Kyrie: We need one or two more pieces

He’s not wrong...I think we all know what he means.
There’s no excuse to have Claxton on a G-League assignment If we’re not committing to adding a 3rd string vet center or backup PF.
The onus is now on Sean to provide some necessary support off the bench. If we’re going to develop Nic slowly, lets keep him in Long Island and sign some veterans or hungry forwards with these 2 way deals instead of waiving guys like Shumpert or not looking for a veteran PF with size through trade.
I know we don’t want to give up some guys here but we’re wasting our time with guys like Pinson when we could’ve added Melo or other guys on the cheap.

More bait for the fish. Even if you agree with him, and yeah part of me does, but it's probably not a good idea to name teammates. How many people on Twitter are gonna talk about the guys he didn't name or his stat line tonight?

Not a smart move for Kyrie just because of his reputation. This will get overblown.
I don't know why he said it. Hopefully he'll realize his mistake.

He's not wrong, but he shouldn't be saying that publicly because of his rep.

It'd be great if Ky could be diplomatic and NEVER discuss anything related to general management with the media. I'm not gonna hold my breath.
Ah well.
He doesn't have to be the best leader for me to want to be my best supporter of him and the Nets. Like Hello Brooklyn said this is in line with his reputation. We all might have hoped it'd be different or he'd handle the media better, but I think we kinda expected there to be incidents like this.
I spouted my fair share of Deron hate on here when that situation was souring. I think that's kinda behind me. While dude's are on this team I'm gonna root for them to do well and grow and accept more of the warts. I'll criticize, maybe less hating though.

Not sure which of these quotes were said first, but he should've stopped after thIs if this was first. Hell, he could've stopped after he talked about the guys that have been here for 3 years in the first Bontemps quote and it wouldn't have gotten overblown.

No fresco, Kyrie, no fresco at all. I might be in the minority but I am not all that impressed with Kyrie in Brooklyn so far.

If there’s a pattern I’ve noticed with him, it’s that I think he tries to be genuine to a fault. He will often tell you exactly how he feels at the moment, which (in some cases like this one) can lead to him saying stuff that he should keep to himself.
For example, I do believe that he wanted to re-sign in Boston when he spoke to Celtics fans (season-ticket holders?). He said it to endear himself to the fanbase, which is admirable. The problem is that there was a season left to be played and he couldn’t foresee how things would transpire.
Most players don’t say anything about re-signing with their own team even if it puts their home fans on edge for an entire season.
PG never said anything publicly about re-signing with OKC until it happened in the offseason. I’m sure OKC fans wanted the assurance that he’d re-sign but PG would’ve gained nothing by telling them he was going to re-up, since fans would still support him regardless of whether he’s in the last year of his contract or just signed a new one.
When Kawhi was traded to Toronto, most people seemed to think they had no shot of keeping him. But he let the season play out, and I honestly believe him when he said that he was very close to re-signing and it was hard to leave the Raptors. If it wasn’t for the Clippers be willing to throw the farm at OKC to acquire PG, I think Kawhi stays with the Raptors.
Kyrie is never at a loss for words. Maybe his way of trying to appear genuine or smart is to provide as much context/analysis as possible to make sure his audience understands what he’s thinking. The issue with that is that the media will often read into everything a player says and even what they do not say. Giving them more commentary just increases the chances that he’ll slip up and say something that will provide headlines (and ad revenue) for days/weeks.
As Rich showed, Kyrie JUST finished talking about being thankful that his teammates were helping him out. He should’ve stopped there.
Reporters constantly fish for talking points and bait players into revealing things that were said in a private context. Kyrie is just handing them out on a silver platter.

I've never been a huge fan of Kyrie and it is what it is, but I think with this the timing is the biggest problem. If you want to be critical of your teammates that's fine, do or say what you feel is necessary. However, to do after a tough loss where you were the worst player on the court by far for Brooklyn isn't very smart. I mean he was a -29 in an overall close game.
You could go back and watch endless video clips where he is jogging back on D or giving no effort. That's what separates the championship level players from the great players. They give 100% effort and intensity at all times. It's like a workplace your leader should be your hardest worker day in day out. With Kyrie it's not like that.

I don't care much that Kyrie says stuff like this. It was basically a condition of his coming here. Because his WIS score traditionally tanks when he finds himself in front of a mic / keyboard, and nothing has changed about that.
I also don't mind that a portion of the fanbase is going to be upset about this. It's only natural.
What I'm concerned about is whether Kyrie gets blowback from that, and then that affects his attitude towards the Nets. Like, that's all we need.
NyCeEvO's comments make a lot of sense to me. Kyrie is frequently genuine, speculative, and even philosophical when most players are guarded and more practical. I would guess that's down to a mix of goodwill and honesty, but also due to a bit of loneliness and desire to be more understood and appreciated. Something like that, anyway. I suspect Durant is in a similar boat, and that's part of why the two are such good friends.

I take your point, but I also think Kyrie can be tricky to judge on D. In fact he frequently surprises me by how hard he tries to cover his man, including smartly & alertly handling screens, compared to other guards on the team, who sometimes seem to zone out on screens, switches and stuff. Indeed, it can be really startling to me how hard he tries. But at other times, it seems like someone can get a step on him and he'll just stop trying, probably in the expectation that a big will slide over, and that it's better for him to stay nearer halfcourt, ready to initiate the offense. It's a possibility, anyway.
Also I'm not sure it's a good idea to hold some players up to the 'championship two-way player' ideal. Sometimes there are physical and logistical issues which put a ceiling on that. I think it's also different if you're a primary ballhandler. The closer you go to 100% on D, the more it's probably going to impact the team's offense.

So, would you guys prefer that he lie, or that he tells the truth?
Because what he just said is what more than a few people in this very thread have been saying all season. The guys that he DIDN'T mention are names that have been dragged through the gutter on here by several of you all season long.
I don't care. This will be blown out of proportion, but he's not wrong. It is clearly obvious that aside from KD coming back we're going to need something more to help put us over the top. We are 18-22, we are not a good team right now as constructed. Do I think that this team this year can be better and will be better as the season continues? Yes I do, 100%. But we aren't anywhere near the top 5 teams in the league right now and we can't bank on KD to push us there by himself. We'll need more.

The same Kyrie who his teammates said is always the first one in the gym when they show up to the practice facility everyday?

Well said.
I personally don't have an issue with what he said. He didn't throw anyone under the bus directly, he said that the team needs more to be a championship contender and he's not lying about that. Anyone can see it, look at our record injuries be damned. But he did give the talking heads a gem, that's for sure.

No doubt Kyrie stepped on a lot toes. This is where if I'm Sean Marks I tell him "You do your job and I'll do my job".
But the truth is we are one or two pieces away from contending for a title. Even before this happened I suspected we would make a move at the deadline.
