DIOP rental costs

If I understand the CBA right, Diop can be traded as an individual player in the next week. After that, he can't be traded until next season due to the trade deadline. Looking at the situation from outside NJ, NJ is going nowhere in the playoffs - even if everyone adapts to a new system instantly, with this trade they aren't taking BOS or DET. If Harris as PG needs some time to adapt to a new system means they likely miss the Playoffs altogether. Diop is a UFA this summer. This would leave NJ with Diop's Bird Rights and that's all (from Diop of course, they'd keep Harris and the rest). Would NJ be willing to rent out Diop for the rest of the Season (effectively trading his bird rights, and his performance for the rest of the year for some future assets)?

As Diop can only be traded as an individual, I can't see NJ getting much cap relief (although a something might be done with parallel deals like the Antoine Wright and Kidd deals). Presumably therefore you'd be looking for picks, cash or young talent back...

How much would you want for Diop. Would you accept something like:

SA trades Elson, Raptors 2008 2nd round pick, cash (to cover the pro-rated salary difference and any lux tax associated).
NJ Trades Diop

thats a horrible trade for nj. diop still has value as a young, defensive minded center with potential. to trade him for a journeyman and a late 2nd rounder is absurd.

I trade Diop and one of the Mavs first for Tiago Splitter and filler from Spurs.

He's a young, defensive minded center, who is a UFA next season. The only thing you get for trading him is the rest of this season, and the ability to sign him with Bird right money (ie. you can go above cap w/o using your MLE). IF he doesn't sign a contract somewhere else; you have no right to match. He's the definition of a rent-a-player until he signs a new contract... Rent-a-players aren't worth much.

I'm pretty sure SA thinks that that is too much. They like Splitter. How about

Diop, 2010 DAL 1st
for
Elson (the filler), 08 SAN 1st

I don't like.

I would give the 2 Dallas 1st and Diop for Splitter and filler.

I'm from Brazil and i know how good is Splitter.

Yeah, Splitter is a lottery level talent; he shouldn't have fallen that far last year. Can't see SA doing it, if you think Splitter is the price; they just don't get lottery level talent that often... They can't give it up for a rental.

If Diop works well in NJ he might be more long term thing. To trade him for a 2nd rounder and a late one at that and a fringe nba player is not worth it.

Agreed. I think we would make a pitch for him, possibly giving him above MLE $. Krstic's deal shouldn't need to be nearly as high as once thought, so we could secure both 7-footers long-term and have a nice young foursome with Sean and Josh.

Not sure how wise or feasible it is to sign Diop long term. This team has a major need at the wing and that's before taking into account the fact that Carter could be elsewhere next year. I kind of doubt that the money is there for a wing and Diop.

Wing players and not expensive. There is plenty of money to go after a guy like Barnes or Petrius and sign Diop.

BTW, I'm not even a Nets fan.

Would you take something like Ryan Hollins (more of an athletic big in his 2nd season) and Othella Harrington (to make the contracts work) for Desagana Diop?
