Are there any protections on them? I hope they're both unprotected.
Edit: Also, who do you think we can get with this years first. I forgot where I read it but it said we could package that with our own pick (assuming we stay on the cusp of a playoff spot) and end up with a top 10 pick

This year's first probably light protection, top 5-top 10. For sure the 2010 pick is lottery protected.
When Cuban traded for DAmpier and Nash, he was worried he didn't have protection on the pick that went to GS, so I don't think he'll make that mistake again.

can some explain to me what unprotected and protected draft picks mean?

For instance, in 2010 if the Mavs are pretty bad and end up in the lottery, and the pick is lottery protected then Mavs keep the pick, and the pick is defaulted for the next year (usually the protection decreases as the years increase). Essentially, NJ would get the Mav's 2011 pick since they wouldn't have gotten the 2010 pick.
so in 2011 it might be top 10, in 2012 top 5 and sometimes it will either go unprotected, turn into a second rounder to consumate the deal, or turn into cash.
Unprotected means it doesn't matter what position the pick is at, the other team gets it.

I don't think we are done making moves after the Kidd deal.
On top of this, I'm sure with Harris and Kidd's bad attitude out of the locker room, and Curly, Boone and SWat's constant improvement we are not even close to out of the playoffs.
If we get Mike Miller we get even better.
That said, if we do miss the playoffs, and trade Wright for a 2nd rounder we could honestly move up to a top 5 pick easily with the combo of the 2 Dallas picks, our lotto pick and both 2nd rounders.
I mean if we wind up lotto, unless wee get extremely lucky we could wind up between 10-14.
That combined with 2 more 1st rounders, one from this year, one of the better 2nd rounders and another 2nd rounder, maybe combined with a guy like Marcus Williams could easily net us a t0p 5 pick if someone we loved was still available.
We could also package all these picks with RJ and filler for a legit big, although highly doubtful.

Usually when a team trades multiple picks, the first one is always unprotected (not that it matters anyway). The second one might be protected but I doubt it. It wouldn't make sense for Dallas to push their owed picks further back into what will likely be a rebuilding period.

Wouldn't they announce whether the picks were protected or not? As far as my knowledge goes, neither of the picks are protected.

I hope they're protected. They become less and less protected with each year if I'm correct.

ESPN reported 2008 is lotto protected, 2010 has no restrictions.

Wonder why the 2008 one would be lottery protected. Dallas isn't likely to be in the lottery this summer.

That cant be right. Suppose some catastrophe happens to Dallas and they end up in the lottery. That would mean they could end up giving away first rounders in 2 consecutive years, 2009 and 2010 which would violate the Ted Stepien rule.
