did thorn miss out, their contracts run until, 2010, we could of solved our backup issues and got a young sf, i would have never minded this deal, smh...

When you don't have revenue, you kind of can't add anymore to the payroll. I stated in one of the MIL threads that as a fan, I would've done this even if it further logjams the 3 spot, but as a GM, I could definitely understand why Thorn didn't do it.

And this just points out that it was a bad trade for MIL when they traded Mo Williams away in that three team deal that got them Ridnour, Damon Jones, and Adrian Griffin.

i guess but do u think the najera contract prevented this? Swift and Ridnour's contract are leveled this year with Alexander's 2 mil, so its not a big deal, and rather than signing free agents we stay put...

When you first look at this it does look interesting.

But there are a few issues that come up

Money - Like Rich said, Thorn wanted to get rid of VC.
Playing Time - Frank was going to bench someone. Most likely Alexander. That would not be cool. Someone would have gotten the shaft.
Roster - Might have been another issue like it was this year.

All and All I would have done this trade. They would have been at least been assets for people cutting salary for 2010.

Well seeing as Najera hasn't done much for us on the court except almost costing us games and not playing at all, it's hard to say if Nets Front Office would've really spent more on this team as is because like I said...with Najera's injury, he hasn't played. Now that's this year's case.

The contract that he signed however, which was 4 years, might have influenced Thorn's decision to turn the deal down. Knowing that he'd have to pay Najera's along with JA's and Ridnour's contracts next year would've been a bit costly. Then add the salary of the 1st rounder we pick this year.

So...it's possible that could've been the case. We also spent money in the offseason on Dooling and Hayes (Although I definitely won't argue those signings) and we didn't immediately clear cap space when we traded RJ for Yi and Simmons. Just a number of factors including SIC's above.

Like the article said, in theory, no brainer for the Nets to say yes. Fans forget financial reasons. Yeah we wouldn't be pushing the lux tax or anything, but we lose money as it is now. If we sign a damn 3rd pg soon, I'll forget all about this because I would have loved to have Joe on our team.

Likewise. I was one of the few that wasn't high on Lopez on draft night and was pissed when MIL took him before us. Well...I'm not complaining. I even created the Brook Lopez Shrine.

I like Ridnour, but he would take minutes from Dooling and CDR.
Alexander is young and can jump out the gym, but he hasn't even been able to crack the rotation on a severely injury plagued Bucks team.

Oh well.

There were other deals just like this, for the taking at the trade deadline. We really could've used a boost at the PG and SF positions, and even though Joe hasn't done well so far in Milwaukee, he could've been a great fit in the DDM.

This would have been a really affordable way to stay competitive by shoring up glaring weaknesses, while keeping the 2010 plan intact. Instead, we chose to save money. THIS is why I want us to tank! It's not as though this trade would have sent us over the luxury tax next year. If we're not going to fund a competitive team, they why even try to play your way out of a top-5 spot? Pick a strategy, and go full-bore. Don't build around the youngsters BUT try to win BUT try to save money.
