Re: James Johnson Waived, Paves Way For Edwards To Be Added For Playoffs
I feel bad for JJ, but the need for Edwards to be available for the playoffs is paramount.
In reality, the NBA needs to have an IR list so that stuff like this doesn't need to happen, the guy was with us all year so this has to sting. I know people got fed up with Johnson but it wasn't his fault Nash was playing him so much.

This is real. Our prayers have been answered! Just not the "don't play Aldridge" ones.

As much as I was heavily annoyed and have advocated for JJ to be waived. I definitely feel bad we are doing it this late into the season after guys have poured themselves out for this team.
This also should clear the way to re-sign Kessler to a multi year deal with his standard contract. I’d give him a straight up rookie scale kind of contract.

I'm thrilled that JJ was waived.
But doesn't this prove that theres a serious disconnect with the front office and Nash?
Why was he playing so much if we wanted to waive him?
We should have been playing Griffin more. The guy has barely played all season now.
Either way Kessler will need to step him. Good to see.
Also feel bad for Johnson. We should have waived him earlier in the season so he had a chance to play somewhere else.

I think Nash would have waived Blake. Given Blake & LMA gave up a lot of money to join us in order to chase a ring, Marks was not going to dump them without giving them another chance at one. We'll also have Early Bird rights on both, which could (unlikely) become valuable if we need salary filler in a trade.

No ill will towards Johnson but he largely just didn't produce... Whether this means minutes for Blake or Edwards I'm on board (but realistically this probably just means more Aldridge
)

Loved JJ, one of my favourite Nets. If he could at least somewhat hit a 3 consistently, he's a solid NBA rotation player. Although he's good on defense, you almost have to play him as a center on offense which obviously he isn't quite suited for.

Re: James Johnson Waived, Paves Way For Edwards To Be Added For Playoffs
No hate towards JJ the person/vet he is, but he was always an overall NEGATIVE when on the floor, and for some odd reason Nash had a fascination towards playing him important minutes which always led to giving up leads, or losing by even more.
For supposedly a smart defender he kept fouling a lot and played with low IQ both ways.
Front office made the correct choice. Kess is green, but is already more productive than JJ both ways.
I think Nash should give Blake a shot off the bench next to Clax.
We now know LMA is too slow to play 2 bigs, but I think it could work with Blake/Clax.

Was JJ that bad in Brooklyn? He's been a plus defender most of his career and brings a lot of toughness. Seems like those are qualities the Nets would need.

100%.... it does suck for JJ to bounce but Edwards's ability to contribute at the weaker end of the roster where as there isn't any true help really elated his value.
It had to be done.
But like I said before and MDB just wrote it out, the NBA needs to create an IR spot/slot for players who are lost for the season. I can't believe they don't have something like ever before...
Like season ending injuries can't happen after January, what short sighted rationale.

Lets go Edwards... play your ass off and absorb the learning curve as much as possible. Heed the advice and slow it down mentally.... the little positives you can bring will help us tremendously.
Stay late in the gym and get that 3 ball consistent! lets go!

He was JR Smith without the shot. Had occasional good impact games, but made a ton of brain dead plays.

Yes he was.
He was a decent defender. But he was a black hole on offense. And his decision making was terrible. He would constantly make dumb plays or fouls.
I think Bruce Brown and Edwards are both better defenders anyway.

He was always an above average one on one defender who struggled with complex team schemes. Was he still that way, or has time caught up?

My fear is now Nash will lean into playing Aldridge more instead of Griffin.
Aldridge can be useful off the bench if we need offense. But he can't really defend at all.
Blake plays super hard and makes smart plays.

This team is an absolute mess. There's a huge disconnect between the front office and coaches. Just straight up embarrassing to cut a rotation player on Game 80 of the season. We're legit going into the playoffs with rotations that we've never played with before. This is good news but also a perfect example of what's wrong with our team. When the team was fully healthy - Edwards was getting 3 MPG. Why?
Edwards proved in DECEMBER that he should be in the rotation. For whatever reason, we've been super inconsistent with him. Edwards is 6'8 with a 7 foot wing span. He should've been our psuedo-back up PF for months now. He should've been getting big minutes as our only non-KD wing who can defend and shoot. We'd know who he can guard, how he handles pressure, etc. Instead he's a question mark because Nash insisted on playing JJ. Literally every line up is better with Edwards in place of JJ.
Let's see if Nash tries to sabotage the team again by playing LMA + Claxton together again as a response to this.

That's a good way to describe him now. But if you struggle with team schemes - it turns basically anyone into a negative on defense. His toughness also includes A LOT of dumb, untimely fouls.

I say this with NO disrespect ... and I haven't watched more than a dozen Nets games this year ... but do have any complex half court defensive schemes? I see them in drop coverage a lot, and theyll play a little zone, but I dont see much else? Am i wrong?

Right??? that's so confusing..... like why did it end? we were losing with JJ primarily involved so you(one) cannot it was about getting the wins....
Had Edwards been seasoned more so, you damn well know he'd be better off for the run.
Factor in that once again, Edwards getting a bump in contribution has created a steady place in the offense and defense. Would be stupid not to continue what you're finishing the season with.
