Looking Back, Did We Screw Up?

Now when i look back at it, did we screw up in 04-05. Now i know it was the popular move (even though he wan't and isn't the right fit for the teams we had in place) at the time but did we screw up making the trade for Carter? I mean i've always believed this that if you don't win it all or make a stride towards winning it all, then whats the point wouldn't you rather have a good draft pick to build for the future. We made the Carter trade and avoided the lottery just to get trounced in the first round and to draft antoine wright with our pick.
think about it, we were a lottery bound team before the trade. If we didn't make the trade we would've likely had a top 10 pick. Meaning if we were the 10th worst team we would've gotten yes, Andrew Bynum or if we were worse we could've gotten marvin williams, deron williams or chris paul. The point is, we would be a better team overall. Not to mention what those picks could've gotten us that we traded for him (btw what did they end up becoming?) Which would've made it easier to start a rebuilding effort then or we would've had another nice core.
It just seems to me that we've been putting off rebuilding for too long and it's finally clear that we should start but we're in a tough position now.
So looking back, are you glad/mad that we traded for Carter and made the playoffs but with nothing to show for it and put off the rebuilding effort or what?
