Revisiting the Nets 2010 Salary Cap Plan
The current season's salary cap is 58.68 million. In recent history the cap has increased by about 3 million per year. Normally, this would set the 2010-11 cap between 64 and 65 million. The maximum contract offer for a player that has been in the league 7 years(Lebron, Bosh, Wade, Amare and others) is 30% of the salary cap. So if the cap is 64 mil then the max is 19.2 mil and the Nets would need to have no more on the cap than 44.8.
There has been talk recently however that the salary cap is likely to stay at about the same level or perhaps even decrease. Should the cap level off at about 59 million come 2010-11, the max will be at 17.7 mil and the Nets would need to have no more on the cap than 41.3 mil.
With Carter, Harris, Dooling, Najera, Yi, Lopez, Swill, Anderson, Boone, CDR on the books the Nets would have 10 players accounting for about 50 million in 2010-11. Renouncing Boone is extremely likely and this would bring the Nets to 9 players for 44.5 mil.
The Nets also have 3 first rounders before the target free agency starts. Assuming they use each one in their rebuilding effort that should tack on another 6 or 7 million and 3 players. So without any unexpected changes to the roster the Nets will be at 50-51 million and 12 players.
The Nets need to shave off 10 million dollars to be sure they are players in the 2010-11 free agency. There are a few easy ways to do this such as not picking up Sean Williams option worth 2.5 mil that year, but the simple fact is that there needs to be a few trades (or one big one) made.
After running through these numbers a Carter trade looks much more likely and the Najera signing looks even worse. The sooner the Nets make a move to get the space, the less it will cost them.

Re: Revisiting the Nets 2010 Salary Cap Plan
Najera isn't guarenteed.
Sean Williams will be gone.
Boone is up for a contract that same off season.
I am not sure where you are getting the numbers from, but if we get rid of Sean, Boone, cut Najera,
don't resign Dooling and sign 3 1st round picks we should be around 42 mill.
Rod won't make any panic moves for the shot at only literally 5 guys worth a max deal, when he doesn't even know what the cap is yet and he won't for at least a year.

Re: Revisiting the Nets 2010 Salary Cap Plan
I got my numbers from shamsports.
I wasn't counting Boone's cap hold in the 10 mil I said we needed to lose.
Cutting Najera does not erase his entire salary that year, only saves us 1 million if memory serves (I'm sure that a large portion of his contract is guaranteed though).
I also said that not picking up Williams' option would be an easy way to cut that number down a bit.
Dooling's contract is worth 3.8 and I can't find out just how much of it is unguaranteed. Let's say that all of it can be dropped for no cost (I doubt it): cutting Dooling, Najera, and declining Williams' option would cut off 7.3 and we would still need to lose another 2.7 to be sure of having the money. Plus I'd rather try to keep Dooling.
It's something I'm bringing up now because the earlier you take care of these things the less it costs you down the line.

Re: Revisiting the Nets 2010 Salary Cap Plan
I could have sworn when we signed Dooling, both him and Najera had only $500K buyouts in 2010 if we needed to shed space. I remember the term "minuscule" tossed out in a few articles. But I don't have the articles, so I could be full of it, but that's what I thought.

That may be right for Dooling but I'm pretty sure its different for Najera.

I don't have the article either, but if I remember correctly the way Najera's contract is set up is, we have to make a decision on both years the summer of 2009 by a certain date. If we decide to waive him, we still pay him $545,000 a year for both years, which I would imagine also counts towards our cap.
I am not sure about Dooling.
I come up with 41,122,xxx by adding the following:
Devin
VC
Lopez
Anderson
545,000 buyout for Najera
1,000,000 buyout for Dooling(which I doubt is that much)
Yi
1.5 mill for one rookie(for our 09 pick 2nd year salary)
2.5 mill for a rookie(for the Dallas 10 pick)
1.4 mill for a rookie(for our 10 pick)
That's only 8 players.
I have not included Boone because who knows what we do with him, depending on the cap and if we are even in the market anymore, plus we can renounce his rights.
I have not included CDR, because I believe his option is an early termination, so if he has improved he's going to opt out, if it looks like he will be out of the league he will accept it. It is only for around 900,000 so, he is another one you wait and see on.
I still think 2011 is the more realistic option, fihguring the cap might be higher again, there will not be nearly as much competition, we will sdecline VC's option and only be left with 4 mill of his deal on the cap and Melo will be a UFA, who is from Baltimore and his wife is from NY.
East coast guy.
Yes we will have Yi's cap hold, but if we still have him, we will know by then what we have and see all our rookies growth, so we will either let him walk, S&T him or re-up him before we go after a FA.
I have a beef with 2010, and this is basically it, from a thread on the trade board:
There are 5 to 8 guys in 2010 worth max money, period, 2 of those will absolutely be matched because they are RFA.
Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Yao, Amare(maybe), Joe Johnson(maybe), Roy, Aldridge(maybe) and Boozer(If he does not opt out and can prove he can stay healthy).
After this you are looking at a group of players 30 years old and up that aren't worth max money if they were 24.
You have some guys that are current superstars that can be UFA's if they opt out such as Dirk and Kobe, but no matter how good these guys are they will be 32 when the 2010-11 season is underway and will not be worth their albatross contracts for at least the last 2 years of their deals if they did in fact go to a new team, or even stay with their current one.
After that you have all types of guys like Josh Howard if his team released him and guys like Al harrington, Mike Miller and Michael Redd if he opts out.
Whoo Hoo!
You will probably still have to overpay for these guys because of the mad rush to grab something.
You see why I am so excited.
The 2010 off season is gonna be one of the most aggravating and disappointing off seasons in A LONG TIME for fans of a lot of teams after their team doesn't get one of the big guys and wastes a lot of money for years by signing a much less desirable player as a PR move.
Now I don't think Rod is the type to make a PR move, so IMHO, I think he will attempt to make a run at one of the top dogs that he thinks he has the most realistic chance at and is the best fit, but if he doesn't get one of those guys, which he won't he will have even more room and incentive in 2011.
This is all if we are still even players and haven't made a huge trade.

Re: Revisiting the Nets 2010 Salary Cap Plan
I have completely jumped off the 2010 bandwagon.
1- Brooklyn might or NEVER happen
2- Cleveland is doing better then ever
3- NY is more appealing right now if #1 doesnt happen
I still want to be under the cap, but I think the Portland and OKC model is what I want. Get young players!!!
Before someone brings up Newark, I think Spike's show DEA will be in Newark this season. The commercial says "One of the worse cities in the US"
Though I am looking to move to NJ, Newark isnt a place I will visit often. That may change in future but I have been there so far.

Re: Revisiting the Nets 2010 Salary Cap Plan
Honestly, there are some cool parts of Newark actually, but yeah the bad parts are BAD. I gotta admit though that the city is working it's ass off to change that. In a decade, it's still gonna be a little tough (which is the case in areas of all cities), but at least you won't feel like you're gonna die walking from the ROCK to the NJ Transit station.
Regardless, no use debating about Newark or Brooklyn until March. Thorn said the 2 remaining court issues should be wrapped up by then and we'll see if they actually give us a definite ground breaking date.

Re: Revisiting the Nets 2010 Salary Cap Plan
1) We don't need to sign our '10 picks before we sign a FA that summer. We would simply own their rights, and their contracts wouldn't show up on our books.
2) Boone's cap hold will be a bugaboo, unless we trade him, waive our RFA rights to him or trade him. Did I mention we could trade him??? Seriously, a 3rd option would be to sign him to a minimal deal on July 1st, 2010. The deal should start lower than his cap hold, I imagine, and he wouldn't be a bad vet to keep around.
3) Bottom line, YES, we do need ot move Carter if we want to be 2010 players. Whether or not we plan to move to NY, I think a Carter trade should be #1 on our FO's priority list right now.

Re: Revisiting the Nets 2010 Salary Cap Plan
Man, the Bricks used to have the best herb.
At least as good as uptown if you knew the spots.
Those were the days.
I don't want to be a max contract player in 2010.
If we do not trade Carter and resign Boone and keep Dooling we are still players in 2010, just not max contract players.
No one is coming to play in NJ of the top big dog FA's.
Sorry.
Get over it.
Go with the PDX or OKC model and if anything gear up for 2011.
Once again, 2010 is gonna be a horrible year for FA for max contract guys.
After the big 3, THERE IS NO ONE WORTH MAX MONEY.
Roy, yes, but come on, PDX matches, he'll possibly be locked up a year early along with LMA.
Amare isn't a guy I want, but the chance of him coming here anyway?
Not high.
Joe Johnson I love, but why would he leave Atlanta for less money when they have a really nice core around him and are just getting better?
Boozer, WAY TOO INJURY PRONE and may opt out this year.
Who else is left?
NO ONE WORTH MAX.

Can everyone answer this question for me? Who honestly thinks we're going to keep our 2009 and both 2010 draft picks? I honestly think 1 of those picks will result in a player who will wear a Nets uniform. That's just my thinking.

I think we will keep noth of them.
It's the only way to fill out a roster with quality players that can get better on extremely cheap contracts.

Just click on where it says additional contract notes for info. on player's buyouts, non-guaranteed portions of their contract, etc.

^Never noticed that link before.
We would only save 500,000 on the cap by cutting him.
Eduardo Najera: Signed a frontloaded 4 year $12 million contract in July 2008. Last two years are both all but $500,000 guaranteed, and become fully guaranteed if Najera is not waived on or before June 30th 2010.

I didn't even notice that. I thought it was pay him 500 grand a year for each year.
Wow, what an absolutlely (Please Use More Appropriate Word) signing.
Even if he plans on moving VC, why sign this over the hill scrub to that kind of long term deal that comprimises the cap at all?
Move this horrible contract for the 1st available expiring please!

I can even go further to certain Parts of Eastern Parkway. The whole area has been changing for over 10 years now. So the arena would just be an add on to the area. Correct me if I am wrong, In Newark the Arena is or was the starting point of the area changing. There is the difference.

I love Brooklyn. My parents were born and raised in Bensonhurt. Still got family around that area. I completely agree that there are some awesome parts of Brooklyn. To my knowledge with the Rock, it was supposed to be the center of the rejuvenation of the area.
