Looking for a team to support
Hello guys
I'm new here and am a big basketball fan from Europe. The thing is I haven't really decided to support a team fully. I got some in my mind but I'm not sure yet. One of those teams are the Nets. Since Lopez is gone I'm not sure how they will play because he was the reason I liked the Nets lol
I don't even know if this is the right part to post this but what can you say about this team? I know Billy King did a lot of crap work and basically forced this franchise in the current position. What are the most memorable things? Also what is the difference between you guys and the Knicks fanbase? In general what can you guys tell me about your fanbase? How is Brooklyn compared to Manhattan? Is it easy for a foreigner to watch games?
I hope I'm not asking for too much. Thanks for any responses.

Looking for a team to support
Welcome!
Nets are a franchise with little luck. That really started from its inception when the Nets were located in Uniondale, Long Island. They were the New York Nets of the ABA. The early inception of the NY Nets was led by HOF, Rick Barry.
They ended up developing acquiring a stud talent in the ABA named Julius Erving who helped lead them to two ABA championships back in 1976. Of course, the Nets ended up being one of the four (Spurs, Pacers, Nuggets) to join the ABA-NBA merger.
This is where the true history of the Knicks-Nets rivalry starts:
Nets had officially merged with the ABA in 1976-77 coming off two championships with Erving, the Nets acquired Nate 'Tiny' Archibald and were expected to have a massive one-two punch in the league. Until, the New York Knicks came in and threw down a $4.9m dollar fee for invading their "territory" and due to the expenses owner Roy Boe already put in to merge the Nets into the NBA. He couldn't afford to pay Julius Erving, he held out of camp and thus his contract rights were sold to the Philadelphia 76ers. The rest is history.
The next star to come the Nets was Drazen Petrovic by way of a lucky deal with Portland. Unfortunately, we won't ever know what his legacy as a pro could've truly been.
The next difference maker came in Jason Kidd after the Nets acquired him for Stephon Marbury. The Nets 'glory' era in the NBA starts there with Kidd basically coming in and telling the team 'The losing stops here.' and the Nets won 49 games after that and made two back-to-back trips to the Finals against the dynasty Lakers and Spurs.
The exciting era was the Vince Carter era after Kenyon Martin was traded. The trio of Kidd-Carter-Jefferson became the next phase in the franchise but never got to the Finals.
Skipping past the Billy King era lol
I think we've got a underrated core of kids like LeVert, RHJ, Jarrett Allen, Dinwiddie and now Russell. Isaiah Whitehead also. Our coach and GM has a clean cut organized culture in place with influence from the Spurs family tree.
Btw, we're actually tied all-time with the Knicks in total franchise wins/losses and have more recent postseason success but that doesn't stop the hype machine behind that franchise.
The Nets could've been there but the Knicks never wanted to see that happen thus, our move to Brooklyn being the reason the Nets made various win now deals to stick it to them. It didn't work over the long haul and we're back to rebuilding but I'd say we've done well for a team in the basement.
Brooklyn itself has too much history and tradition to even begin to explore. It's like it's own world. 3 million residents. Largest borough but the most laid back, less huddle of people compared to Manhattan. Brooklyn has its own heritage, history, culture, style etc.

Re: Looking for a team to support
I'm a Lakers fan that grew up spoiled watching the Showtime Lakers in the 80s, the most beautiful style of play with Magic's passing, Worthy's post moves, and Kareem's unstoppable sky hook. Being a fan of a winning championship team is fantastic. The only thing better is . . .
Being a fan of a crappy, underdog team that, through the right management, culture, players, and attitude, wins a championship. You have to get in on the bottom floor to truly reap the emotional reward of reaching the mountaintop. There's no joy or respect for being a bandwagon fan that roots for a team that's already won. I had a friend from Singapore in the 90s who rooted for the Cowboys, Yankees, Bulls, Hulk Hogan, whoever was the mainstream winner -- and I found that just sad. There's more joy in rooting for Leicester City for years and finally winning the Premier League than supporting Manchester United like any other chump.
I came to root for the Nets because of Jeremy Lin, the ultimate NBA underdog, but I have grown to enjoy everything that the Nets stand for:
- humility - the Nets have suffered the worst ignominious situation after the Billy King era, hitting rock bottom, and are ready to try things the right way with a long-term horizon
- culture - Sean Marks and Kenny Atkinson have emphasized a team culture that demands character, leadership, responsibility, effort, teamwork, and loyalty. Kenny's former players from his Knicks and Hawks days rave about his dedication, and I had no doubt that Lin would choose the Nets in free agency based on his relationship with Kenny from the Linsanity days. And it's also telling that Lin was basically Marks's first free agent signing since Lin embodies the new Nets culture. Every single player from Levert to Crabbe to Carroll to Harris to Kilpatrick all have a chip on their shoulder and are underrated players who have something to prove. If you want the opposite culture -- team dysfunction, boneheaded management, selfish play and attitude -- buy a Melo jersey and jump on the Dolan/Knicks bandwagon.
- smart management - The Billy King legacy left the Nets in a hole and to dig themselves out, the Nets have to play an NBA version of Moneyball where they capitalize on undervalued players and skills to overcome other deficiencies. One of the reasons the Warriors were able to succeed was because Stephen Curry was the best contract in the NBA at 4 year/ 44 million.
- style of play -- the Nets will play at one of the fastest paces in the league with lots of 3pters and a flexible defense where most players can switch coverage. For 3pters, Lin is a career 35%er, Russell is a career 35% who will only improve, Levert shot 40% in college, Crabbe was the second best 3pt shooter in the NBA last year and is 41% career, Carroll is career 36%, Harris is career 38%, Dinwiddie shot 38% last year -- the Nets will CARPET BOMB the NBA this season.

Wasn't it like Hilary was based in Brooklyn and Bernie was from there?
Brooklyn Grit. Guys play hard and unselfish every game.
Knicks fans are suffering seriously with a moron as owner. They inexplicably support Melo.
Atkinson spent quite a few years in Europe.
Too bad Bogdanovic is gone, we drafted Vezenkov tho.

This is exactly what I'm looking for in a team! For example the old Memphis Grizzlies were just fun to watch. Played hard and had a good defense. Now I'm looking forward to watch those young guys play. What I don't understand is will you start Russel and Lin? Or will Lin be your sixth man? They're both PG.
Also I'll not support the Knicks! I don't like anything about them. In general I'm against big market teams and I have build a "hate" against the Lakers because a good friend of mine is a big Laker guy. You all might know how this goes down.
and thank you for the responses so far love to read them!

Cool! Yeah, those Grizz were really grinding it, too bad it looks like they're undergoing some changes now.
Lin is the starting PG for sure. DRuss is most likely gonna be the starting SG. Looks like his position in the NBA will mainly be SG.

Re: Looking for a team to support
@ChokeFasncists thanks I think this makes a lot of sense playing Russel at the 2. The only player I don't know is Caroll. He played pretty bad in Toronto. I hope he can pick up his game back to the Hawks days. Who is the Rookie to watch?
special thanks to @Paradise
I'm watching those videos right now I like Ronda great guy! Feel free to educate me more on the culture or post some videos.
In terms of visiting games is it easy for a foreigner to get tickets?
You guys might be getting a new supporter in me even though I need to watch some games to fully commit. I haven't posted in any other forum yet I don't even know if I will. Kinda like what I saw so far. I hope if I choose to be a Nets you'll welcome me.
In terms of play style and coach I think it sounds very exciting! I hope they play hard and with heart. I don't mind losing if the guys give their all.

Re: Looking for a team to support
Flint I will guarantee you that if you watch our games this season, you'll see a team that may not be perfect or have the most talent, but they will play hard all 48 minutes win or lose. We posted a 21 win record last season but I enjoyed watching the team play more than I have at any time over the last 6 years. They are very easy to root for. Jeremy Lin has become a welcome addition to our team because he plays hard on both ends of the court and leads by example.
This year we will be better offensively because of the added three point shooting and progression from our young players: Russell, LeVert, Whitehead, and Hollis-Jefferson should also trend upwards.
It will be a fun year for sure, win or lose. Expect lots of three point bombs.

We will be carpet bombing teams. I don't think general basketball fans have a clue what's coming. If Whitehead can get himself into the 34%-35% range and LeVert gets closer to his college %, oh lordy....

It's a complete 180 from the early Brooklyn days. Playing hard for 48 minutes was so far away from the mindset of those teams.
I'm so glad things have changed. I'd rather root for a scrappy underdog than lazy, skilled player.

NP. DMC said he's much healthier now cuz of the Nets performance team, we shall see.
We've got only one rookie in Jarrett Allen, he's super gifted. If he has a high motor and stays healthy, we should see some really exciting stuff from him.
LeVert is almost a rookie. He is very versatile and could break out this season.

I'd rather lose because the other team just has better players instead of losing because our players don't care. This is why I don't care if we win 28 or 32 games. play hard and work on getting better is all i ask for.
and hit threes. lots of threes

Re: Looking for a team to support
Our Rookie looks like he's straight from a 70's movie. Look at that stache! I haven't seen him play at all but how can you not like this guy.
@MrDollarBills bro you speak out of my soul. I would also rather lose because they had better players instead of our guys not caring to play. Fun basketball for me always is when the team plays hard. Luckily we have Jeremy Lin who always gives 100%. Russel is a question mark. He is talented and could have a bright future.
I'm excited to be a part of this community and can't wait to watch the first game with you guys. I assume we'll have live game threads on here for every game, right?

yeah we are pretty active in game threads.
I enjoyed watching the Nets win 21 games more than I enjoyed the entire NBA playoffs last season. That's how hard these guys played.

We posted a 21 win record last season but I enjoyed watching the team play more than I have at any time over the last 6 years. They are very easy to root for. Jeremy Lin has become a welcome addition to our team because he plays hard on both ends of the court and leads by example.
It's a complete 180 from the early Brooklyn days. Playing hard for 48 minutes was so far away from the mindset of those teams.
I'm so glad things have changed. I'd rather root for a scrappy underdog than lazy, skilled player.
I'd rather lose because the other team just has better players instead of losing because our players don't care. This is why I don't care if we win 28 or 32 games. play hard and work on getting better is all i ask for.
and hit threes. lots of threes
Lots of blocks too.
73 blocks between Lin, Whitehead and Dinwiddie last season.
