The 8th anniversary of the Deron Williams trade

Post#1 » by Paradise » Sun Feb 24, 2019 4:47 pm

I can’t believe we’re approaching nearly 10 years since Dwightmare, Melodrama and the Billy King era began. This trade also helped the creation of Draymond Green to GSW.

Deron Williams for Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter and Gorgui Dieng. The Jazz dealt Dieng and Shabazz Mohammad’s draft rights to Minnesota for Trey Burke.

Makes sense why Kanter continues to be a Net killer in 2019.

We could of got Harden with those assets. Still not a horrible trade in hindsight but he ruined this franchise.

We could have gotten Harden with the 6th pick that was traded for Gerald Wallace.

The worst thing to ever happen to this franchise. And I don't even blame Billy King for that one.

Guys comes from a top 10 player to a bum in just a few years. I still don't understand what happened to that guy.

His decline was rapid, but he just sitting back earning checks from numerous franchise's now, and probably not giving a chit about the franchise's he bamboozled.

You don't blame Billy King? Pretty sure I recall Billy King at the time saying that he preferred to acquire Deron over CP3 in a trade (in the press conference following trade). Considering that CP3 was the next big PG to move in a trade, we could have been in for him, if we never traded for Deron...

The 8th anniversary of the Deron Williams trade

Post#12 » by Paradise » Mon Feb 25, 2019 2:31 am

This was his last all star level playoff performance.

His decline will forever cap the strangest eras in the history of this franchise. Obviously, we know he didn’t love the game like that anymore but I think Game 4 vs Atlanta was the most attention he’s ever gotten for being such a disappointment.

I truly think he intended on hiding and relaxing behind Pierce, KG and that 2015 season seeing Lopez carry us and Young come right in and put in work really showed how poor of a basketball player he was. He turned it into a great game and I think it’s probably the loudest Barclays has ever been in the postseason which is sad because he could’ve had that if he truly loved the game and tried to be a real star.

Deron is the prime example of bad karma. His legacy from getting Sloan fired, whining about the Nets trade to crumbling in the “NY spotlight” as he called it.

Billy can’t be blamed for the deal but he can be for forcing major deals to build around a guy who didn’t show any ounce of humility during his NJ season which was a first red flag. He virtually thought he was LeBron or something because we were the lowly Nets so forcing a deal for Wallace or KG, Pierce vs putting together pieces that indicate to Deron - “Do more” was his biggest problem.

Teams like Portland didn’t make crazy trades using lotto picks after being swept by New Orleans. There was no need to do it after Deron didn’t put together a good showing.

Whats he supposed to say after we got Deron?

Deron was a bonafide Superstar and we needed one before we moved to Brooklyn. Nobody could have predicted Deron's epic collapse.

Waiting for CP3 was no certainty at the time.

it was 100% the right move...

When we aquired Deron Williams he was a 26 year old all-NBA player just entering his prime coming off a 21/10/4 season. He was for sure a top 12 player at the time, if not top 8.

That would be like if we traded levert, our 2 picks and RHJ for Kawhi Leonard right now.

Billy King's franchise killing move wasnt trading for deron, it was trading for wallace.

You just cant plan for an all-nba player to deline to bench/retirment level at 29 with no major injury involved.

Yeah I hate Billy King but the Deron Williams saga was not his fault. Going back to look over the NBA era of 2007-2010, Deron Williams was owning the league. It was him or CP3 as the best point guard in the game. He was great in NJ and after the move to Brooklyn we only saw spurts of what he could be. Talent alone isn't enough to get you by in the NBA. Billy King's downfall was his mismanagement of assets and faulty evaluation of returns.

I remember being so psyched when we traded for him. I was literally in some kind of dazed state and I couldn't work for the rest of the day. What a terrible disappointment on how that whole episode ended. I can only imagine how utterly devastating him and Dwight would've been on the same team.

Make you think about the story of the Brooklyn side of things: Chapter 1 - High hopes and mega failures, Chapter 2 - Darkness, Chapter 3 - A new hope

We only made the Deron Williams trade because management and ownership felt they needed a superstar in place for their move to Brooklyn. They felt they needed an attraction to get fans to buy tickets. But to be honest the right move would’ve been to continue the rebuild without making those trades.

Billy King's fault wasn't trading for Williams, it was:

1) Trading the 6th pick for Gerald Wallace, an all time horrific trade.

2) Not getting enough compensation in return for Joe Johnson. That was a salary dump. We should have had at least 1 to 2 first round picks coming our way, or a young prospect attached to Johnson.

3) Overpaying in the deal for PP/KG.

Billy should of never made that trade for Wallace when he was going to be a FA that year too, then we overpaid him. Even if we had that pick, we would of never drafted Dame Lilliard, we would of drafted Zeller or some trash like that.

That Pierce/KG trade crippled this franchise without a doubt. I remember when the trade happened, I was a little excited, but then I'm like why the hell would you trade THREE UNPROTECTED PICKS?!!! You never ever ever do that, unless it's a young person in their prime, like Harden.

Man those were some harsh times, if anybody were fans during those bad years, then you are a REAL fan in my book. Marks turned this franchise around really quick. I thought we would of sucked for 5 more years at least.
