It would probably include Carroll going to a 3rd team for a smaller contract to make it work. We're a few million short of being able to do it straight up.

This makes a lot of sense for everyone.

Would be fantastic to squeeze a first or two out of them. Love it.

OKC owes Orlando a top-20 protected 1st in 2020, so they can't trade 2019 or 2021. They also owe Charlotte a 2019 2nd. The best we can get is inverse of the Orlando pick protected 21-20 in 2020, a 2022 1st, pick swaps, or 2nds in 2020 or beyond. We could also ask for Ferguson and/or Diallo. If we send Carroll elsewhere, you wonder what compensation will be required. Sacramento wants a SF. Would they take him into space for free? Would they give up Skal?

A buyout of Melo would net us only like what, 6-8 million? Maybe more? I guess if a pick is coming back that'd be huge, but as TNF pointed out, OKC can't trade 19, 20, or 21.
I'd hate to lose DMC for the season if he were thrown in to match salaries. But I'm sure then we'd be looking at Marcus Smart at that point.

If this were to go down this trade does make sense for both parties.
If I were Marks, I would ask for Ferguson, but highly doubtful Presti gives him up. It may just be a collection of later picks for BK in return, which I guess I'm okay with if it means moving Lin from an already crowded back court. And, I could still take a trip up the Turnpike to show him some support.

We would have to dump Carroll or Crabbe onto a team that has cap space to make this work.

maybe they give up on Ferguson now that they have another young project in Diallo?
I'd like a future 1st too. ****, if they can't trade up to a 2021 pick, maybe go for the unprotected 2022 pick... who knows by then maybe they've moved on from Paul George and Westbrook and it's a goldmine of a pick.

I wish the Lakers and Nets would make another deal like Crabbe for Josh Hart. I know Brooklyn doesn't need another guard.....but the Lakers need another shooter. Just a pipe dream because I like Hart's game.

Would be a miracle if we could unload Crabbe somewhere in this deal. Helps with the ORGANIC TANK and gives us preposterous amounts of cap space next summer.

It's a little premature to make a thread based on a rumor in one tweet. It'll remain for now but let's not make this a regular thing otherwise we'll have many threads involving rumors that do not come to fruition.

I think this is where the deal could really break down. Only two teams (ATL, SAC) have the cap space to take on Carroll or Crabbe, and it would be dumb for a couple rebuilding squads to take on that salary for free - even the Kings, who have a gaping hole on their roster at SF.

Agreed.

This is where my poor understanding of capspace always trip me up.
If Melo makes $28m and Lin makes $12.5m, that's a difference of $15.5m. The Nets have around $11.5m in capspace so now they'd be $4m over? But what if the Nets bought out Melo, say for $6m, doesn't that bring us back under the cap?
Please someone explain to a knuckledragger like me.

yeah too bad. I could see Crabbe or Carroll actually fitting in well with the Kings. But not being able to pry a pick within the next 3 years from OKC kinda stinks.

I don't want anymore late rd picks... lotto or top 20....
plus, what's the point? cap space for what, isn't Lin up after this year?
If we buyout Melo, does that put a hold on our cap for the next few years?

I'm no cap expert, but my understanding is this: If we trade and go over the cap (like we would for Melo), it doesn't matter if we intend to buy him out immediately afterwards - we're operating as an over the cap team for that trade, so our incoming/outgoing salaries have to be within $5MM of each other.

If Marks got the inverse of the 2020 pick and Diallo or Ferguson, I'd be happy with that.
But whichever team we'd send Carroll to would have to pony up another asset or two.

SAC seems hellbent on signing younger RFAs and maintaining a young roster. I think Carroll would be too much of a win now player for them.

The point is that you:
1) free up the logjam at PG
2) get more cap space to either sell 2 max free agents on teaming up in BKN next offseason OR take on more bad salary/help buyout; players and get assets in return;
3) obtain more assets in picks or young players that can be developed or be used in a trade for star player sometime down the road.
If we buyout Melo, does that put a hold on our cap for the next few years?
No...buyout money is only on the books for this year. Plus, Melo's contract is only for this year anyway. If Melo were bought out and stretched, then the money would be spread over multiple years.
