Offseason Free Agents

Post#1 » by Preludepunk27 » Fri Apr 4, 2008 3:30 pm

Yeah I haven't been to the forum in a long time so I just want to say hi to the new kids first. I usually only pop in now at the end of the season then disappear again about a month after the draft.

Just curious to see what who you guys would look into picking up in free agency. Make a list of players you feel we could realistically get. My list, I really don't like putting restricted guys on there but if you must, that's cool. Here is mine:

1. Ryan Gomes - Was always impressed with this guy. Is solid on a bad team, but honestly think he's an upgrade from Boki (even though I love the guy). I'm totally comfortable with him taking over if RJ ever went down/got trade (knocking on wood as we speak)

2. Tyronn Lue - I just like how he plays the game. Obviously I'd only be interested in him if we traded Marcus over the summer but I think he's got a nice shot, is an above average defender for his size and has been on believe he'd bring similar energy that Harris brings so we wouldn't miss a beat when Harris needs a blow. He's not going to command a lot of money and I think he's a great buy if we can get him.

Honestly, I can't think of many more players. I wouldn't mind resigning Diop. There are not a lot of serviceable big man this offseason in my opinion plus we got Krstic, Stro, SWill, and Boone still locked up. Granted Krstic has the most polished offensive game out of all of them, It'd be nice to add one more with offensive skills to spread the floor but everyone I can think of is restricted or will take a nice contract to get him.

Just curious to see what all of you are thinking.

This is what the Nets should do or try to
- Look if its possible to aquire a young scoring big like Kaman or Bogut per trade with the assets we have
- Maybe gamble on J.O or Brand if you don't have to overpay for them in a trade
- Try to get rid of Swift and Hassel in these trades , they're just useless
- Look if you're able to trade RJ or Vince for young talent , picks and/or capspace if not don't do it
- Draft a Swingmen able to contribute right away coming off the bench or may even start if a trade happens
- Look to resign Boki and Diop and Curly for as cheap as possible if can't really get a major trade ( Curly HAS to come back if you can't get another big )
- If you can't sign Boki or Diop try to get a replacement in FA
- sign a new 3rd stringer to replace the DA who's going to retire

Eduardo Najera
Jarvis Hayes
Mickael Pietrus
Kareem Rush
Fred Jones
Keyon Dooling
Gordan Giricek
Roger Mason
James Jones (player option)

I'll provide an analysis of why I chose tohse guys later. For now I'm off to go balling.

But in all honesty when you look at the above list there could be a number of decent wing options out there this summer.

On the flipside it's possible that the Nets don't bother signing any of those guys if they draft a wing player with their pick or a good one falls to them with the Mavericks pick.

Let Boki and either Diop or Nenad walk and pick up Pietrus

I personally think Pietrus is looking for a greater role then he has right now in Golden State . I'm not sure he's satisfied with coming off the bench .

And you can't let Nenad walk if you don't get another big able to score or you don't get much scoring from your bigs at all .

I let Boki walk before Krstic or Diop. I think those two must be retained.

We need someone that can hit open jumpshots since we will be stuck using this same god awful system on offense. Among the names listed, who can be counted on to knock down those wide open j's?

All of the players I listed can knock down the 3, Eduardo Najera didn't add a 3-point shot to his game until this year though so it's hard to say whether his 3-point shot is legit or not he's shooting 37% from 3-point range this year though...

I'd take kareem rush he's a good shooter.
We deff need to keep Nenad. I thought about it and I'd let Diop go before Boki but I wouldn't go overboard with Boki's price.

You know what I change my mind WE HAVE TO AT LEAST TRY TO SIGN THE FOLLOWING PLAYERS

Eddie House- we foolishly let him go for a terrible terrible signing in Magloire I think we should offer 1m more than whatever Boston offers him in order to finish things the way they were meant to be finished.

James Posey- the guy is just an awesome all around bench player a must for our goal to rebuild the bench

And as far as Boki, Nenad and Diop go.....

Sign Nenad at a good price (not a redicolous price but a sane one).
Try to sign Diop but let him go if he wants to much money.
Let Boki go wherever he wants to.

And why exactly should these guys sign with us unless we completely overpay them ? Boston is a serious Championship contender and we're a team in transition .

Free agency is for good teams.

Our draft Pick / trade activities this offseason will pretty much determine what kind of free Agents we're able to sign .

Who knows whats going to happen this offseason all i know there's going to be changes soon .

Here are the basic stats for the players I listed in my other past, Giricek's numbers are better if you just look at his numbers in 2007-2008 when he was with Phoenix (which I didn't include).

I like Najera. Dooling. Pietrus.

All energy guys with some offense.

Najera may be too similar to Boone and Sean.

Dooling can replace Armstrong. And he'd get time, seeing how Frank loves to go small.

I think Carlos Delfino's a free agent I'd love to sign him.
Gordon Giricek sounds good at shooting guard as well he'll provide perimeter shooting let Boki go.
I got the burner-Kevin Durant

Cream rises to the top-Nic Claxton

Giricek is worse then Boki on D and as consistent on O ( not at all ) .

No way i let Boki go for Giricek.

Najera would be nice because his relentless energy is just what this team needs but I'm not entirely sold on the offensive side of his game.

I have a feeling thoug that this will all just be a moot point though, the Nets are probably going to draft a swingman with their pick.
