Jesus Christ, man. What a dumb mistake. Let him coach out the season first.

I think it's a smart move. Give him job security so the focus can be on development. They can also still fire him whenever they want.
The Udoka ship sailed in November. They weren't going to hire him. An experienced coach worth getting isn't coming into a rebuild/retool situation so you would just have a first-timer and might end up in another Nash situation.

I don't have any issues with this extension. Some cohesion and chemistry is never a bad thing and with some new faces now on board it is the perfect time to offer this extension, because he has done enough to give the staff and players some belief in his ability to lead the team. The extension is warranted in my opinion. Just my .02 cents worth on the topic.

IMHO, its too soon to do this. What happens if we crap out the rest of the way, the positives reviews now will seem foolish.
Way to hasty to make this call on extension. Haven't done sh*t yet. The guy was signed into next season at least so, why now?

Not sure why they needed to do this now and not until the offseason but whatever.
Given how much drama and upheaval happened in the last couple of seasons, they are probably want stability which I get.
While I don't think JV is a great coach, I don't think he's horrific (only average) and I doubt his salary is gonna be very high either.
Gonna hope he proves me wrong, since he seems like a great guy and leader and it would be cool for him to succeed.

Beggers cannot be choosers. Vaugn gets to showcase and learn as the time passses which will give him more experience and new ways of doing things. Nets have to build ORGANICALLY. GS did it, Boston did it, Milwaukee did it, no reason we can't.

Vaughn earned this extension. I dunno what some of yall want the man to do after KD and Kyrie destroyed this place.

Dudes are still pining for Ime, who literally got sh*t canned by the Celtics last week. That should speak volumes.
Grass ain't greener, and I'm tired of drama, perverts and weirdos. Vaughn is a good coach. He earned the job.

Not mad at this at all.
Fans tend to nitpick with coaches. Point out every little thing that doesn't work out and just call them terrible.
Straight up - I think Vaughn has been great since Nash got fired. No complaints from me. And he's faced a ton of ridiculous situations. Dealing with Kyrie. Dealing with Ben. Injuries. KD trade. 4 new starters. I feel like I did when we had Atkinson. We have someone that coaches hard, has the right philosophies, cares about the guys, makes adjustments, etc. Can't ask for any more from a coach.
I'm more cool with this because JV just seems like a great person and leader. His post game interviews. His interactions in the locker room. The stuff he did in the bubble. I'm totally fine with making that guy head coach long term.

Extending vaughn is fine. Once the Udoka thing blew up, and then the trade deadline happened, JV became and obvious and deserving candidate. He also has shown an ability to coach the type of style i think the nets are looking to move toward (just as likely would have been the case with Ime).
let's also not forget that not unlike Ime, JV spent 6 years in SAS between playing and coaching. And he has 3 years of experience as a head coach in Orlando, plus 2 (successful) stretches as interim head coach here.
the job Udoka did last year obviously speaks for itself and off court aside I'd probably prefer him but at the same time he obviously displayed some really poor judgement and Boston hasn't really skipped a beat without him. at this point ime isn't pop any more than jv is.

Yes, I think he is so good with the media. I love his interviews.
I think he earned the extension, congratz. He might not be one of the best coaches in the league, but so far he has been solid. Night and day to Nash.

Speaking of drama, Kyrie cannot get his mind off of the Nets. It's like the girl who got ditched and it now spewing venom. Kyrie needs to seriously move on and stop lying to the world about how he never wanted to be here. He knows he still wants his contract in Brooklyn. Had he behaved and was trust worthy, he would have had it.

coach's salary doesn't count towards the cap.
joe tsai has alot of money.
if it doesn't work out with vaughn, they can fire him w/o any bother.
seems to me the vaughn helped stabalize the culture of the team. probably need a culture rebuild long term so may as well try it with him.

I don't love the move. Vaughn is an ok coach. Not the worst, but certainly not among the elite either. Survey the landscape in the off-season and then settle. Put a call in to Snyder first. There was no need to lock him up that long or this soon.
I don't know that this shuts the door on Udoka. If he fails to get a HC offer, I could see him back to as an assistant to try to rehab his reputation.

It appears that this move may be to signal that we are going to try to get back to building a strong culture like we had before. Having JV locked up shows a commitment at the top. We already have Sean Marks here for a long time. I think it signals the days of "Get rich quick" are over and we are going to try to make smart decisions with quality people throughout the organization..

He probably doesn't want to be in Dallas. Idgaf what he does anymore though, he's persona non grata here.

What's the concern? We aren't contending, and Vaughn has proved he's a good coach and communicator. I see zero reason as to why the Nets should have him hanging over a tree limb in favor of someone outside the organization.
The have had a lot of problems. Vaughn was not one of them. He's the right coach for this young roster.

I agree with most commenters here.
Theoretically JV could have been upgraded in the offseason, but unless it was a slam-dunk candidate, it could also have backfired in terms of team culture & continuity. Because to me, Jacques is also symbolic as the guy who pulled the team together in a dark hour and weathered the storms of various star-tantrums.
Maybe he's not the long-term guy, but I fear it would have been a downright heartless look to 86 him this offseason. Very little is lost by giving him a formal shot of approval like this, and it can only help strengthen the situation and increase buy-in.
I'm frankly excited about this version of the team. Other than the unfortunate losses of Kenny & Fro, these Nets are arguably in a better situation than they were before KD & KI came along, with a higher ceiling and more flexibility. Not to mention, Marks has no doubt learned some painful lessons from his first seven years on the job (it's three days past his hiring anniversary), and at the end of the day, that's a good thing for us.
