New Jersey Nets: Worst off-season ever?

I'm sorry to come to your board and be a little negative... But this Nets offseason has been atrocious. You lost Boki & Kristic, you drafted two great white hypes, traded your most productive player for a total project... All in the HOPE that LeBron wants to join this bunch of busts in 2010?

I dunno, I really hope i'm wrong here, but I think New Jersey is headed for a 25 win season tops.

So what do you propose??

Stay in mediocrity for the next 4 years with RJ and VC. 2 players who haven't done much when paired together. We still own krstic's rights so whenever he decides to come back, which he will, we have first dibbs.

Boki isn't a big loss, he's easily replaceable and i'm pretty sure najera/hayes will be able to match and even surpass his production.

You can't criticize a pick until they actual play an NBA game.

I rather win 25 next year and hope to win 50+ in a few years then string along 4 years of 30-35 win seasons.

So what? Both were horrible last season. Krstic is still coming off the ACL injury. We retain his rights overseas if he wants to come back next year.

you drafted two great white hypes

I'm not high on either first round pick, but this entire board knows I never judge a player yet to play an official NBA second yet. You should learn.

Harris, VC, RJ = Mediocrity with salary cap hell for the next four years. First round exits, MLE guys in the offseason putting us further in salary cap doom, and middle of the pack draft talent. No way we win a championship with that team. It was clearly time to rebuild, especially after trading Kidd. We gave RJ the number 1 scoring option last year and our team faltered. We were definitely overpaying him, especially with him not being able to coexist with VC. He's been a great third star and number 2 scoring option on this team. We just couldn't count on him to be more.

I bet you're one of the many basing Yi on how he's played in the Olympics. Guess you should look at guys like Yao, Calderon, Rubio, etc. See how flawed that logic is? Yeah...

I couldn't care less about the amount of wins with a team in rebuilding. What matters most this year (and possibly next) is player progression. Get a high pick, develop that guy along with the rest of the team, get rid of big contracts, entice FAs with offering whatever amount of money they want or trade for a team of all great young talent like Portland.

Honestly, if you knew ANYTHING about the Nets, you'd know the summer we lost KMart was much worse than this. Look at that roster from the 2004-2005 season. I laugh my ass off all the time thinking about our starting 5. If we didn't land the steal of the century with Vince, we would have been a #1 pick that year without a doubt. This year we're probably top 5 in chances for the lottery...so, yes it's still sad, but we're a more balanced team and won't fair as bad as that team would have done if we didn't land Vince.

Know a thing or two about a team before you even talk about them OK?

To be honest if the Nets can piece together 25 games I will be satisfied with the season ...

But to address your points, Bostjan Nachbar wasn't that big of a loss I liked watching him play but he was so damn erratic that you never knew if you could count on him. I'm one of the few that thinks Krstic will eventually return to form but I actually like the situation that the Nets are in now, if he doesn't get healthy then good riddance if he shows promise once again then the Nets still own his rights and he'll be a restricted free agent whenever he decides to return to the NBA.

As for the Jefferson trade... The way I see it is:

1. Jefferson had to be traded (his ego was starting to swell)
2. The Nets didn't trade Jefferson for Yi. They traded Jefferson to shed his contract for a soon to be expiring one, and a prospect in the process.

Trading Jefferson had more with the Nets wanting to get out of his contract than acquiring Yi Jianlian.

In regards to the Nets draft choices... The only other alternative to Brook Lopez that the Nets should have contemplated was Jerryd Bayless, and while I'll admit I'm more of a Bayless than Lopez fan, there are plenty of talented guards in every draft so the Nets will get a shot at some of them in the next few drafts when they're bound to have a lottery pick. (No comment on Ryan Anderson, but you also forgot to mention that the Nets drafted CDR).

Wow, talk about someone who doesn't have a clue.

Boki and Krstic are not a loss. Both were horrible last season and neither one were worth paying what those European teams are paying them. You must not have seen a single minute of either one of them stinking up the gym or playing soft last season.

Yeah we did Trade RJ for a project and cap room, but we werent going anywhere with RJ and frankly it was time for him to go because he had sacrified his overall game for scoring. If I had to pick between RJ and VC, i go with VC, because we have him signed here for a decent price, he is a superior all around player, and last season after Kidd left he took responsibility for this team and played like he gave a damn. RJ did too to a point, but his lack of defense was so stunning that something had to be done.

Also, from the FAs we brought in, this is actually one of Rod Thorn's better offseasons as we have guys now that will compete, defend, and hit open jumpshots, something Thorn failed to bring in the last few offseasons

P.S. Only fools are falling for the "Lebron in 2010!!!! omgggg" stuff. Either way, we are rebuilding, and if we can get 25-30 wins out of this group i'd be shocked, especially since it looks like no other moves are on the horizon for us.

Enjoy your team, we'll worry about ours. Thanks.

^^^ All good points

Yeah he should be more worried about the fact Chris Paul (top 5 favorite player of mine in the league so I'm not completely bashing) absolutely DISAPPEARED in the 4th quarter of game 7 against the Spurs. A lot of people are giving Pargo a lot of heat for trying to take over the game in the 4th and complaining he didn't give it to Paul. The thing is, Paul backed down from a "dare to be great" situation. You're the superstar on the team...YOU GO TAKE THE BALL AND MAKE THE PLAYS.

Only reason I give him a free pass is that he's young, it was his first time in the playoffs and no other game unless you made it to the national championship game in college can prep you for a game 7 type situation. He'll learn over time, but that's what separates a superstar from a legend.

Paul is young and if he's in that situation again I expect him to take over and dominate. Paul, imo, will soon prove that he's at LEAST the 3rd best player in the league, right behind Kobe and King James.

Its just something...Jordan-esque i dare say... about the way Paul has shown that he can dominate the game. I can't think of a higher compliment than that, especially for a dude of that size and playing the position that he does.

Dolla,

I agree with you on the Chris Paul statement. We need someone like him. Harris is good but not as good as Paul. We need a SG that can do that. I hope we do get back in the lottery and hope a SG does great things this year in college.

^^^ It's gonna be really interesting this year in college basketball since most of us project the Nets to be a high lottery pick.

What will make it more interesting is if CDR comes on strong and shows that he can handle our starting 2 spot after Vince leaves in a year or 3, how would we draft if we still are set on Lebron in 2010. We'd have our PG/SG/SF locked up if it all worked out (which I'm still holding my breath on) and an abundance of young bigs. I really have no clue what we'd do if that situation played out.

It's very early but I like the wing players who could potentially enter the 2009 draft... Demar DeRozan and Tyreke Evans are the two names that immediately pop into my mind...

Aussie,

We just spinned this thread into a much more interesting discussion.

Like i have said before, I am going to enjoy watching this young core. The bottom line I want them to learn to play together and show some signs, but the lottery should be our target. I want a young next star SG. That is the missing piece. Harris, ?, Lebron (I keep dreaming), Yi, Lopez. For CDR, i am not expecting him to become a starter. If he does, All those teams that passed up on him were idiots. I just want him to become a sixth man that on some teams maybe starting.

^^^^ With CDR, he's got the maturity and the poise to be our version of Josh Childress by next season or at the latest 2010 (when we'll need him to step up anyway). If that happens, I think getting him that late was an absolute STEAL

He's an glue guy . Somebody who can do a bit of everything but isn't outstanding in anything . He has neither superior athelecism , the best shot or is the greatest defender around but is solid at everything .

Many GM's rather take somebody who can do one thing really good . In my estimation the reason why he fell in the draft. But i think he is going to be a rotation player in the NBA .

I'll take the 25 wins and give me more ping pong balls, so I can have that crack at Blake Griffin

The Nets are in a no lose situation, since next year they will probably have a choice of Blake Griffin, Chase Budinger or James Harden. I would love any of these 3 players on my team. The main thing is to get the Nets ready for Brooklyn. :D :)

In the eye's of this long time Nets fan I'd have to say this is one of the best off seasons we've had. We have management that have a long term plan for us. Not just some GM who will settle for a middle of the road team. There being honest and coming out and saying we will develope the young guys and make cap room for the Future. Were sacrafising now and hoping it pays off down the road.
