GCP tracking of NETS players

Post#1 » by Yit » Mon Oct 30, 2017 3:12 pm

Hi all,

Not sure what happened at the normal GT that it got locked - so I will put in the GCP here if the GT ever gets locked up again (I will also add in an overall summary at the end of each month - so will probably also post another info of our players GCP (and if I have the time add in the GCP of other notable NBA players for comparison)

So for GCP for the game against Denver, our players performance by GCP is:

Dinwiddie - 43 (+++)
RHJ - 29 (=)
Harris - 27 (+)
Booker - 21 (+)
Kilpatrick - 19 (=)
Mozgov - 15 (-)
DAR - 12 (-)
CLV - 12 (-)
Zeller - 9 (-)
Crabbe - 7 (--)
Allen - 5 (-)
Wiley - 3 (-)
Whitehead - 2 (-)

Still not enough players putting up enough effort but Dinwiddie was stellar and deserves consideration for a spot.
Stability is a myth perpetuated by the agents called homeostasis and status quo....

Code: Select all

Name                     |   RPG
Jarrett Allen            |   10.1
Allen Crabbe             |   2.3
Jeremy Lin               |   6.1

You can use the code tags to create tables because it doesn't concatenate whitespace. The alignment seems to get a bit off with tabspaces. What I'd do is lay it out how you want in a raw text editor or export from excel/google sheets pasted here preview and then use additional spaces after words to fix the alignment.

The above example is doing that. Here's what it looks like with just tabspaces. And then periods in place of where I put spaces in the first example.

Code: Select all

Name               |   RPG
Jarrett Allen            |   10.1
Allen Crabbe            |   2.3
Jeremy Lin            |   6.1

Name......               |   RPG
Jarrett Allen            |   10.1
Allen Crabbe.            |   2.3
Jeremy Lin...            |   6.1

Annoying I know. Ah well.

Okay will try to explain - GCP (Game Contribution Points) - is just another method of assessing the performance of players. In a gist - it's just a combination score of the basic stats (playing time, points scored, steals, blocks etc, etc.)

So far I have found it useful to track if players have improve over the season, broadly the star players should be averaging above a GCP score of 30 per game. The top list can be an indication of whether the players deserve to get into the All-Star games.

If you're going to make up a stat then you have to also post the formula. People have to understand where these numbers are coming from. If not then its just a number you're pulling out of thin air.

It's been posted previously - just got lost in some of the threads but if you are interested it goes something like this:

GCP = Score Index + Bonus - Penalties + (+/- factor/5)

Score Index = Point Scored with Shooting Efficiency Modifications with Time moderation modifications
Shooting Efficiency moderation is achieved by Points scored + (Player Shooting%-Team Shooting%)*PointsScored (which gives a Base Score)
Time moderation is achieved by BaseScore + ((BaseScore/PlayingTime) - (TeamScore/TotalTeamPlayingTime))*BaseScore
Stability is a myth perpetuated by the agents called homeostasis and status quo....

GCP = Score Index + Bonus - Penalties + (+/- factor/5)

This is all still way too complicated for a knuckledragging, mouthbreather like me but I'll just assume it makes sense. I just blindly accept Hollinger's PER value so why not accept Yit's GCP score.

This being said, I think a true measure of a player's value should also somehow incorporate defensive value. Also, I don't understand the +/- number after the GCP number. It's easier to accept PER or BPM or Ortg because it's just one number. I like round numbers. I don't understand the +/- deviation numbers.

Yes, it's rather complicated - I have another tracking called the Defensive Effort but still considering if that is useful.

But quickly the +/- is using the +/- score for each player (divided by 5) - assumption is that a player is 1/5 contributor for the net positive or net negative when the team was playing - i.e. reference to the +/- column in the team stats table.

The GCP does include Defensive Rebounds as well as steals in the score (and Block shots) - so some aspects of defense is included.

Hi all, somehow by the time I got to our forums the GT versus Raptors got locked by the naturally heated discussions... sigh

Anyways here's the tracking of performance of Nets players against Raptors for 8 Jan 2018

Dinwiddie - 56 (+++)
Allen - 41 (+++)
Crabbe - 40 (++)
RHJ - 39 (+)
Harris - 15 (-)
Acy - 15 (=)
CLV - 5 (-)
Doyle - 4 (-)
Zeller - 2 (--)
Okafor - 1 (-)

It sucks to lose so narrowly - but our team is growing strong which bodes well for the future. CLV just came back so he may need a few more games to get back to his previous form. Okafor is new so his performance will swing up and down.

Sigh, another locked thread, so am posting the tracking of performance vs Pistons here:

Tracking players performance versus Pistons 10 Jan 2018
Crabbe - 44 (++)
RHJ - 28 (=)
CLV - 17 (=)
Zeller - 15 (-)
Harris - 9 (--)
Allen - 7(-)
Mozgov - 6 (-)
Dinwiddie - 4 (--)
Stauskas - 1 (-)
Okafor - 0 (-)
Acy - (-4) (--)

Too many players in the negatives - also we are on pace for a 30 win season at the halfway mark - which is a marked improvement from last season 20 wins.

Okay we have hit like quite a substantive number of games - so I have computed the Cost/GCP for the star level NBA players and found that the averaged Cost per GCP works out to be around $472,115/GCP point. So what's this useful for? We can use this as a gauge if our players are worth their salaries - which I will try to post another day.

you do know that this system doesn't account for defense much, right?

The GCP has included some defensive stats - it is more an overall picture - I have a different tracking for just the defense itself (which I call defensive effort - but still working out the kinks on that.

define the factors it would have?
