Mavs looking to Trade for a Pick

The Mavericks don't have a first round pick in this month's draft but they are looking to acquire one, according to The Dallas Morning News.

"I don't think there's any doubt that we'll try," new coach Rick Carlisle said. "But first-round picks this time of year, everybody gets enamored with them. Unless they have multiples, they're not that interested in giving them up. But you know Mark [Cuban] is going to be aggressive."

Dallas is also looking to retain free agent Devean George.

"I like him as a player," Carlisle said. Re-signing George "is certainly something we're going to aggressively explore. He can do some things that we need."

I'd trade #21 for Brandon Bass definitely maybe even #10 depending on who's left in the lottery.

Seeing as we'll most likely draft a a BIG with the 10th, I wouldn't even trade the 21st, not when we need depth at the 2 and 3. 21 belongs to budinger or rush all the way.

I personally feel that the Nets should look to free agency for the two or three. I think something else would have to be included in this deal though because I think a Rush or a Budinger may turn out better than Bass.

All in all, if there was more included in this deal, I would go for it in a second. I like Bass and believe that he is an emerging big man in this league. The Nets could use him off the bench.

Theres actually a good chance we take gallnari at 10, which would mean we need a big at 21, and if this happens bass is better than any of the bigs at 21, so i would make the deal if it plays out like this

If Gallinari drops to us at 10 I'm gonna pray I eat my words (see another thread for that explanation) and have Speights fall to #21. That'd be like the greatest draft in years for us.

Galinari at 10 and they trade 21 and cash for Brandon Bass.
With the second rounder we draft the best player available that's a great draft.

Trading their own 21 back to them...Thorn would be the devil. He's a robber right now, but come on...he's not Kupchak.

The 21st pick and Richard Jefferson for Josh Howard.

RJ is a better player then Howard is ....

If the mavericks move him (which I'm not thinking they will anymore), they'll get close to dollar for dollar for him even with his "I smoke weed in the offseason comment" but RJ/#21 is too much for him. I HIGHLY doubt Cuban is answering the phone for Thorn anyway right now. Until Kidd and the Mavs play well together, I'm pretty sure our phones are blocked from Maverick headquarters.

After Beasley, Love and Arthur, Bass will probrably be better than any other big in this draft.

He could be better then all the bigs in this draft, probrably not though.

Bass, if given a starting job at the 4 with big minutes and a lot of touches could be a very succesful PF in this league.

In Dallas he comes off the bench because you need a true 5 in their with Dirk and they need a legit post up and scoring option/spark off the bench.

By the way, I may eat my words, but I don't see all the hype being deserved that Speights is getting.
I don't see him being much more then a Reggie Evans type, and I am not talking about him coming and playing that well from the jump either.

After Love and Arthur come off the boards there really aren't many big men that wow me in this draft.
There are definitely some quality looking prospects, but none any better or even as good as the 3 young bigs we already have assuming we resign Curly.

On the other hand there are numerous SG/SF prospects that look like they have all the makings of Allstars or at least consistent starters ala a healthy Q Rich or maybe a younger Morris Peterson or a Tashaun Prince.

Wow I haven't heard that assessment ever about him. Are you sure you're watching the same player. Considering...Speights actually has an offensive game. The guy is 19, has a decent inside out game, likes playing with his back to the basket but can step out for the midrange. My only knock on him is I think he's a little too soft right now defensively. With all that said, that sounds nothing like Reggie Evans. That comparison flabbergasts me.

I know I'm higher on the kid than most but don't sell the kid short.

Would the pieces of Howard/Stack/ SnT George work for the combo of

RJ/ either first rounder/ and SnT Diop

When will the majority of fans figure out that you can't include other players in a S&T. George cannot be packaged with any other player/pick.

Even though I think we could find a decent deal with the focal points being RJ/Howard, I seriously don't think that Cuban is taking any calls from Thorn or Kiki until the Kidd deal starts paying him dividends.

Clearly players can be included in a s&t, see Keith Van Horn being in the Kidd trade.

Just forget about that doubt they'll answer any calls stuff, that's just silly...

What do you think would be a deal or deals that could work?

All depends if your organization wants to pay two guarantee contracts. I say they do considering the team has holes and needs some future to build around. Bass won't land my Mavericks the 10th overall pick, but our hands will be open for it to happen, and I doubt Mark Cuban moves him for the 2st overall pick. It'd probably need to be a filler for the 21st, so once again, it depends on your ownership and if they want to pay two guarantee contracts.

Do some more research. This was actually a separate transaction from the Kidd deal actually. At least that's what Dave D'Alessando cleared up for me.
