f--k? That definitely was the thought.”

There's also the really odd decision to stop spending money after the one year. If we keep pierce and make other FA moves the trade probably isn't that bad, and the picks we give up aren't that high. For a plan that requires that much commitment, reneging on that commitment is what really screws us.

i get what youre saying.. but even with KG and pierce leaving we still win 35-40 games a year if deron didnt go from all star to scrub overnight

Billy King is lucky that he was the GM for the Nets, a team that no one in this area cares about, instead of the Knicks. Someone legit might have tried to hurt him over this.

That whole regime had no plan b, but if I know the person who is commenting there (if it is the person I'm thinking of), and yeah, an arrogant sob in real life, too.

Re: Worst trade ever: Looking back at Nets-Celtics deal from 2013
Yea, this is absolutely spot on and the most overlooked part of the whole debacle. If ownership were arrogant and confident enough to give away their future for two declining vets, they should have at least stayed committed for a couple more years to the plan. We had a second round exit to Miami, to no one's surprise, and Prokhorov all of a sudden backed out of wanting to pay big money. Yes, that team wasn't going anywhere and was a 2nd round exit at best, but that was still better than suffering through the next few awful years.Mkdaman1818 wrote:Prokorov wrote:Mkdaman1818 wrote:I know it's painful to revisit, but here's a new behind the scenes look at the 2013-14 season and the trade that continues to kick us in the balls. Lol at this part of the article.
He was still in political positions at the time. He didn't become more hands on until Putin started to really get out of hand and he started selling off his Russian assets. Prok deserves the blame of letting his staff run the asylum but the reality is, he was as hands off as any owner could be and most GMs LOVE that because he did give them a real vote of confidence.
You'd be hard pressed to find a GM or President that wants an overbearing owner. Acting like Prokhorov not being around was the cause of it is pathetic. They should be happy he didn't fire them half way through the season like Avery.
I also love how they quietly ignore the damaging Wallace trade that originally put us in the position of wasting 1st round pick to unload the awful contract he was given back then.

yup.... anyone who thinks the boston trade was anywhere close to as bad as the wallace trade is off their rocker.
and there is no hindsight or circumstance to the wallace deal being awful. at the time of the deal people were calling it the worst trade ever. there was literally no upside and massive downside. lotto pick to rent a bench player on a team that should not have been making win now moves only to overpay him massively in the offseason anyhow?

Re: Worst trade ever: Looking back at Nets-Celtics deal from 2013
The Wallace trade is what got the ball rolling. King should have been fired for even suggesting that kind of deal. Wallace was on the decline, sitting bench and was a free agent. he essentially traded the 6th pick for the bird rights of a player that was here for a year, and then had to trade basically what now is the #1 pick in the 2017 draft just to get rid of his contract.
D-Will being a bag of garbage is one thing, but Billy King operated with no common sense what so ever.

Not only that... but he made a win now move for a team in the basement that should have been tanking for Anthony Davis. Hornets finished one spot below us and won the lotto. if wallace was responsible for 1 win that could have made the difference.
Wallace cost us the equivalent of the #6 pick and this years #1 pick.
two top 6 picks for 3 months of gerald wallace.

If Boston drafts 3 more James Young (bust) /Jaylen Brown (serviceable starter) types how bad will the trade really be in retrospect?
Obviously Brooklyn could've picked other folks and Brown is still developing but so far the hype of the trade has been overwritten based on what happened on paper vs results of the players involved.

I nearly punched through a sheetrock wall because of that Wallace trade. I was so pissed!

And it was widely known before free agency that King was going to overpay Wallace to justify giving up a pick for him.
Then we had to give up another first round pick to get rid of him.
The acquisition and jettisoning of Gerald Wallace would've probably cost any other GM their job. King should've been fired simply for suggesting that we should give up a lotto pick for a soon-to-be free agent.
And remember, this was before we figured out where we going to land in the draft so it could've been even worse!!!

The trade was designed to keep deron (somehow it always goes back to him)
Wallace even said it had they not traded for him he wouldn't have considered the nets
The worst trade the franchise ever made was the one they didn't make not getting melo not getting him was a snow ball effect
Hell to be honest the Lebron sweepstakes of 2010 when the nets got in the room did to hurt them
Also this trade is in no way shape or form the worst mistake in NBA history

Exactly
Robert traylor for Dirk was a far worse trade
Can we actually wait to see if one of these players is actually good
Because right now it's an argument that jaylen is better than caris
And if the Celtics use the pick to get Butler will they win anything in the foreseeable future
There's no point in even crying about the trade anymore
There's so many what ifs if the nets don't do the Celtics trade

Although, if there is any writer who would write a super-snarky article about the Nets, it's Bondy.
Jackie MacMullen wrote a more fair-balanced and accurate assessment and she's focused on Boston sports lol.
