why are we so obsesed with KVH, arent there other FAs that the Mavs can sign for 4 mil and trade? I know the Mavs have the rights to KVH, but why?

The Mavs still had bird rights on Van Horn, he wasn't really a "free" agent. He was still on the Mavs' roster so to speak so all they needed to do is call him up and have him sign. You can't sign and trade a random free agent right in the middle of the season I believe.

There were a few other guys who the Mavs still had the rights to (Maxwell) however KVH was the one who played most recently and would draw the least scrutiny. I think had KVH passed on the offer they might have gone to someone else but it is hard to know for sure.
