what would make the nets a contender?

with the emergence of lopez and a revitalized carter...i was just wondering what the nets could do this summer to make them a contender? i mean the core of the nets is practically the spurs: an all-star point guard, a solid shooting guard, and a low post presence. so what moves could the nets make to contend? maybe simmons' contract could be an asset this summer?

Scenario 1: A new head coach, an above average SF in free agency and 2 more years for Brook and Yi and the rest of the youngins to develop, giving us a deep young bench that will only get better.

Scenario 2: A new head coach and we could just mortgage our future, trade for an All-Star PF or SF for Yi/expirings/picks, sign a solid vet for whichever spot wasn't filled in the trade and just try to power our way that way, adding some vets who want a ring and willing to play for the minimum along the way. See: 2007-2008 Celtics.

I'd rather do #1

for scenario #2 theres one big thing your forgetting. the nets dont have kevin garnett and ray allen, the 07-08 celtics do. i like a mixture of both though. new head coach, trade for an above average SF using yi/expiring/ picks, sign a solid vet for whatever spot wasnt filled in the trade.

Getting rid of Frank is the first step, and getting rid of Vince would be next. There's no problem with Carter on this team, but there will be teams having serious interest in him next year, just like they did this year, and the Nets should take it for young players or expirings.

If trading Vince isn't an issue, I would go with PF. I like the idea of having a PF stretch the D with Lopez down low, but Ryan Anderson isn't the guy. I think Yi could do the job, but the Nets would probably have to include him to get such a player in return.

I'd rather see CDR develop as the 3, and get a different 4. Sean Williams has talent, but I don't know if he has the determination to be the starter for the future.

1 New coach, one with a lot of talent.
2 Dirk for Yi/Simmons/Hassel/2010 Mavs pick
3 Solid lotto pick this year, wing player preferable.
4 All the young guys to further their development and the whole team to further gel.
5 Sign maybe one solid vet on the bench for depth. Doesn't have to be a stud, but not another Najera.
6 Few if any injuries.

eff all that new coach BS all we need to be a contender is a All Star PF or SF and a 3rd PG and where set.

You're wrong.
Either of these additions will not be successful with Opie in charge.

Add an allstar level SF and we are back to the RJ days of an even more stagnant ISO offense.

Add an allstar level PF and Opie will forget Brook Lopez is even on the roster and during the process he will never utilize the new guy right and will never run an upbeat enough offense to keep his star guards happy.

You'll be looking at a team on paper that guys on ESPN and TNT will say can challenge Boston and Cleveland and have taken the 3rd spot from Orlando, but will struggle to get the 4th seed, struggle to get out of the 1st round and get upset in the 2nd round, in 6 games, with homecourt.

I don't know if you think Opie is a really good coach or you severely undervalue and under estimate how important good coaching is, but it is one of the 2.

If you really want to know, we gotta look in depth to our team and see our strength and weaknesses. Best way to start this is look at our whole entire roster.

PG: Harris/Dooling
SG: Carter/Ager/Douglas-Roberts
SF: Simmons/Hayes/Hassell
PF: Yi/Williams/Anderson/Najera
C: Lopez/Boone

A Championship Contender are all an all around team with some kind of specialty like paint defending, rebounding, forcing turnovers, etc. Also Contenders all have atleast one player that is a superstar

Looking at the Nets, we are far off becoming a contending team. The Nets are still too young, doesn't have a complete starting line up, doesn't have good enough role players, and does not have a good enough star players. I don't really see either Lopez or Harris being a supterstar type of player. If we keep the harris, yi lopez combo in their full potential, I only see this team at best a 3 rounds exit team or high tier team like orlando or houston. The nets need to get a better main superstar.

If we keep the Harris,Yi, Lopez combo for the future we will still need a very good defensive swingman (3-4), Find a strong rebounder, get a third pointguard, a 3 point specialist, a shooting guard that will replace VC that do all the intangibles, And an instant offense sixth man.

im not saying frank is a good coach but i know when to blame the team instead of calling out frank every day. If we had any other coach who doenst have a job right now we would still be in the same spot maybe worse. Blaming Frank for last nights loss would be the stupidest most (Please Use More Appropriate Word) thing ever

If you read through the game thread, although I do feel Frank had his part in it, I went off on the players and especially VC for last night's loss.
But on the season, if we had a real coach in here, we would have a record similar to the Sixers right now.

I'm thinking the key to NJ's future success is just time. You guys have two young stars in Harris and Lopez, though you could use some role players. Being that role players are much easier to acquire than stars, I'm thinking if the Nets can stick with those two and surround them with some nice teammates via cap space and the draft, you're set. Unfortunately, Carter may not fit in these plans but if Thorn can net a decent return for Vinsanity, it may provide a decent option for future cap space and young talent. Once Lopez further adjusts to the NBA (though he's already looking great mind you), NJ will have a nice inside-out duo and with some other guys that can take advantage of opportunities created by Brook and Harris, you'll be set.

A swingman that can replace Vince / create his own offense (while being decent at setting up others), is probably the Nets biggest need right now. I'd then try to complement that scoring wing player with a defensive minded player at the SG or SF spot.
