Nets Pre-Draft Summit
I apologize for the fact that the Nets are no longer playing, but there is one bright side to the "unofficial" start of the offseason. It's time for the annual Pre-Draft Summit, led by myself (Andrew Perna). The pieces will be turned into articles, and will be part of a three-pronged attack of draft coverage on RealGM.
Thanks in advance for the answers, and please remember to try keeping the answers as tight and concise as possible.
1. What could the team have done different to make the playoffs?
2. Where were the team’s biggest strengths?
3. Who had a surprisingly effective season?
4. Who had a surprisingly ineffective season?
5. How confident are you in the front office heading into the offseason?
6. What are the team’s biggest needs in the draft?
7. Who would you like your team to select with the 11th pick?
Thanks for taking the time, and contributing answers. We appreciate that you all help make RealGM what it is today!

Here is last year's Nets Lottery Summit
http://nets.realgm.com/articles/64/2008 ... rsey_nets/
I invite all Nets posters to participate. I'd make it mandatory, but I'm told by the guys in charge I'm not allowed to.

1 - Could have benched Yi 3 weeks before they actually did.
2 - Backcourt rotation of VC, Harris and Dooling, and towards the end of the year, CDR.
3 - Lopez is gonna be much better than expected and Hayes played much better than expected, especially defensively - we knew he could shoot.
4 - Yi - not sure he is an NBA player. Boone comes in 2nd.
5 - Not much, but thats because of Ratner - He could care less aboout Ws. Without so many $ restrictions, I would have lots more confidence in FO, but money talks. Also, 2010 is a facade.
6 - A rebounding PF - Yi just isnt going to cut it, I like Anderson alot, but more as a bench/rotation player
7 - Blake Griffin, but realistically - James Johnson, Earl Clark, DeJuan Blair - in that order.

1- Change the rotation earlier. CDR should have been getting time ahead ahead simmons,Yi should not have been playing at all and we should have tried to pick up a 3rd string PG sometime along the way.
2- We were effective shooting the ball from beyong the arc, to everyone's surprise.
3 - Brook. Half of the board(inlcuding myself) were against picking him at #10 and certaintly had low expectations. He was excellent.. Jarvis Hayes and Devin Harris also come to mind.
4 - Sean Williams... He went from potentially being top 5 in blocks to becoming 6 extra fouls off the bench. He got worse in every aspect of the game.
5 - Not really sure, I don't know if we intend to sign any FA's this year or make any trades.
6 - A Shooter or slasher at the 3.
7 - I'd like Demar Derozan to fall to us, if it's possible.. Haven't really followed this years Draft Class to be honest.

Re: Nets Pre-Draft Summit
1. Not much, just didn't have the team this year to compete in my opinion. They could've not done that RJ for Yi deal though because Yi is pretty awful. Also, I don't know how much of a difference it would have made in the win column but CDR should have played more throughout the season.
2. The backcourt and Brook Lopez
3. Brook Lopez.. exceeded my expectations. I also didn't really like the Ryan Anderson pick that much at the time but he's alright.
4. Yi.. terrible
5. I still think they're trying to build towards the move to Brooklyn so I don't think the Nets are going to make a big splash this off season or turn any heads next season. We're probably going to miss the playoffs again next year.
6. I want a power forward to play next to Brook or small forward
7. if either or still there then Harden or Derozan.. realistically, James Johnson or Earl Clark.

Re: Nets Pre-Draft Summit
1. More consistent on the defensive end, not relying on Yi and Simmons for so long, burying CDR on the bench.
2. One of the strongest starting backcourts in the league and Brook Lopez.
3. Lopez and Jarvis Hayes.
4. The trio of Boone, Sean Williams and Yi. Najera was a total non-factor as well.
5. I still think the goal is rebuilding. I trust Thorn and Kiki, but I do fear Ratner interfering with things (either by slashing and burning expenses or by order Vince to stay b/c of perceived gate attraction)
6. Both wing positions, especially since it seems unlikely that Vince will be in NJ for long. They could also use a power forward.
7. I figure DeRozan, Harden and Tyreke Evans will all be gone at #11. I haven't decided which one I want the most yet, but my top 4 (in no particular order) are Earl Clark, Jrue Holliday, James Johnson and Terrence Williams.

Re: Nets Pre-Draft Summit
1. They could've at least try to play big instead of playing small all the time. I think the front court of Brook and Boone or SWill would've made the team better down the stretch. Also, Frank and his staff could've made a better effort in motivating the players, i feel like there's just no life in that bench, all we see is just the claps and screams but that don't mean nothing if the players don't respond to anything.
2. There's a lot of offense but those strengths were not efficiently utilized due to coaching. The team has better shooters now and obviously, we now have a young talented PG who can score and an upcoming star in Brook and of course, we still have VC.
3. Jarvis Hayes... i didn't think he was gonna be this good. He was like the 2nd unit's VC.
4. a) Yi was terrible. I thought he could've played like Rashard Lewis. He was given plenty of chances.
b) Najera... I know he got injured but even prior to the injury, he was already slacking. Not the
Najera i used to know, the aggressive one that would always get the ball no matter where it landed.
c) SWill just disappointed me. His game needed more work but it was good enough for me, i was
willing to wait until he becomes a more efficient player but all went down the drain after his issues
outside the court.
5. Not at all. I want Thorn gone, i had enough of him too, just like Frank. I think it's time for a new mastermind and until i can confirm that it was all Ratner's idea and his businessman's approach and not a fan of the game, i will stay put to what i feel about the FO.
6. The team needs a bruiser PF and a shooting SF. I personally would like to get Kleiza and Ben Wallace. I dont know their contract situation but they're my choices, with the money they have (Damn you Bruce).
7. Curry, Johnson or Blair... in that order. Blair would've been my 1st choice w/o the 2 knee surgeries, i'm not worried about his height.

Re: Nets Pre-Draft Summit
1. What could the team have done different to make the playoffs?
Fired Lawrence Frank?
Should have traded for someone like Salmons and Brad Miller, especially considering the terrible return Sacto got back for them.
2. Where were the team’s biggest strengths?
Outside shooting and interior defense. Carter's playmaking and leadership. Harris' emergence.
3. Who had a surprisingly effective season?
Devin Harris and Brook Lopez. Harris became an Allstar and is now spoken upon as one of the top point guards in the league and Lopez looked fantastic for a rookie, probably would have went 2nd overall if the draft was redone with the ability of hinsight. Steal of the draft.
4. Who had a surprisingly ineffective season?
Yi Jianlian. I don't think most thought he was going to have a true breakout season or become a stud, but most thougt he would have been a lot better then he was and had more self confidence. A little consistency would have been nice as well.
5. How confident are you in the front office heading into the offseason?
So so. I don't know what ownerships financial commitment is to this team and how much they even care about basketball and team success, therefore it makes trades for big contracts or even small free agent signing's seem iffy at best. Thorn and Kiki haven't been very good at drafting unless they have high picks or a no brainer falls to them as well.
6. What are the team’s biggest needs in the draft?
A legit power forward and a nice wing, with the ability to defend, hit the open 3 and create his own shot as well as for others.
I also really want them to pick up a 2nd rounder, draft Nando De Colo and stashing him in Europe for a season or two.
7. Who would you like your team to select with the 11th pick?
. I am really hoping they try to trade up for Harden or Jordan Hill. If we stay put I am hoping for James Johnson, Terrence Williams or Earl Clark in that order.

Re: Nets Pre-Draft Summit
1) I don't think we could have or should have made the playoff last season. I thought we were a 25 to 30 win team going into last season.
2) Two very good piece's in Devin and Brook. Also veteren guidance from Vince.
3) Devin and Brook really exceeded my expections. I will also say Hayes and Anderson to a lesser degree.
4) Yi, Swat, Josh all major disapointments
5) I really have little confidance in Kiki he drafted one of the biggest busts of all time when he was with Denver although I did not follow every move he made over there so it's just an opinion. I think other GM might be a little gun shy when it comes to dealing with Rod Thorn and that maybe making him less effective.
6) The best player available. There move valuable our piece's the more we can get for them.
7) I think were going t end up with Clark and I'm OK with that.
