Nets Name owned by state of new jersey?

Post#1 » by Orange_Blooded » Sun May 11, 2008 1:33 am

Hello Nets fans. Suns Fan here, no D'antoni talk please, I miss him already :( haha.

Anyways, I heard from a guy on another site that the state of new jersey owns the rights to the 'nets' name and when they move to Brooklyn the name will have to be changed. He didn't offer any sources and after a not so diligent search I found nothing so I thought I post here. I know the old ABA team in NY was called the nets so it seems unlikely to me to be true but you guys would know best.

Also It would seem to me whoever owned the team would own the name if a name could even be owned. After all how many wildcats, panthers, kings, ect are there. But then again the 'nets' is more of a unique name than all of those.

And for what its worth he claims the name will be th Knights, has anyone else heard of this? If this is the case it would be tragic to all basketball fans as the nets is one of the best names ever for a team in my opinion.

i dont think a state can own a team name.. ive never heard of that before.. and like you said, they were the New York Nets in the ABA..

thatd be pretty cool though if they changed the name to the Knights.. Knight is my last name.

Hard to believe considering Ratner already trademarked Brooklyn Nets and New York Nets.

I really wouldn't mind either. Brooklyn for variety and to not confuse anyone. New York Nets is cool though as a throwback to the Dr. J days.

I guess you've never heard of the Cleveland Browns then.

I don't think Ohio owned the name, I believe it was a decision made by the NFL to reserve the name so the browns could return to Cleveland.

Is it even a done deal that the Nets would move to Brooklyn? I have read that a move to Brooklyn isn't 100% certain anymore due to legal issues.
