Celtics Owner on How he Swindled Billy King

Post#1 » by Hello Brooklyn » Mon May 14, 2018 8:27 am

For those of you interested, Bill Simmons had Celtics Owner Wyc Grousbeck on his podcast today.

They talked specifically about how the Nets trade went down.

At first, the trade was just two First Round picks. Sensing the Nets were desperate, Grousbeck then told Ainge to ask for another one. After that he asked for a Fourth Pick.

After they refused to get a Fourth one, he asked for a pick swap instead.

Basically, he implied that the Celtics were willing to do that deal for only two first round picks and no pick swaps. But he conned Billy King into giving him way more.

Starts at 1:06 for anyone interested

Cool, I was thinking about posting this:

https://www.theringer.com/2018/5/11/17346416/bill-simmons-podcast-celtics-owner-wyc-grousbeck-brooklyn-trade

Seems like they belive it was Prok who messed up instead of King:

Mainly:
Grousbeck: “Great. Go get a fourth pick. I think these guys have deal fever — we’re going to keep going until they say no. I think they’ve been told by ownership to get the deal done, so let’s go back.”

But also:
Simmons: You caught a big break, though, in that trade about a year later, because they actually changed their mind-set of what they wanted to do with their team, and [Nets owner Mikhail] Prokhorov didn’t want to spend the tax anymore, and he just didn’t want to spend as much money on a contender. That all of a sudden swung the equation, because that first year after the trade they were a contender. People thought that was a team that might make the Finals. But then they switched directions … and that was the best thing that could have happened.
MorbidHEAT wrote:My dislike for Lin started during Linsanity. It was absurd. It's probably irrational dislike at this point, but man he gets on my nerves. He's been tearing us up though.
Thanks for the honesty.

Step 2: Listen to offer, which will include assets that no sane GM would offer without protection.

Step: 3: Ask for more than what he was offering.

Talking about that trade depresses me. :(

The Brooklyn Celtics:
Marcus Smart
Terry Rozier
Jaylen Brown
Jason Tatum

Boston 2019
-The Celtics have their own 2019 pick, but the chances of that being in the lottery seem slim.
-The Celtics have the LAC 2019 pick but it's 1-14 protected (then 1-14 protected in 2020, and if it doesn't convey that year than Boston just gets LAC's 2022 2nd rounder--it's impossible for this pick to ever be a lottery pick)
-The Celtics have the better of SAC 2019 and PHI 2019, except both are top 1 protected (so if SAC wins the lottery Boston gets stuck with PHI's pick).
-The Celtics have the MEM 2019 pick (1-8 protected, then 1-6 protected, then unprotected in 2021)

Marks needs to do whatever he can to fleece teams and wind up with a selection of future picks

The part that pisses me off the most is how badly Billy King played his cards in that trade.

We could have gotten the deal done with merely the '14 and '16 pick. Instead we gave double that.

Both the '17 and '18 picks should have been ours.

Jaylen Brown would have been the only major asset we lost in that trade.

And I can live with that since I believe we got Caris LeVert in that draft. But not having Jason Tatum here is a brutal. Can you imagine if we had Levert/Tatum/RHJ/Allen as our young core?

I hope Billy King develops IBS.

There were a number of better articles on this a while ago... Bill Simmons' Celtics bias / 24-7 spin-cylce is sickening.

If we didn't have to pick swap last draft we could have drafted Tatum if memory serves me correct?

We could've gone in any direction sitting at #1. It could've been us swapping Fultz for Tatum & Sacramento's 2019 top 1 protected pick. Thank you Billy King.

As vomit inducing as this is, if Bill King doesn't make that trade theres a part of me that believes that he would still be sitting in the GM chair.
This is not a not burner account
