Nets Roster - Mid-Season Analysis

Post#1 » by crazykidd2k6 » Wed Jan 28, 2009 4:55 pm

It's Snow day, so no School and I'm Incredibly bored so I felt like writing a new topic.

Line Up:
PG: Harris/Dooling
SG: Carter/Douglas-Roberts/Ager
SF: Simmons/Hayes/Hassell
PF: Yi/Najera/Anderson/Williams
C: Lopez/Boone/Swift

Devin Harris: Rising star Point Guard in the NBA. One of the quickest player in the league. Killer Instincts. Perimeter shooting is improving. Very smart zone and man defender. More than a descent passer. One of the best in the open court. Gets to the line ALOT. Weak. Injury prone?

Dooling: Combo guard. Good back up. Very athletic. Very active defender. Descent perimeter shooter. Tries to do too much at times. Makes bad decision at times.

Carter: Still one of the best scoring 2 guard. Good leader. Had became a smart scorer. Good ballhandler. Has a far shooting range. Knows how to get to the line. Descent Passer. Descent Rebounder. Not as athletic like back in the day. Not as fast as before. Lazy at times.

Douglas-Roberts: Rookie. Very good college player. So far did nothing in the NBA. Has been playing the rescently. Looks scared in games.

Ager: Very quick and fast. Very Athletic. Good potential. Does not know how to use his talents in the NBA level.

Simmons: Descent SF. Descent in everything. Was a pretty good player in the Clippers. Not anymore. Not good enough Starter.

Hayes: Good back up SG-SF. Pretty good shooter. Knows when to cut. Descent defender. Bad off screens shooter. Does not do enough in defense.

Hassell: Hard worker. Active defender. Descent midrange shooter. Nothing Else.

Yi: A player to watch for. Very good perimeter shooter especially for a PF. Very athletic and mobile especially for a 7 footer. Pretty quick. Very Good Inside touch. Descent ballhandler. Has all the tools to be a scoring machine. Needs to get stronger. Needs to learn more post moves. Needs to be more Assertive especially in the offense.

Najera: From what I believe the perfect 3rd string Player. An ALL out hustle player. Will force the opposing team turnovers. He is the player that will try to get you more possesions than the opposing team. Plays very smart. Not really great at anything.

Anderson: More than a descent perimeter shooter. Good offensive moves. Very bad defender. Good tool for a team.

Williams: Very athletic. Loves blocking shots. Showed some potential last year. Plays too aggressive at times. Makes dumb mistakes.

Lopez: A Center that you would ask for. Good Fundementals. Very Strong. Very Big. Good offensive rebounder. Knows when to block shots. underatted post defender. Can be something special. Post offense needs polishing.

Boone: Descent Back up. Very good hustle player. Strong. Pretty good finisher. Pretty good rebounder. Has no shooting range.

Swift: Extremely Athletic. Descent midrange shooter. Very good shot blocker. Pretty good finisher. Very inconsistent.

Team Need (In order to what we need the most to the least)
SF: That is a pretty good scorer. Who is a good defender
PF: Defensive PF that can stop players like Al Jefferson
PG: Need a third string PG
SG: Good prospect who can replace Carter
C: Better back up Center

Mid -Season Player Grades

Post#2 » by Vietbrah » Wed Jan 28, 2009 5:56 pm

Now that we're at the mid way point of the season, what grades would you give each player based on their play and give a description.

Devin Harris- A: Leads the team in scoring. I knew he would be good but i didnt think he'd be this good. At the start of the season i had low expectations for the season. Without the play of Harris this team would be much worse than they are right now. He has been struggling lately though

VC- B+: VC is VC. Frustrating to watch at times and amazing to watch at other times. He can take a game over or can completely take a game off. Sometimes seems uninterested on the court and shot selection is questionable but can still score and has become a solid leader.

Brook Lopez- A: Looks like a steal. Can become a dominant player. Has nice touch from outside, can score inside, blocks shots, rebounds. Does everything you can ask a big man to do and is only going to get better. Should be a top center in the league in a few years.

Yi- C+ : I know a lot of people on this board like him but i get annoyed watching him. Inconsistent. Will have a great game one night and play terrible the next game. Sometimes i think he should stop shooting and he'll continue to take jump shots. I think he needs to build some muscle and score inside more. Decent rebounder and has range on his shot. Still young (i think? who knows how old he really is) so should develop into a solid player.

Dooling- C+ : Decent backup guard but i feel like too many times he looks for his own shot instead of trying to make plays. Also bothers me a lot when he dribbles around aimlessly and then either forces a bad shot with the shot clock running down or passes to someone else with the shot clock running out so that they are forced into a bad shot.

Hayes- C+ : Not much to say about him. Pretty good shooter and can score. Solid role player.

Bobby Simmons- D : I cant stand this bum. I guess hes a decent defender and can shoot sometimes but I dont think he should be starting in the NBA

Ryan Anderson- C+ : Has struggles since having to start but before that was having a nice season. Big man that can knock down the 3. I didnt like the pick when it was made but I like Mr. Anderson and I think he will be a solid player in the future.

Boone- D: Make a damn free throw
Swift- hasnt played enough to grade
Najera- C- : has been ok in games he played in. Not much to say about him
CDR- Hasnt played enough to grade.. Should definately be getting more minutes though.
Hassell- C-: doesnt do much
Ager- Hasnt played enough to grade

SWill- F: I had high expectations for him. I loved watching him play last year but this year when he did play he fouled way too much and looked kinda lost out there. Would like to see him start to get some minutes again but with frank who knows.

That's a quality breakdown, ck2k6. There are a boatload of typographical errors, but I understand what you mean, and you know our team well. I view our squad in tiers of availability via trade:

Near-Untouchable
Harris
Lopez
Jianlian
Anderson
Roberts

Only at the Right Price
Carter
Boone
Simmons
Najera
Dooling
Hayes

Tradebait
Swift
Hassell
Williams
Ager

I am ready for our team to move some of the assets in the bottom two tiers, for youngsters that can further our rebuild while keeping us competitive, "winning on the fly", if you will.
Some people really have a way with words. Other people... not... have... way.

I basically agree word for word with your grades and explanations on the starters.

The bench we are close to the same opinion, but I think you came down to hard on Dooling because he has altered his game the last 15-20 games and has played much better and a lot less selfish. Plus is defense is excellent. I give him a B+.

Hayes I give a B+ as well. He is playing his role great, is a very nice scoring punch off the bench and plays average to good defense. His shot takes the occasional night off and he sometimes commits some silly fouls, bt he is a really great pickup and avery solid 6xth man.

I'll give Simmons a D+/C-.

I have to give Mr. Anderson a C- because of his putrid defense.

Agree with the rest.

^^ I'm a High School Senior in Nutley

As for ecuhus1981 I'm not really good at writing but, if I re-read I usually find most of my mistakes. Unfortunitly, I did not re-read this one. lol

As for the player value, I think it goes like this:

Tier1
Harris
Lopez
Yi

Tier2
VC

Tier3
Anderson

Tier4
CDR
Boone
SWAT

Tier5
Dooling
Hayes
Najera

Tier6
Simmons
Swift

Tier7
Hassell
Ager

The only player that is untouchable, I believe, is Harris. The rest are tradable. Brook and Yi are tradable depending on the star player.

Harris - B+
- Yeah he has shown us he can score, but he hasnt shown us he can be a floor leader as a PG.
VC - B
- I was going to give him a B+ then I remembered that I was according to most here the "VC Hater". I still have issues with his shot selection, lack of aggressiveness, and same old VC #hit. I factored in the his attitude towards the young guys.
Simmons - C+
-I would have given him a lower grade but all of it isnt his fault. This guy can shoot the 3, but he cant drive and is an average at best defender. I bet he regrets those RJ comments.
Yi - B
- I would have given him a lower grade but like Simmons it is not all his fault. I am impressed about this guy. He is going to be good. I like when he knows he is the main option. He become very aggressive.
Lopez - A
-He would have gotten a better grade but once again not his fault. He is what I have been waiting for in a Big Man. He has impressed me because I thought his brother was the better defender and rebounder.
Dooling - B+
- Man, I regret we didnt get him when Kidd was here. I really think he would have been a difference maker. I like his leadership especially with the second unit. NJNets, I totally disagree with you. Dooling has been better at looking for his teammates then Harris. Harris just puts his head down and goes to the basket. Yeah he takes shots but if he is open. The guys defense has bee good.
Boone - C
-I wasnt expecting much more then from last year. I gave him a low grade because of his FT and the BS report about him getting a jump shot.
Najera - C+
- He annoys me when he tries those 3s. I thought he was going to be our enforce and toughen up our bigs but i havent seen it.
Hayes - B
- Like dooling, Hayes came here a few years too late. I wanted the Nets to draft this guy.
Anderson - B-
- Like others most of it not his fault. Needs to work on D.
CDR-B-
- Like others most of it not his fault. Needs to work on D. He also needs to be aggressive.
Swift - C
- This is what he deserves. He has always been an average player.
SWill - D+
- F'n Head case. I didnt give him an F, because when he is with this team he seems happy.
Hassel - NG (No Grade)
- Cant grade him because like most its not his fault.

FRANK - F+
Everywhere I said it wasnt the players fault, it is because of Frank.
-On Simmons, The guy is a shooter stop involving him in Dribble drive plays. Let him roam behind the 3pt line. He has been doing this very well recently. No reason to post him up.
-On Yi, Clearly the guy becomes very aggressive when he is the Second or First option. Why wouldnt you put him in more of these situations.
-On Lopez, Why on earth doesnt he post this guy more. The PICK AND ROLLS are useless. In the Rap game, he posted up two plays back to back and was successful. Frank never comes back to it.
-On Anderson, he was ready to start. This was a stupid stubborn act by Frank. I would have been happier with Najera, Swift or even Boone.
-On CDR, he should be getting PT even if it is to relieve VC or Simmons.
-on Hassel, Frank says Hassel has a Defensive element but why doesnt Hassel come into the game when we are playing a team that has a Good SG/SF so he can DEFEND.
- Frank's Rotations Suck
-Frank's Offensive and Defensive Strategies SUCK
-Frank's Player Evalutions SUCK
-Frank's Pre and POST GAME INterviews are full of rambling and contradictions.

FRANK JUST PLAN SUCKS!!!!

Those grades are pretty spot on from what I've seen.

An upgrade at PF and more dynamic/explosive back up SG and this team is legit to compete IMO.

The Nets could actually get to the 4th spot w/ their backcourt if they could control the paint.

Yi, Ager, and Swift for Marcus Camby and a 1st round draft pick
