Hi!

Not a Nets fan, but just trying to make sense of your cap situation after the Prince-Crabbe trade if you want to sign KD + Kyrie.

Am I right in thinking that if you renounce everything possible you have a roster that looks like:

Dinwiddie = 10605084
Harris = 7666667
Prince = 3481986
LeVert = 2625718
Allen = 2376840
Musa = 1911600
Kurucs = 1699236
Nets_dead_cap = 5474787
5 * VRC = 5 * 897158 (vacant roster charges)
-------------------
$40,327,708
------------------
Sign Durant and then take off one VRC
-----------------
$77,580,550
-----------------
leaving you $1,280,550 over from what you would need for Irving

(To waive and stretch anyone to get that amount it would have to be Prince - which seems non-ideal.)
----------------
If you hang on to Russell's hold and could trade Harris and Dinwiddie for non-salary cap things (2nd round/future picks etc/rookie mins) then that adds $4,581,659 to the overshoot, totaling $5,862,209
---------------

Am I missing stuff here or getting things badly confused?

All estimations right now still include the 27th pick, which is just below $2M. If we take a stash at that pick, we are less than $1M short for full max for Kyrie and KD.

I think we are better off giving assets to the Celtics in a S&T than excpecting star players to tighten their belts.

A package of Dinwiddle, Harris, Graham plus maybe a 2022 pick for Kyrie (after we sign Durant) means that we can probably keep DLO, Napier, and Pinson.

No, the numbers don't work any better via sign-and-trade than they do with cpa-clearing moves and outright FA signings.

1 or both of Durant and Kyrie would need to take modest (for them) reductions from their max salary, in order to make it work for all 3 to be in Brooklyn. I think with Caris and Taurean here, Kevin's workout buddies, he will take a cut. Would Kyrie do likewise? IF so, imagine the lineup:

Irving, Russell, Prince, Durant, Allen
Pinson, LeVert, Musa, Kurucs, Williams

Adding a Kyrie level talent to our core would definitely improve us but if we were to add Kyrie + KD we'd be right there as title contenders for the next 3-5 years. As much as I love me some Dlo, you'd have to pull the trigger if that's what it takes.

If Marks can find a way to add Kyrie + KD + Keep Russ then he's a god. I read something about acquiring a 15m exception in the Crabbe trade could this be a way to bypass the cap issue to be able to pull something like that off?

Regardless of what happens, all of the options available are great but the dream is KD or Kawhi obviously.

pretty sure you can't combine trade exceptions with players. or at least that used to be a rule.

Putting on my conspiracy theory cap, Pablo getting poached by the wolves, who have KAT and yet are over the cap...maybe that 3 team S&T involving DLo & AD is in play after all. DLo to Minny, a bunch of young players/picks/expirings to NO, AD to Nets.

I've said it a bajillion times, probably trying to optimistically wish it into existence, but that's the type of scenario where it would make sense to trade DLo and bring in Kyrie. Letting DLo walk for nothing to bring in an older + more expensive kyrie just feels...wrong.

Yeah - you're right - that was garbage - and you have to keep over the cap to keep exceptions. Thanks.

Lowe, Russilo dropping more hints. They dismiss the Irving/DLo paring as an option.

While I am of the opinion that a DLo/Kyrie pairing is not ideal, I don’t think the believe they couldn’t make it work somehow.

I love Russell and still 50/50 on him v. Irving. However if Irving is 100% set on coming here and we're not keeping Russell, is it pretty much guaranteed that'd we'd just let him walk? Is there any way we can obtain assets for him?

Like is there any way we can send him to Phoenix or Minnesota and get something back?

Knick fans like him are delusional, if Kyrie and KD team up here the Barclays will be the hottest ticket in town.

Minny is over the cap so I don't think that works unless it's some kind of a 3 team trade (like AD).

Phoenix is interesting though, especially since there are rumors about the 6th pick etc. Here's an overview on Phoenix' cap situation per Bobby Marks, bolded the important part. So long story short, there could be a S&T that makes sense with them, though I'd expect the 6th overall to be part of it which would end up complicating things because we'd be agreeing to deal DLo before FA officially starts...so we'd have to be really really optimistic about Kyrie...

Phoenix Suns

There is too much uncertainty to put the Suns on the list of teams with cap space. Because of Kelly Oubre Jr.'s $9.6 million free-agent hold, Phoenix is considered over the cap when you combine the $9.3 million midlevel and $3.6 million biannual exceptions.

The Suns could have between $17 million and $30 million by renouncing Oubre, trading Josh Jackson or moving Tyler Johnson with the future first-rounder from the Bucks attached.

Letting Russell walk would still be the most surprising possibility this offseason IMO. I could see Marks moving Dinwiddie for a lotto pick. Which I believe would get them close to being able to do 2 30% maxes with DLo, or 1 35% max and 1 other bigger contract. And obviously add someone they really like in the draft to go with the younger developmental core of Allen/Kurocs/Musa.

I don't even think the Suns trade is possible given Russell's FA status.

Right i think it would have to be a s&t. But im not positive. Reading the latest from Woj it doesn't sound like we will do anything with DLo until we know what else is going to happen and obviously even with whatever assurances it won't be known in 2 weeks at the draft.

This would be a very good non Max FA team.
Dlo/George Hill
Harris/Levert
Prince/Kurucs
Randle/Brandon Clarke(trade DW to move up)
Vucevic/Allen

Would be very balanced team IMO. We got offense and defense. You can mix and match the starters and bench really well. I have Allen as backup center cuz Vucevic is better overall. Say what you want about his defense. I don't trust Allen being the paint patroller neither. We have better wings to prevent guard penetration. So our bigs can focus on guarding their own man and not get into foul trouble trying to guard the smalls.
