Question for TheNetsFan or anyone else who knows how the cap and salaries work.

Could we offer Durant a structured contract that backloaded? This is in order to sign Kyrie and Russell this summer.

Could you structure it like 15 million in the first year, then significant bumps in the following years?

No. The max raise per year is only 5% of the first year salary.

Let’s say we land Kyrie, but no Kawhi or KD. Would some sort of swap around Dinwiddie for Otto Porter be a better consolation prize than shedding Dinwiddie and trying to land Tobias?

As NetsFan said, there's a certain limit to how much you can raise each year. So Durant taking a smaller 1st year means a significant lower total salary.

The best case scenario that I can kind of think of...is using a signing bonus. It doesn't really alter how much is counted on the cap, however, the player gets that signing bonus up front.

Roughly doing math, if KD signs a 4 year max with us, it will be a $163, 784, 750 over 4 years.

If, say he takes a 1st year salary of $34M (I chose this figure because it is what I believe the max we can afford with Kyrie 32M, Russell cap hold, and trading Dinwiddie and stashing 27th pick), then his total contract will be $146,544,250.

It's $17M less than what he would have gotten with the full max, but he would get nearly $22M of it when he signs. Is that enough to entice him? He's got a huge market and business investments, so maybe that full $22M upfront can help him fund his business right away?

It's a huge financial risk obviously due to his injury. Tsai and Prok are basically giving him $55M before he plays a single second.

The same can be done with Kyrie, who would get about 120M vs 137M over 4, but get $18M of it upfront.

Not really an option for Russell as his 21M cap hold is already lower than any starting point of a max deal.

Don't think that makes much sense before we see what Prince looks like here.

Fair question.

I like Otto better than Tobias slightly, but for this team, with LeVert/Musa/Kurucs/Prince able to mop up SF minutes, I'd rather get a purer PF. Porter can moonlight there, but Harris is more of a natural 4.

Besides, I don't think he's available. CHI should be high on him, he really looked great there in a small sample size, and ignited their squad's overall level of play.

I'd only trade Dinwiddie for a top 15 pick and based on the value of his contract I think he could justify that. He's a better player with a better contract than Prince and we considered him worth the #17 (or close). Think back to George Hill's value when the Spurs traded him.

Presumably Marks would only deal up in the draft if a guy he really likes is there, and if he likes someone in this draft who slides past 10 like say Nasir Little, or Rui, or Clarke, or maybe even Hunter, I'm all for him adding a potential starter talent on a rookie deal and saving money to pursue veterans.

btw I like Porter, just wouldn't give up Dinwiddie for him. I know we just got him, but I'd probably be willing to trade Prince for him in a cap clearing move if we get Irving. Not sure we can accommodate all these guys salary wise but I'd be happy entering camp with this starting 5 (with Dinwiddie as 6th man or traded for a draft pick if necessary for $ reasons):
Kyrie
DLo
Levert
Porter
Allen

Just as a response to my last post in the last thread where I was pretty critical of Kyrie and people were saying that I was exaggerating my list of players that I'd rank over him just for some entertainment/shock value, I want to say that I honestly believe what I was saying and wasn't really exaggerating anything.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited for Kyrie in Brooklyn the more and more it's looking like a reality, just because of the star power and the fact that I know he CAN be really good, but at the end of this past season, I was speaking honestly about how I objectively value him.

That's all I'll say about that.

Kyrie + Kawhi/AD would be amazing. The achilles injury for KD just sounds like a giant red flag, since an achilles injury late in a player's career is pretty much always a death sentence for their career. I think the wisest and most forward-thinking decision from our camp would be to step out of the Durant sweepstakes at this point, I really do think he's damaged goods at this point and will never be the same player again. Throwing a multi-year max at him will result in failure imo. I think looking towards guys like Kawhi and AD would be a much better option, and if we're not able to attain them, just focus on building up the rest of the team instead of chasing Durant.

I like Harris better than Porter, especially if Harris plays how he did on the Clippers as opposed to being like the 5th option for Philly.

He could be the perfect fit at the 4, but he's not so good he hampers Kurucs getting playing time and developing.
If we "only" get Kyrie and re-sign Russell and they choose to hang onto Dinwiddie and Harris for now, he could definitely be the guy they go for, along with re-signing Ed Davis, while retaining the Room Exception and BAE to fill out the depth above vet min candidates.

He's a unrestricted free agent and like you said will allow Kurucs to compete with playing time steel sharpens steel . These players are similar
Nikola Mirotic (unrestricted)
Marcus Morris (unrestricted)
Al-Farouq Aminu (unrestricted)
Tobias Harris (unrestricted)
Markieff Morris (unrestricted)
Jeff Green (unrestricted)

Markieff Morris (unrestricted)
Jeff Green (unrestricted)

Bobby Portis (restricted)

Julius Randle (players option)

Ric Bucher Says Durant & Kyrie Had Dinner in New York, Discussed Teaming Up
posted by Wil Leitner - Jun 14, 2019

Ric Bucher: “I’m told Kevin Durant is out of the hospital, moved into a hotel for the time being in the New York area and him and Kyrie have met and have continued to discuss playing together next season. KD has moved all his stuff and will spend his summer in New York… Every indication says KD is making plans to be elsewhere because obviously Kyrie will not be joining the Warriors any time soon.”

I usually take Ric Bucher's "news" with a massive grain of salt. I even have doubts about the accuracy of this report.

With that said, if it's true that KD is staying in NYC for the summer, the Warriors really screwed up.

They never been in there to be honest. When the last time you saw top FA going to worst team? Those bum ass Nix will never learn. When they had a chance to get CP3 they signed TC instead of waiting and faq themselves up. They will never learn. I hope Marks know better... thus far can't doubt him.

How can he not? I think it only makes sense.

His business venture is here.

His agent is here.

His doctor is here (literally).

We have a first class facility.

There is no better place for him to rehab.

What that means ultimately as far as his FA means, who knows? But him staying in NY for rehab makes 100% sense to me

Windrem and Pooch are refuting Begley's reporting.

The Nets don't leak, so I will wait and see.

I will be very disappointed if D'Angelo Russell if not apart of this franchise going forward.

Same here. I love the idea of kyrie but the thought of losing him sucks.

Durant getting hurt really ruined everything for us. But if we get him and Kyrie next year it would be wonderful.

I'm just beginning to think KD will wanna stay now due to emotional reasons after getting injured.
