Trade SZN: Are the Nets Kingmaker, or Overplayed?

Post#1 » by ecuhus1981 » Mon Dec 2, 2024 4:35 am

I feel like this NBA trade market is going to revolve around us. We seem to have the highest concentration of useful role playing veterans on the market, with either short or commensurate salary for their production. If you're a challenger looking to contend, or a contender trying to make sure challengers don't get the missing piece to their puzzle, you are going to call us for Johnson, DFS or Schröder before asking other rebuilding teams. Does all this allow us to juice a team for a high price???

Or, does our need to offload veterans and embrace the Tank, mean that we're going to run out of time and start short-selling players to ensure losses and ping pong balls for the NBA draft lottery?

I'll be interested to see how Sean plays it. What do you think will happen?

Really hard to say. Best guess is that it is another out of nowhere move sort of like how we got Schroder last season.

I got a feeling Shake Milton might get moved for some reason.

Cam J has already said a few times he knows how the NBA business goes and that he pretty much is ready to pack his suitcase. He has performed above expectations and we could sell high on him. But my gut is telling me he gets moved in the off season.

Shake is a very logical trade candidate. He makes very little, so it's easy for any team to match salary. The Nets also have very little breathing room under the tax, so it's currently difficult to make deals and stay under. He could be given to a team with space or a TPE for free to enable a larger deal.

They’re set to have $60 million to spend in the summer, and while Marks values flexibility above all else and could punt the space into 2026 free agency if need be, the preference is to keep the rebuild short.

“Their reset will be around signing a max free agent and draft picks,” said the league source. “They for sure won’t tank multiple years. It’s going to be a one-year reset.”

In free agency, depending on other moves before the deadline, the Nets could hit the offseason with between $40 and $80 million in cap space. The higher end of that range would be enough to add Butler and other players to try to vault Brooklyn back into contention.

We are probably going to be bombarded with possible trade scenarios this trade season. So far there is not one I am remotely interested in for us.

Looks like dominos going to start falling tomorrow. Think this could be straight up for Melton as salary matching and pick(s), or maybe Kuminga involved?

Edit:

Are they giving us 3 SRP’s and us sending them 1 of our SRP’s?

Nice trade, holding out for a 1st rounder would have risked injury and getting more wins.

1 down, Cam and DFS to go.

Need to see the picks, but I'm assuming the pick we're sending out is the worst of the 4, or at worst an earlier equivalent to one of theirs, e.g. deferring our Miami 2nd for a future 2nd. Picks going both ways could also hint at this being a piece of a larger trade, similar to how the acquisitions of Brown and Shamet leaked out separately, but ended up part of a combined deal.

Another interesting tidbit from Keith Smith is that if the deal is finalized by the 15th, apparently Melton could be aggregated with other salary in a future deal.

Opens up more playing time for Keon Johnson and Tyrese Martin and possibly Killian Hayes.
