A week ago, the Nets contacted the Atlanta Hawks in an attempt to get involved in a sign-and-trade sweepstakes for restricted free agent Josh Smith, but according to one NBA general manager, the Nets "don't have the stuff that really fits" to pull off a deal.

Hey at least they took a shot even if it was a long shot which is all I asked for. But honestly, are you telling me that a package of Stro with either Sean Williams or Josh Boone with a few draft picks (we potentially have 5 over the next 3 years) isn't enticing? I think that the Hawks tasted blood last year when they made the playoffs and don't want to settle for anything less. Too bad they'll be an 8 seed again if they get in. Granted I shouldn't talk since we're a lottery team.

I wouldn't be shocked if this leaked simply for the purpose of public relations. Obviously the Nets know they don't have anything that makes sense for the ATL.

Reminds me of the rumors that the Cavs were interested in a sign and trade for Monta Ellis, complete hogwash and nothing but public relations imo.

josh smith should be no where near the nets plans because that would hurt the plans to go for lbj in 2010 unless the nets can free up alot of cap space in the process

It wouldn't hurt the cap plans if you shipped Carter out of town in a separate deal. If the goal is 2010, I don't think it's any doubt who NJ would be better off with Smith over Carter.

I'm not doubting the Nets had little to no shot at Smith (Smith is still only 22), but I think it's safe to say the Nets had a heck of a lot more to offer ATL for Smith than the Cavs did to Golden State for Ellis.

Meh Josh Smith is quite overated in my opinion.
People keep pointing out "ZOMG ATL made the playoffs last year" well dude F that they won only 36 or 37 games and made it because the Nets and the Bulls were redicolously under- acheiving/ got backstabed by their captain.

From the ATL perspective why is it taking so long to get Smith deal done. As dysfunctional as it appear this has to be the easiest decision.

But kudos to mgmt for trying.

I disagree with your point.

The guy isnt overrated. This has nothing to do with Hawks making the playoffs. The guy does everything. He is a better version of K-Mart without a HOF PG.

Stop with the Kidd BS. We sucked. Ok everyone one this team is suppose to be a professional. If you cant handle it, you arent a NBA player. You are getting paid to play.

Did Kobe's team let the fact Kobe didnt want to be there effect their game? Stop the BS. Bynum was having a turn around season before he got hurt. Remember Kobe wanted him gone. Kidd still had a lot of triple doubles. No one else stepped up.

Yeah I always enjoyed the talk that Kidd gave up on us when he still was averaging like a triple double every 8-10 games. He didn't give up on us on the actual basketball court. He gave up on the franchise being able to compete and demanded out. Kidd has too much pride to roll over on the basketball court though so you can't rip him for that.

I really can't say anything bad about Kidd. I'm jaded in that it's the end of the Nets best era in like 20 years, but it was bound to happen sooner or later. Sucks it didn't happen on better terms, but I can't blame the guy for wanting the best chance for a title near the end of his career.

I'm sure they tried a sign and trade with Krstic involved as well. And Al Horford was the best player on the Hawks last year.

With the lost of Childress, the hawks has taken a step back. They have to sign Smith!!!!! Because of his age he is going to be a top 20 player.

^ I agree. No way they dont match offers. Unless Smith says I want out and I want to go to ..... I dont see the Hawks not keeping him.

Atlanta's got a funky way of handling business.
They haven't re-signed Smith for what reason I don't understand.

Childress was on PTI today and said part of the reason he went to europe was the Hawks were slow to signing players, Josh Smith.
He said he talked to his teamates and explained he wanted to get a deal doon as soon as possible.
The Hawks have a boneheaded organization they'll probably end up losing he and Josh Smith for no reason.

Years ago they fired some people bc they opposed signing J Johnson something's not right down there.

Hell didn't they even buy out an owner because one owner refused to send a package for Joe Johnson because it included Boris Diaw?

^Yeah some people say they do things backwards in the deep south. My opinion is Stern needs to step in that organization doesn't know what they're doing.

They just made the playoffs for the first time in years now they don't want to re-sign they're players.
Trading for Mike Bibby was just to make the playoffs last year and that's it?
