[Pointer Report] Jeremy Lin & D'Angelo Russell = Wall/Beal 2.0?

Post#1 » by Lorenzomax7 » Wed Jun 21, 2017 1:05 pm

"POINTER" is the name for a series of reports which is developed by me. The goal is to evaluate the performances(actually I prefer Westbrook's neat word: executions) from the total of 33 starting point/combo guards in the regular season 2016-17. I am not a professional statistician by any mean but hey, I really loves the stats works and analyzing.

I want to share some of my works on the rankings and evaluations of PGs step by step. Please feel free to ask me any question. I will do my best to explain all my works, since developing this project has already cost me over 500 hours. See below, I also wrote out a glossary for you guys to realize and understand how they are being calculated in my model. Btw, the unified method to evaluate all the categories is Feature Re-scaling, which is really sample, you can see the detailed explanation here.

As we know D-Lo was just traded to the Nets(As a BrookLin fan, I MISS YOU BROOK!), and we really want to find out how they can co-exist with each other for the Nets' backcourt. Lin switching to the 2-spot and Russell becoming the point guard? Or Lin leading the way and D-Lo firing the gun?

IMO, they are not necessary perfect for each other but they can potentially be a poor-man version of that duo in Washington: Wall/Beal. The gap might get smaller if D-Lo makes a significant leap from last two years and Lin simply being (much) healthier.

Hope you guys will enjoy it and this series of report in the near future can be helpful! I am Lorenzo_Max on twitter.

Btw, here is my grade for this trade: C+, I am not very high on this trade tbh. Cuz I am a big fan of Brook even when he was a rookie here. I will miss him so much. But I also have some hopes on D-Lo, although I am not a fan of him at all, I think he could co-exist well with Jeremy Lin on the backcourt for a couple of years.

Practices can help young players can improve their jump shot and 3.
The Beal comparison is valid only if D-Lo improves his 3 to 40% (35% now)

I checked the penetration because it is more a nature gift and style.
I agree D-Lo weakness is his penetration that limits his shot creation and surprised what a good finisher Levert's is.

At the rim 2017:
Levert 67.6%, 39.7%Ast'd
Lin 54.2%, 30.8%Ast'd
SKP 58.2%, 48.7%Ast'd
Whitehead 52%, 35.3%Ast'd

Harden 66.9% 11%Ast'd

D-Lo 55.9% 43.7%Ast'd

Beal 62.9% 49.1%Ast'd
Wall 58.8% 18.8%Ast'd

Levert is a good defender, but his playmaking isn't good enough.
Still, IMO, Lin/Levert is better combo than Lin/D-Lo.
Not a fan of this trade.

LeVert will play the 3.

Neither Porter nor KCP would come here and they are gonna be matched and I think Marks knows that.

Can this be moved to the Lin thread?

We just made an awesome trade... do we really need to derail that conversation by comparing Lin to another superstar?

John Wall is an elite top 15 player and top 5 point gaurd and athletic freak. Lin is a solid player still trying to prove he is a starter and not a 6th man.

thats not a poor mans wall/beal, its homeless dying mans wall/beal

Lopez was expiring and we werent going to resign him. you typically dont get great value for a rental/salary dump. this might be the most value every given up in a salary sump. this trade is at worst an A+ and at best an A++++++

You are seriously overvaluing Wall and undervaluing Lin. Of course, not surprised at your comments at all. For the record, do you think Conley is a starter?

If I am the GM I will keep Brook for the rest of his career. You need a legend for the sake of your history although he didn't/won't bring you a ring. But Prokorov doesn't have that patience.

Did I say they are comparable right now? No. Did I say they might be closer than before? Yes.

People who thought the gap between Lin/Wall is bigger than D'Lo/Beal is out of their minds. Lin at worst could potentially be a Top 10 pick back in 2010 and a Top 7 pick in 2015 if he was born 5 years later in 1993.

Aren't they trying to become the Spurs of the East?

How about Parker/Ginobili? (Lin being one of the quickest in the game and DRuss modelling his game after Manu)

D'Lo would never ever be anything close to Manu... totally different players... very very different... just like Lin commented about between him and D'Lo.

John Wall just averaged 23 points, 11 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals on 23 PER and 55 TS% leading his team to 50 wins. but im overvaluing him?

Conley just averaged 21/6/4 shot 41% from three on 23 PER and an ungoldly 60TS% and started 676 of 706 games... what do you think?

What in the world are you talking about? born 5 years later? 1993?

it isnt even remotely close between lin and wall. wall is a superstar. lin is an average or maybe slightly above average starting player if healthy.

We dont know what Russell is yet. he has the potential to be as good or better then beal. we wont know for a couple years. but the potential is there. Lin is not in the same universe as john wall

Stop being a troll. I was comparing him to Conley and he is definitely comparable in every way as explained by the video above. If you don't see that, I should pretty sure you think earth is flat too so let's just stop debating cause it is like talking to a 2 years old.

Come on man!!!! Are you serious with this? Wall was a top 3-5 player at his position this year. If you include playoffs he was probably one of the 10 best players in the league. I know D'Lo is no all star yet but the gap between him and Beal isn't nearly as large as the one between Lin and Wall. The Lin love is borderline out of control
