My Carter to the Mavs Trade

Post#1 » by Chris24 » Thu Jul 17, 2008 2:14 am

Hey - what do you think of this trade -

Nets Trade Vince Carter and Trenton Hassell to Dallas for Josh Howard and Jerry Stackhouse

Why the Nets do it - this trade would give the Nets maximum flexibility in the summer of 2010 while still being able to replace Vince with an all star caliber swingman. Stackhouse is an expiring deal, and he can at least score plenty, which we would need with Vince gone. Howard is signed for 2 more years, with a TEAM option for 2010, for about 10 million. This would be perfect for the Nets. If for whatever reason, they think they can entice Lebron AND another big name FA, they can decline Howard's option. Or they can pick up the option and increase their cap space to go after Lebron (Howard's 10 million 2010 contract is 7 million less than Carter's 17 million he is supposed to get in 2010. A 30 year old Howard may very well be better than a 34 year old Carter anyway.) In the interim, they get younger with Howard, and they could still be competitive with Stackhouse and Howard the next 2 years. Nets roster would look like:

PG: Harris M.Williams
SG: Stackhouse Hayes
SF: Howard Najera
PF: Jianlian Boone
C Lopez Krstic Williams

Why the Mavs do it - Kidd and Howard did not exactly mesh well last yr. Maybe their styles just don't mix. There have been rumors Mavs are open to trade Howard, and they already tried to dump Stackhouse on us through a Diop sign and trade. There is no doubt the Mavs are in a win now mode, with Kidd arguably significantly past his prime, and with Nowitzki perhaps nearing the end of his prime. Carter should give them a boost and make them better. Cuban is not shy of bold moves and seemingly has empty pockets so the near 50 million he will owe Carter should not scare him off. The Mavs lineup would be stacked to for championship competition perhaps for two years. After that, their window would likely be shut. The Mavs would look like:

PG: Kidd Barea
SG: Terry Wright
SF: Carter Green
PF: Nowitzki Bass
C: Dampier Diop

What do you all think of this trade?

I also thought of one more thing to add. Lets say the Nets' big plan is to get 2 big name free agents in the summer of 2010. They can still pick up Howard's 2010 option. So many teams are trying to gain cap space for that summer, but not all of them are going to be able to snag an impact free agent. For these teams with cap space but no one to spend it on, the Nets can trade them Howard as a consolation prize without the Nets needing to take a big contract back. In return for Howard, a young 30 year old all star caliber player, we can certainly demand a talented, young and cheap asset at a position of need to round out our squad.

I would of said yes... but then I realized Josh Howard is the same age as Tracy McGrady.

Its something to consider but I don't think either team would rush to do this.

I've said it a couple times. I don't think Mark Cuban is answering our phone calls until the Kidd trade starts paying dividends.

It sounds good to me. It would put us in a better position in the summer of 2010. I don't think there would be any love lost for Howard down in Dallas with his antics lately. Vince could be a piece that really does put them over the top if the chemistry works out. I'd like to see what happened in Miami happen in Dallas. Plus the option on Howard contract is another incentive.

It's a good trade on it's surface for both teams

but with Howard's poor play at the end of the season / his pot remarks , he may not be the type of "vet" the Nets wants helping to lead their young core - that being said maybe being paired up with his best friend in Devin Harris might go along ways to fixing Howard. I liked the early career Howard who had a knack for the ball off the offensive glass, took it more to the rim & played solid D. He's kinda turned into a jumpshooter (consider 79% of his offense was jumpshots, VC was 67%).

on the other hand does Kidd want anything to do with VC again (or vice-versa). Dallas is in win now mode & VC does help there but at the end at NJ Kidd seemed to throw VC under the bus and as far as I know Kidd still hasn't got his contract extension and does VC want to go through that kind of locker room again (of course that shouldn't play into Nets thinking but just a sidenote to it all).

It's not a bad trade for the Nets since Howard is young / salary fits their needs ... but it would have to be for the "old version" Howard and not the new not effective one that was annoying Mav's fans last year.

Edit: Personally other than the very unlikely return to the Raptors I'd rather see VC stay a Nets player and help out the young kids but Dallas would be nice for VC's career (pick & roll with Dirk ain't bad..)

Please Kidd would veto this trade in a heart beat.

He wont be able to handle two soft players.

And LIke prelude said, Cuban checks his caller ID for Thorn and Kiki.

We could not get Howard in the JKidd deal, what makes you think we can get him for VC?

I don't want that pot head near this young impressionable team, pass.

I think Howard is very overrated, but considering the "perceived value" and contracts of him and Carter this is a trade I'd make with the intentions to immediately send Howard to a 3rd team.

That said, after the clashes Carter and Kidd had in NJ, I can't see any chance of Dallas wanting a reunion. Also, does a trio of Kidd, Terry and Carter have enough size to work defensively for the Mavs?

Only teams I see Vince possibly going to would be a playoff team. With that said, the only teams I can see are Orlando where we get Hedo/youngins, Spurs for something of value I'm too lazy to think about now, Clippers for expirings and Thornton or Gordon, Chicago for Deng/Thabo, and maybe the pistons for Tayshaun/filler. But again, I think Vince will need to go in a 3 team deal. We'll be more than likely taking in more players by moving him so we'd have to find a 3rd team to unload 2-3 guys on. Even if the Nets planned on trading Vince...which they're not...it'd be extremely difficult.
